Which (if any) of the main "soaps" do you watch?

I used to watch four Neighbours, Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Eastenders) religiously but now I don't watch any.

Neighbours became rather bland and I gave up after Sky+ing it on five. Watching a few episodes back to back make your realise what a waste of time it is.

Emmerdale lost it around the time Sadie left. It's far too comedic and some of the Dingle 'antics' are beyond ridiculous. I'm not sure i'll ever get back to watching it. Maybe if they do another disaster storyline.

The Rosie kidnap saga and that awful new family put me off Corrie. I also detest Kym Marsh. I tried watching some of it recently and I got very confused over what was supposed to be going on with Eileen's family.

Eastenders is still the best but again nothing is going on. Nasty Nick coming back really is a sign they're running out of ideas. It's been done to death. They need some new fit young men to spice it up a bit, and some big stories for Pat.

Oh Corrie has a massive place in my heart, my dream is to one day work on it. I've been a bit naughty recently and haven't watched an episode in about 3 weeks or so. This might be a side effect of the last one i watched being all about KIM MARSH.

Even when it's a bit shaky though i still find it very watchable, they have the best writers I think by quite a long way. Character wise they're also very strong, although at the moment there re about 5-10 characters i couldn't give a shit about (Fuck off Tina's Dad and the Windasses). A few years ago I loved every single one, all 50+ of them, which was a massive achievement.

Eastenders I also quite like, and these last few years it's been filled with many good characters again. I just don't want to watch two soap (TOO MUCH COMMITMENT) and you still do get some utter shit with Easties. They try harder with their storylines and sometimes fail harder because of it I think. I adore Jean Slater though, and Barbara Windsor.

I stopped watching it when it went to Channel 5. Then must have started again about 3 years ago, with several breaks inbetween.

Its actually really quite good with some "dramatic" storylines. Fortunately I have persuaded some of my friends to give it a go and they now love it :D

Other than H&A, I only watch Hollyoaks, although I can happily miss it for a week at a time. I get irritated by it because they do tend to drag storylines out for too long...much like most soaps I guess.

That's exactly my problem (well not the food channel bit). Of course I know I spend far more time arsing around on the internet than my mother does watching Corrie each week, but it's the thought of the COMMITMENT to it that puts me off. I like my TV to be very much 'dip in, dip out'. Even series I follow I record and then watch them when I want to. With a programme that is on 3 or more times a week, I know they would just stack up and I'd never get around to it. Of course there's the fact that none of the soaps appeal to me very much to consider as well.

Do you get any of the American soaps in the UK? When I was in Sydney last year I was amazed that DAYS OF OUR LIVES was quite popular there. That's the one American soap I "watch", more accurately sit at the computer with the nearby tv turned to that channel. The amusing thing with American soaps in general is their very elastic sense of time. One evening's party can take place over several weeks of episodes, but in the same time period a baby can be born and grow into a toddler that walks and talks (within a year or two that toddler will be a troubled teenager).

It has a great mix of camp and sombre, never takes itself too seriously, and does a great job at making its characters real, in that the long term characters aren't heroes or villains, they don't tell you who to like; all characters are likeable and flawed in different ways and they interact differently.

There are more long term characters in Corrie too, so the history of the show is more prevalant.

Eastenders is by far the most insulting, patronising, badly acted and badly written television show around today. I cannot think of anything worse. I'd rather watch Corden & Horne.

Too true. Coronation Street is so brilliantly character driven that it doesn't need constant drama.

Eastenders needs the big plots but the turnover of storylines is rapid, making the drama insipid and the characters ever more inconsistent. I also find it to be ridiculously sentimental (there is always some reference to the cockney 'blitz spirit') and it's attempts at replicating Coronation Street's comedy are frankly cringeworthy.
