Now I'm no Mandy loon at ALL, but I must say I've been listening to this lately and it is truly wonderful. Don't own anything else by her, but I picked this up on the cheap after loving "In My Pocket" (why the hell did this flop?!), and it really is classy pop :D
Somewhat of an acoustic feel mixed with pop. Makes many tracks similar (not to the extent of "State Of Mind" or anything, but like that album, it works well. Sounds like a proper album collection, not just random songs put on one disc), but the middle-eastern feel on a couple is a great addition.
"Saturate Me" is ART :D
Anyway, *appreciates*
It's wonderful.
"Coverage" is her best work though

I always thought Cry was rather good. Though admittedly, its the only one I heard.
She will never match "Candy" though, that's the only thing I've heard from her (I've heard Cry aswell but that's bland)

Ooo, an album full of covers isn't it? I must look into it :D

*bump*
I'm sure the album has been discussed elsewhere since, but I've been listening to it this week and much as 'Coverage' is a bit more fluent, I'm rapidly coming around to this as my favourite pre-singer-songwriter Mandy Moore album.
Rate:
10 In My Pocket
06 You Remind Me
08 Saturate Me
06 One Sided Love
07 17
10 Cry
10 Crush
09 It Only Took A Minute
08 Turn The Clock Around
07 Yo-Yo
05 From Loving You
04 Split Check
02 When I Talked To You
09 I Wanna Be With You (Acoustic)
In fact, the few dreary tracks at the end aside and lacking a BIG single, I'd pick it over Britney and Jessica Simpson's second albums. Poor underrated Blandy :(
VoR, don't let me down, I know you listen to this regularly.

I bought this off CD-Wow back in the day because there was no UK release (am I right in thinking?).
It's a nice album with some gems, particularly like "17" and "Crush". "In My Pocket" reminds me of Brit's "Slave 4 U" in the sense that it tries to be unusual and thinks it's better than it is.

I think she was TOTALLY abandoned in the UK after the first album.
PRECIOUS MEMORIES
I truly love this album. I can see why it never became a Moopy classic, it's more Emma Bunton than Rachel Stevens. But it's SO lovely and her voice is just beautiful.
I emailed the box about seven times asking them when they were going to playlist 'In My Pocket'. :shy:
Cry ALMOST got a UK release, I saw it on MTV a few times. But alas... :(

From Loving You was the moment I realised I HATE DIANE WARREN. To think that shit was mooted as the lead single! :daf:
Actually it would probably have out-charted In My Pocket, but that's by the by.

I really think the middle section from '17' through to 'Yo-Yo' is extraordinarily STRONG considering the nature in which the album was pushed out.
Even back then she was banging on about wanting more creative control, claiming she recorded the record without Record Company interference. She dismisses most of it now so I don't know how much of it was true, but she was always the most content-minded of her peer group.
It's a real shame she never had a proper hit, but she seems happier being an indie queen and occasional film star.
I will defend to the death my conviction that of her, Britney, Jessica and Christina she is by FAR the best singer. As an actual singer of songs, rather than self-indulgent screamer, she is streets ahead of the rest. Her voice is beautiful.

Like most people I suspect, I never took notice of her as a singer until 'A Walk To Remember'. She certainly suits the route she's taken since the first album, but arguably she's the ONLY one of the early-00's pop singers to be doing what she does more or less free of a corporate marketing campaign.
Whether Britney likes what she does (or is even aware of it), she's undoubtedly led by the market at the moment. As is Christina to a certain extent, she certainly needs a few HITS under her belt to prove herself against Gaga. Jessica Simpson has no choice in the matter, she's probably the most puppeted of the lot.
Britney is totally market led. Christina seems torn between her self-indulgence and her desire to remain a major commercial force. Jessica is, as you say, creatively bankrupt and has no direction whatsoever. Mandy has essentially removed herself from the equation. Nothing she's released since this album has been pop viable or trying to be.
Which makes me a bit sad, but at least she's happy. And I do enjoy her new stuff for what it is. Nowadays I channel my Mandy-fandom, which will never go away because she was the first act I really LOONED over, into hoping she has a proper breakthrough film role someday and becomes the new Drew Barrymore.
Something tells me Swinging With The Finkels (co-starring Martin Freeman) won't be it. :bruised:
Although if the Rapunzel movie pays off she might get to sing an OSCAR WINNING SONG. :o

I'm quite surprised she's scored the lead in that, probably her most high-profile to date. I won't be entirely happy unless Rapunzel warbles a few bars from 'I Wanna Be With You' from her tower.
You never know VoR, never stop reaching for the STARS!

She never got a chance in the UK. "Candy" was a huge misrepresentation of her abilities, portraying her as being some run-of-the-mill, Britney bandwagon jumper with an average voice and 0% originality. I liked how the UK stores such as Woolies predicted she'd be an automatic number 1 simply because it was very much of the time, when in fact she missed the top 5 altogether. The album (released two weeks later) never stood a chance.
"I Wanna Be With You" was shite too.
To be fair her first two albums WERE watered down Britney leftovers, although given her superior voice there is a fair bit to admire on both of them if you like that sort of thing.
I still love love love I Wanna Be With You. It was that which really turned me onto her.

Nowt wrong with 'I Wanna Be With You'. Still an ace little pop number.
It was just so CLASSY compared to what her contemporaries were churning out at the time.
Oh I'm back in full loon mode now. I thought I'd left these days behind me! :D

Love always, Mandy.
Love always, Mandy.
Do it in full or don't do it at all Kratz.
You know who you are
Your love's as sweet as Candy
I'll be forever yours
Love always
MANDY
AMAZING
It took the Pet Shop Boys about 4 albums to have the confidence to namecheck themselves. Mandy did it on her debut single.

I almost CRIED when I travelled to America in 2000, bought the special edition of the debut album to find it was the fucking Wade Robson remix of 'Candy'

I almost bought £50 of Mandy Moore imports on a 2000 visit to Florida - but didn't.
I was such an imp back then.

Whatever happened to Devil? He went gay and then disappeared. Hopefully delirium has fucked him on his tour round Antipodean gays.
I recall Candy going #6 or am I Wrong? Still it was a TOP 10 hit

Yes,
Candy got to #6
I Wanna Be With You got to #21.
The end.
I always mean to investigate her post-2001 albums but never get around to it. I love her singer/songwriter thing she's picked up but I still feel she's a bit dull.
Mandy Moore top 5:
1. Walk Me Home
2. In My Pocket
3. Candy
4. I Wanna Be With You
5. I Could Break Your Heart Any Day of the Week
"Cry" was good too.

I bought this yonks ago in a secondspin splurge but only listened to it for the first time yesterday evening. Not a bad little album at all, really liked a few songs in fact, namely "You remind me", "Cry" and "Crush". Still prefer "Coverage" as an album though
