It's just stuck on pause and says it's on hold (but it's not).
When I tried to plug it into my computer to charge it, it said the USB device had malfunctioned?
What does one do in these situations? Just WAIT for it to unfreeze??

That happened to mine. I had to leave it on til the batteries had run out because NOTHING would unstick it. It worked fine then when I switched it back on.
I've not had any other problems in over a year though so I can't complain really.

Reset it by pressing down the centre button and Menu, or let the batteries run out.

just to share some experience i had my first big ipod freeze fright
not only did it freeze, but it killed my computer when i plugged it in, it didn't respond to any toggling, resetting, plugging in the power, itunes said it's "corrupt" and had to be restored to original setting, i.e. everything on it had to be erased
well i read on some forum something that magically helped - you plug it in the power, you put it on a flat horizontal surface, you toggle the hold switch and then press the enter and menu buttons together
it was like a mini-CPR session
anyway horizontal is the new missionary
all it takes is a quick search on the apple FAQs to tell you how to do a reboot. something that is essentially a hard drive is going to crash every now and again to be fair.
