Spot the mistake ... the Hooj selection for those with a wandering ear
Singles
1) Echomen - Spirit Forensic
Back after an unintentional hiatus, Newcastle-based label Forensic enlist the help of Echomen to provide their next single. And it's a fine return to form too, no question. Matthew
2) Dekay Band - Higher Thoughts Little Mountain
A label and an artist that can do wrong it seems, Matthew Dekay does what he does best on Sander K's Little Mountain Records. Check the Steve Porter mix on the B for an alternative rub. Soul
3) Mekanik - Get Your Head Stuck To Your Neck/ C'est Robotique RIP
No nonsense, trippy, robotic house music from Soul Mekanik is what you get here. Solid drums, a deep kick and all the jerky funk you could want.
4) Critical7 - Lost Lost Language
Lost Language gets back on the case in fine style with Critical7's 'Lost'. Maurice, Descent, Pesh and Recluse all turn in solid mixes in different, equally excellent styles. Downloads and promo CDRs are also available.
5) Aquaculture - All Nite Airgap
Dancefloor aimed techy house styles from Aquaculture. Dub version included on the B side for those not so hot on the vocal.
6) Santos - Sabot (includes Drumattic Twins Remix) Mantra Vibes
The Mob release of Santos' 'Sabot' was a top package to start with and now Drumattic Twins give their version an airing via Mantra Vibes. Also holds Santos' original mix not on the Mob release. Hot.
7) The MFA - The Difference It Makes Border Community
Still moving us in every way. The beautiful original is backed up by an acidic Petter remix and The MFA's own drum 'n' bass interpretation. Class all the way.
8) Clouddead - Dead Dogs Two (inc. Boards Of Canada Mix) Big Dada
Big Dada provides a platform for a collaboration from two of the more experimental artists to show their wares. Boards of Canada's Sgt. Pepper's era Beatles-esque remix of 'Dead Dogs Two' is a profound, unnerving and lush experience.
9) Dave Clarke - What Was Her Name? (LFO and Blackstrobe Remixes) Skint
Dave Clarke's team-up with Chicks On Speed gets the remix treatment from LFO and Blackstrobe. LFO's genius spastic techno lunacy lends a tight balance to Blackstrobe's crackling, electro house version.
10) Brothomstates - Rktic/Matala Bobo Arcola
Challenging leftfield techno on the A side and deep, deep tech house action on the B. Rumbling bass, haunting synths and ghostly vocals make this a very serious piece of music.
11) Random Factor - Convergence / Back To Me 20:20 Vision
20:20 Vision's 99th release sees the multi-talented Random Factor laying down the goods ahead of his album. John Tejada's interpretations on the B side make this one not to sleep on.
12) Rouzbeh Delavari - Inner Structure Deep
Challenging leftfield techno on the A side and deep, deep tech house action on the B. Rumbling bass, haunting synths and ghostly vocals make this a very serious piece of music.
13) Claro Intelecto - Peace Of Mind AI Recordings
More top drawer deep sounds on AI Recordings. Claro Intelecto's 'Peace Of Mind' EP touches on all the bases from Larry Heard, electro and stirring subaquatic sounds. Impressive.
14) Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out Domino
Morgan Geist weaves his magic on Franz Ferdinand's 'Take Me Out'. Two versions are available, 7" and 12", with the 7" holding the excellent B side cut 'Truck Stop' and the 12" Mr. Geist's mix.
15) Gypsy - Funk De Fino / Mukkaa - Neebro (Flash Bros Mix) Limbo
Limbo return with Gordon Kay and Flash Brothers providing the remixes on their latest relase.
Albums
1) Ulrich Schnauss - A Strangely Isolated Place / Far Away Trains Passing By City Centre Offices
Two full length artist albums of often transcendent beauty, steeped in brooding, pastoral atmospherics and underpinned by loose, shuffling electronic funk. Boards of Canada, Slowdive, Brian Eno, Can and Oliver Lieb at his 'Collected Works' best all come to mind as Schnauss weaves his languid, gently psychedelic spell.
2) Air - Talkie Walkie Virgin
After failing to conform to public expectancies with their last artist album, the brooding Pink Floyd emulating '10,000hz Legend', Air are welcomed back into the fold and on to coffee tables with 'Talkie Walkie'. Delicate and sophisticated music from the Versailles duo.
3) Dani Siciliano Likes... !K7
Dani Siciliano steps into the limelight for her debut album 'Likes...' on !K7. Warm, sensual vocals are married to glitchy grooves and experimental jazz backing from this one time (some time) Herbert collaborator. Definitely one of our album Likes.
4) Dimitri from Paris - In The House Defected
The charming French DJ steps up to the plate to provide Defected with the latest installment of their 'In The House' series. Four sides of vinyl comprise the DJ friendly packs for the comp with nearly every track a bona fide gem.
5) Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters Polydor
Best known for 'Comfortably Numb', their rabble rousing, Bee Gees-soundalike cover version of Pink Floyd's classic track, Scissor Sisters' album is quite the revelation and one that proves they've more than one string to their shiny bow. Punk funk, camp disco and arch musings on life, friends and freaks are all included.
