View Full Version : Kelis appreciation
I haven't listened to her albums for AGES, but stuck them on today. "Tasty" is really a cracking little album, an absolute crime that it only gave her one US hit.
But "Kaleidoscope" is really where it's it. Tracks 1-7 are absolutely WOW. Neptunes at their very finest.
Any news on what she's up to? New album PLEASE.

Kaleidoscope was Kelis at her best. It's possibly one of my favourite albums ever. So very consistent - not only are there no bad tracks, but most of them are wonderful. Wanderland is OK, if a bit patchy and Tasty was a bit to generic for my liking.
Suspended is AMAZING
Suspended is absolutely haunting, but "Get Along With You" remains her masterpiece IMO. Everything about it was perfect, the song, the video... everything but the chart position.

She has quite a collection of very fine tunes, for someone without THAT greater profile...

NO
What I mean by that is: I would but I for some reason my entire Kelis collection is copy-protected...

As successful as the singles from Tasty were, I don't think the album was a patch on Kaleidoscope, which is probably one of the most inventive R&B albums this decade.
I don't think Neptunes had done anything much of note before it and them producing the whole album really worked. I don't think they've ever bettered the first three singles really.
Was quite surprised to see she hardly had any input on it though. A lot of the lyrics seemed quite personal and she just seems like the kind of artist who would write her own stuff.
Wanderland was awful though.

I overplayed Tasty. I do love it though.
She has a certain quality. I love the fact that she isn't another Amerie/Ashanti/Milian/Brandy/Monica....

Yes, you wouldn't catch them talking about sucking some cock in a spaceship would you? And not in a herpes-ridden Lil' Kim kind of way either.

I like all three of her albums. Kaleidoscope being the best. Unfortunately I lost Wanderland when my laptop fucked up. PGCMc sent it to me...I really should pick up the CD one day.
She really should be bigger than she is. Good songs, strong personality, good unique look. I think she just doesnt care. From what Ive heard she can be a bit half arsed when it comes to touring and promoting.

noone seems to know 'GoodStuff' but I made sure it was played at my party and the dancefloor was packed, it's got such a good baseline.
And there's a REALLY catchy mix of 'Young Fresh and New' which Funky promotes in his spare time which I'd reccomend. I bought the CD single after hearing the mix on the radio, disapointed to find the slower dredgy version which sounded like the drunken, a little bit 'special' older sister.

Kaleidoscope is her best with Tasty being close 2nd. Still think Get Along With You is her best song and video
The No Doubt track is horrible, I had high hopes for it.

She didn't even bother with a video for her last single! Nothing, not even a montage/tour video or anything - just zilch! Still went top 20 :o
I find her rather average. Has some winner singles, but "Tasty" was average, I've played it like twice.
"Millionaire" is class, though.

Ah yes, Kelis.... she SHOULD be huge but she's just a lazy bitch really. Turning up late for gigs, performing for 40 minutes, no videos, no promo.
But signed nonetheless. Kaleidoscope is a stunner & the all too rare thing: an R&B album which isn't 75% filler or dreary ballads. Some of the Neptunes best work ever but she still makes it sound completely her own rather then 'The Neptunes featuring Kelis' which it so easily could have become.
Wanderland and Tasty are not as good but still have their moments.

She's fallen out with the Neptunes and will not be working with them again. She has moved off their label I believe. Good move or bad, I'm not sure. I suppose it will be interesting what she comes up with next.
And I totally agree, Get Along With You is her best work!
noone seems to know 'GoodStuff' but I made sure it was played at my party and the dancefloor was packed, it's got such a good baseline.
EVERYONE I know, knows 'Good Stuff'. That and 'Get Along With You' are her finest moments. 'Kaleidoscope' is one of the best modern r'n'b albums by any artist ever.

Has anyone listened to her "Shhh (whisper song)" answer?
I think it was confirmed that she was not the one who sang on the female version of The Whisper Song.
