Who else has been and hates the city with the same passion that I do?

It's a shithole.

Melbourne on the other hand is exemplary.

Melbourne has culture. Sydney's culture is defined by its backpacking tourists.

It's just a haven for backpackers. Nothing more.

Sure there are alot of backpackers here (ALOT, especially where i live!) but sydney has its own culture also, especially in the Newtown and Paddington/Taylor Square areas, not to mention the ethnic groups that have formed their own little communities in various parts of the city. Where i live is unfortunately dominated by backpackers, and has slightly ruined the area, which is why the cops are more than willing to crack down on them, illegal workers/overstayers and kick them out on the country. Fabbo.:disco:

I stayed in Newtown for a bit.

Every other restaurant is a thai one. Lesbian central.

I've been on holidays to both Sydney & Melbourne and I prefer Melbourne.

Without the Opera House and the Bridge, Sydney is just another city without anything major to recommend it. Yes the weather is nice and the beach is nice but so what. Melbourne is far prettier and more pleasant to live in. There seems to be a a bit of culture in Melbourne also. PLus Melbourne has the Great Ocean Road beside it!

Sydney is a much LARGER more EXSPANSIVE city than Melbourne. If you want culture you have to LOOK for it. It has plenty to offer, its just a pity that besides the Aboriginies, Australian culture is pathetically dismal. The older parts of the city like Wollomolloo (spelling) and Port Botany are grand.

Precisely.

Bondi is a damp squib.

Manly, Coogee and even Bronti are better but barely get any press.

It's non-existent!

Pity then that the Aboriginal culture has been pushed into the background...

Theyre not as popular because theyre such a pain in the arse to get to, unless you are willing to walk or drive. The surf isnt as good as Bondi's either, and Bondi get's more sunlight throughout the day. Bondi is great , i live there opposite the beach front, its just a shame all those fucking backpackers from the Uk, Europe and South America had to come here and claim it as their own. It was better 5 or 10 years ago when it had its own individual style, and not full of pretentious wankers. :grr:

Yeah, instead we're left with the vomit inducing "culture' of the west. All people see of Aboriginal culture is people jumping up and down smeared with white paint and wearing red nappies, when this is not the case at all.

The irony!!!

The large part of the east coast of Australia is SO Americanised it's uncanny (and that includes Sydney)! There was very little celebration of Aboriginal culture from what I could see.

Melbourne in my opinion has the better museums, the better galleries, the better nightlife, a more cosmopolitan mix and infinitely more discerning inhabitants.

Places of interest to visit in Melbourne ; a STADIUM, a few SCRAGGY streets and trams. They are actually very much the same, except melbourne is devoid of any beach culture...for obvious reasons. And Melbourned having a better nightlife ? I dont think so, again, you just have to know where to look. A good friend of mine who lived in Melb for 3 years told me that the only difference between the cities are the horrid traffic jams that occur here. I dont know, there will always be a rivalry between the two!

Apparently its going to be 40+ here tomorrow (well, TODAY now), DIRE.

I don't know how anyone can dislike Sydney. It has the best of both worlds. A buzzing city with a real relaxing attitude. I LOVED IT.

I guess I ended up staying there for too long - almost got stuck there.

It didn't help that those around me were just as despondent and cynical about the place.
