Although I'm ashamed to say I haven't followed the news at all. What child hostages?

Still, children killed is always :moopy:

there were up to 1200 held hostage apparently, so the number could rise significantly.

double edged sword for this election though, I want Kerry to win, but if he does its at least 8 years till she can get the job. Bush gets in, she could take over in 4

It's become obvious as the day has worn on that there are many casualties. Very sad indeed, yet, did anyone honestly expect this to end any other way?

Fucking hell...on the BBC news about six hours ago it said they'd taken nearly all the hostages out and they had sent armed officers or whatever in there...it was mostly the hostage takers standing their ground. Suppose that was rough guesswork at the time then...

I'm just watchimg it now, the information seems to be changing every ten minutes. 700 in hospital at the moment, about half of them are children.

And by the reaction Bush's speech got last night, it looks like Hilary will be having her chance in 4 years!

Kerry should really just shut up about the past wars though, late last night he hosted a kneejerk reaction rally in which he went on and on about Vietnam and it all sounded so desperate

Neither are ideal I know, but if Bush gets in its a vindication of whats happened over the last four years. I blame Schwarzenegger, TWAT! did you see his speech?

At least 150 people are reported to have died at a school in southern Russia where Chechen separatists had been holding hundreds of hostages.
Dozens of corpses were seen outside a local morgue, and the number of dead is expected to rise further.

Heavy gunfire and loud explosions were heard throughout the morning as Russian troops stormed the school, in the town of Beslan in North Ossetia.

Russian troops are fighting to free children still held hostage.

The BBC's Jonathan Charles in Beslan reports hearing more loud blasts in the area of the school after a period of relative calm.

There is confusion over what sparked the operation, which was unplanned.

Correspondents say the day's events have taken Moscow by surprise.

Kerry's own policies are barely relevant. The massive anti-Bush movement is really his only shot. I would like him to get it though, ANYTHING is better than Bush.

oh God yes, I heard Schwazebugger's speech on the radio, went down very well I hear.

The fact that a brainless muscle mary and a rednecked yokel are the two most powerful men in America is quite funny in a :zombie: way

Homer Simpson was right though - "Only in America could a guy like me be employed" :D

He had the easiest election in the world if you think about, all her had to do was ride the anti-Bush wave and it'd be plain sailing. Instead he concentrates on his participation in past wars, which may or may not be as heroic as he claims!

I know this might sound stupid, but I sometimes think the rest of the world should get to vote in this election. Like it or lump it, AMerica is the strongest and most powerful nation on this Earth and who they choose as a leader will affect the rest of us greatly...we should get a say whether we want Bush to fight this 'war', which in reality is just him geting rid of the countries he's never heard of

A tad unfair perhaps. The theatre siege was a grave error of judgement on behalf of the security forces, yes, but this was altogether different. Events of this nature are difficult even for the most expertly trained forces. Today's response was not planned, but was a reaction to the particular circumstances they were being faced with. When the first batch of kids jumped out the window and ran for safety, what began as an attempt to shield them from gunfire escalated into a full on offensive. A gap emerged in the militants' organisation which had to be exploited. You cant plan for these things. There is no textbook way of dealing with it. I think they did what they could and did it rather well. Its was always going to end in tragedy. No matter what action was taken.

My only criticism would be that the Russian forces should not have allowed civilians to adopt front line positions. The choas which ensued did little to help anyone in taking out the militiants effectively.

Keyes: Cheney's Gay Daughter Is a Sinner
NEW YORK - Illinois Republican Senate candidate Alan Keyes (news - web sites) labeled homosexuality "selfish hedonism" and said Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites)'s lesbian daughter is a sinner.

The former talk show host who has made two unsuccessful runs for the White House made the comments Monday night in an interview with Sirius OutQ, a satellite radio station that provides programming aimed at gays and lesbians.

After saying homosexuality is "selfish hedonism," Keyes was asked if that made Mary Cheney "a selfish hedonist."

"Of course she is," Keyes replied. "That goes by definition."

Liz Cheney, Mary's sister, refused to comment Wednesday during an interview on CNN.

"I guess I'm surprised, frankly, that you would even repeat the quote, and I'm not going to dignify it with a comment," she told the interviewer.

The Log Cabin Republicans (news - web sites), a gay and lesbian organization, denounced Keyes' remark.

"In a political career defined by failures, this is a new low for Alan Keyes," executive director Patrick Guerriero said in a statement Wednesday. "Attacking politician's children is beyond the pale, even for an extremist like Alan Keyes."

In the days before the Republican National Convention, Dick Cheney spoke at some length about the fact that Mary is a lesbian and his view of gay relationships. His tacit support for states' rights on the issue of same-sex marriage and less-than-ringing endorsement of President Bush (news - web sites)'s push for a constitutional amendment to ban gay unions drew criticism from several conservative groups.
