View Full Version : In Her Shoes
Surprised Sheena hasn't mentioned this in here, but I guess with Madonna Day on his mind he's had FAR more important things to worry about. We went to see this on Saturday and both had moderate hopes for it...
My GOD. It's SUPERB. Cameron Diaz's performance is superb, Toni Collette's understated and sublime and Shirley McClaine will be unfortunate not to get a Supporting Actress nod at the Oscars.
Every character, major and minor, is well written with hidden depths, and every performance is great.
It's funny, touching, heartwarming. Yeah it's KINDA a girly movie in places, but it's certainly one of those girly movies where the boyfriend could go with his girlfriend, enjoy it and kinda pretend he didn't enjoy it, but you can tell he really did think it was quite amusing deep down.
5 stars from the cwoj jury.

One of the best things ive seen this year and certainly the best acting. Diaz, who Ive always liked anyway, is a revelation- she will be unlucky to not get an Oscar nod for this, though her and Collette may split the vote....
Brilliant, just brilliant

REALLY?
Blimey, maybe they're advertising it all wrong but to me it just looked completley plotless. And I couldn't tell whether it was meant to be a comedy or chick flicky sap; is it either?
Viva la whore!

It's both. But classier.
But the performances are great all round - every supporting actor gets every single line perfect. I think Collette is more likely to get the Academy on her side, just because of past history... she's more highly regarded by critics than Cameron Diaz, rightly or wrongly. But at the same time, Diaz's performance shines from beginning to end. Ooo... it would be a tough choice between them. Which is why i think NEITHER will be nominated!
Incidentally, I DO believe that's the FIRST TIME me and Sheena have left the cinema thinking exactly the same about a film.

Its amazing Su just said about how they advertised it- Cwoj and i sat in the cinema and saw the trailer last week and it put us BOTH off seeing it. Im glad we changed our minds...
I very much doubt it'll get any Oscar notices, Reviews for it were decidedly average.
I do wanna see it though! Moreso now that my movie twin has given it his approval.

And yes, "Muriel's Wedding" is a great film. I love it...
Oh my god. Its better than DANCING QUEEN....
She is superb in that but I think COllette's best work is in "The Sixth Sense". Her portrayal there of a mother ravaged by the love of her child but desperately slowly losing the plot with frustration and exasperation is heartbreaking, it really is. Fully deserved her Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination...

No they weren't- all the ones ive seen have been minimum 4 star reviews...
Will only get them for acting though if anything
Oh I stand corrected! I checked Rottentomatoes.com when it came out and it had like 38%, but now it's up to 75!
I must have looked too early
Anyway i'd LOVE to see Toni Collette get an Oscar. She's fucking wonderful. I've never seen her give a performance I didn't like. Even in the hours, she has just one scene but she plays it brilliantly. Such a versatile actress.

Im a Toni Collette fan...probably my second favourite actress after Ms Kidman

I want to see this
Speaking of Nicole Kidman I picked up "Portrait Of A Lady" yesterday. It's quite good, although Nicole doesn't really seem to make her mark on it. For me Barbara Hershey stole every scene she was in.
Whatever happened to her anyway?

Much appreciation for Toni Collette from me. Fantastic actress.
Portrait Of A Lady is STUNNING. Hershey does walk away with her scenes but I think Nicole Kidman plays Isobel brilliantly. It's a tough part, more of a cipher than a fully fledged character. She has to develop as the story goes on and it isn't really until the end that she starts to actively influence her life rather than just experience it... The film looks great and the ending is just WOW.
Oh and I was amused to discover it contained a small role for everyone's favourite NON-OVERRACTOR as well....
I think she was good in this too

I shall be seeing this on Thursday. There were a few films out this week I actually quite FANCIED (for the first time in ages), but a chick flicky thing with Toni Collette is bound to get the nod really.
Even in Connie & Carla Toni remains charming and blameless. That Nia CREATURE is another matter.

Thank god Nia Vardalos has since been consigned to the DUMPER. My Big Fat Greek Wedding was HIDEOUSLY overrrated.

Third after Audrey Tautou no?
Ohand VOR I can guarantee you'll LOVE it. I KNOW what you're like with movies...
I'll go when i get paid next friday methinks.
Oh and Cwoj have you seen "Lantana"? Stumbled accross it today while reading about Barbara Hershey in a film geek manner. It sounds well good. It has like 95% at Rottentomatoes too. I smell an impulse buy.

Get those lesbians of yours round your sofa, plug in 'Show Me Love/Fucking Amal' and watch them SPUNK
I'd WELL reccomend a quadruple Lukas Moodyson DVD box set I saw in the foreign section of HMV. SERIOUSLY VoR, i think i know you quite well and you'd LOVE the first three movies
His latest, 'Ett Hal i Mit Hjarta/A Hole in My Heart' is too difficult for to watch more than 5 minutes of. It's ridiculous really, and I'm not alone in that testament...

I saw it this afternoon and loved it. Like Cwej said every character is well written and the acting was superb. I can't see Cameron Diaz or Toni Collette winning an Oscar for it as it seems a bit fluffy compared to winners of the last few years but Shirley McLaine could well come out with a Best Supporting Actress award *fingers crossed*
I read an interview with Shirley Maclaine recently when she was promoting "Bewitched". She came accross as a right LOON.
Frozen

Shirley is a LOON, that's long been established. Don't u know she's had many previous lives?
I just watched this. I did enjoy it a lot, but I have to say I wasn't BLOWN AWAY.
I did really enjoy all the major performances, particularly Shirley Maclaine who could have been irritatingly sentimental but instead played it just right and was wonderful.
I found it a bit too... i dunno.... treacly? It was all a bit too join the dots. You could see every plot twist happening a mile off. Maggie and that old guy in particular, without giving anything away, you just KNOW what's coming as soon as he arrives. That's not the only thing either, the film was full of niggly little obvious cliche's and overly cutesy things that really bugged me. I know the film isn't about surprises or shocks, but I just felt the cliche's bogged it down, I sighed inwardly whenever they popped up. Maybe I was being too critical.
I'd say 7.5/10
Yes you're right, you're being too critical. It's not meant to be arty or surprising or full of out of this world plot twists. If you take it for what it is, it's a fucking EXCELLENT movie.
And I agree, I think Shirley Maclaine is definitely the most likely to bag herself awards for this, because for some reason supporting roles are more often winners in the less 'dramatic' movies...
