:zombie:

Right, first off lets start with the most laughable entry on my list. I apologise in advance...

30:Route One F/Jenny Frost - Crash Landing

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000BBYS7O.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I'm rising from the ashes like a phoenix from the flames...

Ahem.... moving swiftly on I feel..... :shy:

Oh alright, what can I say? Vile coke addled talent free anorexic harridan releases solo single on cheapo dance label, fails hilariously. But I love it. I first heard it on some cheapo compilation we were playing in work, I had no idea who it was, but i thought it was a pretty great pop song. Imagine my HORROR when I learned the truth. It does get stuck in your head though.

29: Faith Evans - Again

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00097HN5O.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I wouldn't take away the rain, cos this experience made me who i am

Ah, for a few minutes there it almost looked like Faith Evans was finally going to get a long deserved Mary J.Blige-esque UK breakthrough. I've always been quite fond of her, though I don't own any of her records as yet. She has the most beautiful voice, and before fatman scoop MASSACRED it, "Love Like This" was one of the most infectious little pop songs ever. This sounded fairly bland at first but it grows on you like a weed. Alas, I think she's doomed to be eternally underrated.

28: Garbage - Why Do You Love Me?

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0007XTQEG.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I get back up and I do it again, I get back up and I do it, do it again

Ah, now if they'd only released "It's All Over But The Crying" as a single it'd be up in my top 3 of the year. Sadly this is as high as they're going to get. It's fairly perfunctory Garbage really, nothing new at all, which could be said for a lot of the new album. The whole thing was a birrova damp squib really, though certain tracks on the album ARE wonderful. The cancelled tour in particular and the whole "We're not really breaking up, its just an extended leave" thing just add insult to injury. Still, the excitement of this being their biggest hit in YEARS and those few weeks when it looked like they might be proper BACK are enough to give it a place in my list.

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000B69GKS.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

My sexy ass has got him in a new dimension

Urgh, what a hideous single cover. Anyway, this is quite low cos it's been played to death now. But it really is all kinds of wonderful. What a singles act the 'babes are! I really, really want them to do one more great album before the Greatest Hits. If they do, it'll be fucking superb.

26: Charlotte Church - Call My Name

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000AUZUCS.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I like a lot of things, baby you know MEEEEEEEE

Now i'm in the vast minority here I think, but I much prefer this to "Crazy Chick". That song took a while to grow on me, but it finally has. I liked this one instantly though. There's something quite old fashioned and cabaret about it, but not in a bad way. Also points for Charlotte SLAGGING it up in the video with her wobbly breasts. I just find her very funny and likeable when she's doing stuff like this, though she needs to lay off Girls Aloud, cos she's basically making the same kind of music but less inventive.

25: Jem - They

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0007UT5I6.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

And it's ironic too, cos what we tend to do, is act on what they say, and then it is that way

I HATE Jem. HATE HATE HATE. I have never been so disappointed in any album i've bought all year. Dreary, irritating, coffee table, and Q magazine acting like she's some kind of genius is just infuriating. But this song I love. It's everything the rest of the album is not. Inventive, sensual, different, and makes you sit up and think 'Who IS this?'. The lyrics are actually a bit guff if you actually pay any attention, but still, one of the best little pop singles of the year from one of the most disappointing sources. Here's hoping her next record is better.

24. KT Tunstall - Other Side Of The World

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0009F9OM6.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Over the hills and far away....

Does anyone really, really hate KT Tunstall? I don't love her by any means, I still haven't bothered with the album. But as overplayed as her music has been this year, it's still quite enjoyable, and I haven't heard any of the usual criticism people who make her sort of music get. Nothing spectacular here, just a really nice song that did quite well, from a quite nice album. Essentially, she's good at her job.

Watch her CLEAN UP at the BRITS in a few months though, which is actually quite dull and predictable.

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0002IU0JQ.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

WHAYAWAAAAN Bucky Done Gun!

I can't find the cover but this WAS a single, wasn't it? Anyway it ended up on the Mercury shortlist at work. When I first heard it i thought "What the HELL?" It sounded like a hilarious mess. But then I spent the rest of the day with it in my head. It's brilliant. I worried about including this, because it's as credible as my list gets and i'm sure certain people will be APPALLED by the stuff I'm putting above it. Well TOUGH. I don't think I could tolerate a full album of this stuff, but this is just too catchy to miss out.

Still not really interested in the album though, so it hasn't done the trick in that regard...

22. Goldfrapp - Ooh La La

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000A3MHOY.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I want to touch you, you're just made for love

If Goldfrapp only ever got one massive hit in their career, it should have been "Strict Machine". Yes "Lovely Head" and "Pilots" are more artsy and almost certainly better songs, but that is one of my favourite POP songs of the 00's, no doubt about it. Still, it was nice to see them finally break through with this. It's not quite up there with that song, but it is another really catchy one. Alison is a bit of a cunt by all accounts but a great frontwoman. She really sells this one.

21. Raghav - Angel Eyes

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00061X97Y.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Cos my baby's got OOOOOOOOOH Angel Eyes

Anyone remember this? :D Raghav really confused me, cos before this he had quite a few big-ish hits that all sounded exactly the same and really boring. It was like he was forced into the charts by the equal opportunities board. I was baffled as to who was buying them. At the end of the day though his album bombed and it seemed he was gonna be a flash in the pan. Then he came out with this INSANELY catchy song which I just thought was absolutely brilliant. It did rather well too, as I recall, but evidently not good enough as he hasn't been seen since.

Still, near top marks from me. Would be slightly higher without the annoying shouty guy.

20: The Cardigans - I Need Some Fine Wine, And You, You Need To Be Nicer

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000BEPLW2.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

SIT!

Best song title of the year, hands down. It's such a shame nobody buys Cardigans records any more. Nina Persson remains one of the best pop singers around today IMO, what she lacks in range she makes up for in sheer character and warmth. This song really had all the ingrediants for a massive hit, but sadly it didn't happen. If it had, maybe it'd be higher, but the sense of disappointment around the whole thing (The public reception to them I mean, not the album which is dandy) brings it down.

Ugh, I don't care for that Raghav song much. Such an annoying chorus...

I got the album but it's disappointing. I was expecting something a little more interesting but it's DULL. "So Confused" was good though.

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0009SQ6C4.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I'm not getting younger

Poor Alexis. One of the biggest disasters of the year. About 8 people actually went out and bought it. Still, it's like a big audio hug and i'm not going to rave too much about it cos i'm preaching to the converted here. Still, if you're stupid enough to have missed it thus far, redeem yourself NOW.

No-one knows, i'm not coming home tonight

Wins the Ginger Scouser Award for the most unlikely hit of the year. I seriously thought this would be lucky to scrape the top 75 in this day and age, regardless of quality. "Look On The Floor" is almost as good, maybe slightly better even, but this one tops it for sheer excitement when it became a legitimate hit. ish.

My baby shot me DOWN DOWN DOWN DOWN

A proper HIT this one. Enters fairly low, zips into the top 3 and stays around FOREVER. It was so nice to see that happen. I agree with the general concensus that the short version is better. All it really is is one quite an inspired idea, and six minutes of it somewhat labours the point.

ALLLL the riches baby, won't mean ANYTHING

God that bit I just quoted is irresistible. Well, to me anyway. I absolutely love it. The rest of the song is pretty fun, but that bit is just absolutely ace. Hands in the air, silly dance routine after lots of beers at your local crappy nightclub ace. She's outstayed her welcome a bit now with her silly single choices and overplay, but this song never got old for me. I still get ridiculously excited when it gets played in a club.

15. Madonna - Hung Up

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000BND3HS.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Every little thing that you say or do...

When I heard Madonna was doing a dance pop album and sampling ABBA for the lead single, I thought "DESPERATION". I thought it was going to be appalling. When I heard clips of the song I thought I was right, it sounded like cobbled together sub-Dannii rubbish. Then I heard the full song. I can't put my finger on it, but it's just pitched absolutely perfectly. The ABBA sample that sounded far too prominent and annoying in the clips sounds absolutely joyous in the full thing. The most well crafted pop song of the year, probably. Played to DEATH now, but what a massive hit. Good on her.

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000BBYS4C.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

They don't know, they don't see, who we are, fear is the enemy

Cool. As. Fuck. There was no way these girls could EVER have a proper comeback with their reputation. Coming back at all they should have seemed tired, past their sell by date and pointless. But they cleverly avoided rehashing the boring fake lesbian thing, putting a clever little spin on it instead, and more importantly, coming back with absolutely the most genius video of the year. It almost makes the song irrelevant, but it isn't. It's t.A.T.u. by number, but thats still better than most other pop music. I actually really like the ginners high pitched wailing in the bridge, it's quite sweet.

Oh what a heat of your loving heartbeat

I was quite excited about Annie after she released one of the cleverest slices of underrated slut-pop last year with "Chewing Gum". I expected her followup single to be more of the same, which would have been great. The last thing I expected (Well, maybe not the last thing, she could have come out with a gregorian chant or something I suppose) was that her followup would be one of the prettiest, sweetest songs of the year. It's still dance pop, and very catchy, but it's also lovely. Never a big hit after Chewing Gum flopped though. She should have done "Me Plus One". :(

Ah! A bit of GLORIA back in the charts! Yay! I've always loved the original, it was one of those songs my mum used to make me sing along to as a kid. The two songs are mixed together really cleverly and it's generally just ace. Pleasing to see it REFUSE to leave the charts too.

I really, really can't stand this group. I liked "Request Line" with Macy Gray, but all their big hits are APPALLING, chav anthems. Even "Shut Up" was just horrendous shouty crap to these ears. Try as i might to resist this one though, I can't. I love it. It's just TOO catchy. "Don't Lie" was alright too, but they've gone and RUINED it with "My Humps", which now gets all the play and means this one is ignored. :(
