I've decided I want an iPod Touch. FINALLY. But just doing a little bit of looking about, I noticed that the 2nd gen version was released last September. Does that mean a 3rd gen will be out later this year? I know all the apple hoopla has been focussed on the new iPhone, but now that's out there, will we be seeing a new Touch?

Apple are notoriously tightlipped about their product releases. They tend to announce them and release them on the same day - only very occasionally do they announce things in advance.
However, the signs are that there will be a new iPod Touch this autumn. Details are sketchy but the current consensus is that it will have a minor design overhaul and include a camera this time too.
Oh I think I will be getting the third gen iPod Touch when it does come out (whenever it is)... my iPod Touch (1st gen) which I got in June of 2008 is already getting a bit dodgy and its battery life seems to be shot nowadays as well... I still love it loads though and it still functions so I don't think I'll need a new one for a good while.

One for the Christmas list, then! I wonder if they will increase memory capacity?

When you say what people are discussing, is that what people want or what is realistic, do you think?
Christian

I'm sure they will increase the capacity, especially as the iPhone is already up to 32 GB in storage.

When you say what people are discussing, is that what people want or what is realistic, do you think? It's a combination. It's what people would like to see but the "yes/no"s indicate whether the consensus is for or against actually seeing those features.
I don't think it will be massively different to the current Touch, in the same way that the 3GS phone is basically a souped up, sexier version of the 3G phone.

I cannot think about upgrading my iPod unless they do something that hits 100 GB storage. I've got 80 at the moment and that leaves no room for anything besides audio. I've only got about another 4 GB and it'll be full.

It's really quite ridiculous to think that just 5-6 years ago, juggling music on an MP3 player consisted of trying to single out 32 - 60 tracks and now we're dissatisfied when anything less than an ENTIRE music collection doesn't fit.

I've got a bit of spare cash this month and REALLY want to buy one. But it's pointless until the new one comes out, isn't it? :(

I'm giving it a quick 10 mins in the freezer before I open it up and play with the insides.

Good news: I managed to freeze it, rewarm it, open it, disconnect the lead and hard disk and shake the disc violently.
Bad news:

CHING!
The 8GB model will now retail for £149.99, while the 32GB model will be available for £229.99.
A new high-end model sized at 64GB will retail for £299.99.
While the 8GB will include no upgrades from the previous generation, the other units will experience a 50% increase in processor speed to match that of the iPhone 3GS.

They've put a bloody camera on the fucking iPod Nano and not on the Touch.. :bad:

I don't really care about a camera. The one on my phone is better than it would be on the Touch in any case.

If it's anything like the camera on the iPhone, it won't be very good.

I got some great pictures on my iPhone this weeked. Obviously it's not a replacement for the DSLR but it's decent enough for something that's always in my pocket.

Hang on, it's available NOW?
PercyPig

Yep. With every apple announcement all the products that they mention (bar the original iPhone) are available straight away.

That must be a nightmate to co-ordinate. So all the sparkly new Touches are sat out in the stores just waiting for the announcement before they can appear on the shelf? :D

Why don't amazon have the 3rd generation? Are they exclusive to Apple stores or something at first?

Well interesting, apparently there will be no camera on the Touch because Steve Jobs has declared it a gaming machine.

Be interesting to see how this pans out when the PSPgo Mini's store opens up.

"32GB model will be available for £229.99"
Well it gives you 16GB more than a Go, is it expandable though, I know the Go is. If I wanted a tiny player though, I'd still plump for a Go. You can't play Final Fantasy 7 on an iPhone.
Oh I suppose its not touchscreen though.
Christian

The Go's much bigger than an iPod Touch isn't it? I don't think you could put it in your pocket.
I think the iPod Touch as a gaming device is pushing it myself but it does seem to be borne out of the market response. Still, as I see it, the iPod Touch is a great MP3 player that also does games and the Go is a handheld gaming device that also does music. Not such a subtle distinction.
It'll be interesting to see if Sony get the Go Store right. They need to get the pricing at a similar level to see that kind of volume the App Store is getting. I think the base price for developing for the Go is way higher than for the App Store which will definitely affect the type of stuff you see on the device.

The worst fucking games console of all time then!
I'd never by anything off the store that's a "game", you need physical buttons or someone with the ideas (i.e Nintendo) to make something decent for a touch screen like that.
Christian
11-09-2009, 05:47 PM
Oh, there are some amazing games on the Touch/Phone - notably the ones that have been tailored to the machine. Anything that requires physical buttons is a no no for me. But some of the ones that are built for the platform have been properly brilliant.

WHY ISN'T IT IN THE SHOPS YET?
I went into the apple store today and NO SIGN
Christian

Strange, they're available to buy online. Did you ask in the Apple Store?
I didn't like Rolando much either, it got right on my tits. Stuff like Fieldrunners, Puzzle Quest, Peggle and Bookworm I've absolutely thrashed to bits though. It's the absolutely ideal platform for on the go gaming, particularly as I always have it with me.

No. Typical really, the only time I go in there WANTING someone to help me, and I'm not pounced on within 30 seconds! But I went to the display and they never had them, and all the tickets with the prices on were still relating to the 2nd generation ones.

And I assume you mean at Apple online, Christian? I'd rather buy through the moopy amazon link as it would be worth a few quid. The prices are all the same everywhere, aren't they?

I'm going to get a 160Gb iPod Classic maybe next month. I can't remember how much I paid for my 80Gb roughly a year ago, but it certainly wasn't THAT far off £189.
