I can see why most of these would be excluded.
Poor "Dear Jessie" though. :nun:

Papa Don't Preach
Take A Bow
Don't Cry For Me Argentina
So onto the chart PROPER I guess

I'd like to think the same could be said of certain other well-known-and-successful-but-nowhere-near-her-best classics, but I doubt it. However I hope a certain few are low down the list..

50. Bad Girl
Available on "Erotica" (1992); UK Single- #10, 1993
I don't wanna feel blue...
"Bad Girl" was Madonna's smallest hit for some time in the UK and the US and the first sign perhaps that she was destructable after all. God knows why, it's a beautiful, heart-wrenching little thing with an epic video (perhaps her last "great" story video...) that starred Christopher Walken as death and some fit totty that killed her with a pair of tights after fucking her. Good old Madge...

Like what ?
And Suedey, I AGONISED over it, but it just misses out at #51. Plenty more "LAP" stuff to come though, as you can imagine...

Pleasing.
The line "Is it me, or you that I'm afraid of?" always gets to me.

I can't see why Dear Jessie is so popular. It certainly has novelty value but in my opnion, it's the weakest track on that album by far.

49. Sky Fits Heaven
Available on "Ray Of Light" (1998)
Watching the signs as I go...
Hmmm, now I wondered whether this should go in or not as I've never been the massive fan that so many Madge fans are- it was the cause of much outcry when it was finally deemed not good enough for a single release by the obsessives. Still, it holds wonderful memories of my time living in France, its tight little techno hooks playing wonderfully into the hands of our friends across the channel and their tastes and it seemed to be spun in every trendy nightclub I sat foot in that year. Perhaps a little too much in the same vein as "ROL" to be considered a single and perhaps why its not higher in my list, but still a fine album track and one that shows the perfect blend of Madge's commercial and dance sensibilities

It' just.... lovely! The strings, the imaginative lyrics, etc. And that transition into "Oh Father" - well, easily the best transition on any Madge album.
Plenty of people hate it though.

Well IM going to be CONTROVERSIAL, ARENT I ?
Lets just say Ive always been a fan of Madge's pop edge rather than the songs im SUPPOSED to like ;)
Still, both are wonderful songs- the top 100 would all score 7/10 or more for me...

Another fine song. I still think it should have been a single instead of the average "Nothing Really Matters."

48. Forbidden Love
Available on "Bedtime Stories" (1994)
Love should always feel like this...
The lesser known of Madonna's Babyface collaborations, this was also mooted for a single release at one point and it's easy to see why. At first listen it sounds like a simple mid-tempo slush song but then the sleazy whining in the background creeps in, the whispers (by Babyface) grab at the senses and it gets into your mind, as well as your crotch ;) I truly believe this is one of the sexiest things she's ever done. She sounds so vulnerable and fragile and on the outro you can almost hear her heart breaking. Beautifully produced, wonderfully emotive singing, always welcome on the turntable chez Shee.

Oh and Drowned World as far as popular songs among Madge fans go. Don't put it TOO high, if you do  ;)

A song that I personally could give or take, but I salute you on including this instead of "Take a Bow" - this one is definitely the better song. I also share your sentiments on the final semi-spoken bits, lovely.
And don't listen to Raining on Me about "Drowned World" - it's a Madge epic.

Now THIS is a good choice, definitely an under-rated track. It's songs like this that make me realise Bedtime Stories is actually not THAT bad an album. And yes, she does sound great, too.

47. Die Another Day
From "American Life" (2003); UK single- #3
I'm gonna AVOID the CLICHE
Now this is one of those that divides EVERYONE. Personally, if Madge was ever going to do a Bond theme (not a great idea in my opinion), I'd rather it was like this- keeping elements of the original whilst making it up to date, radically different to everything else both she and Bond themes had done before. I'll admit being a bit underwhelmed with it upon release but hindsight has shown its strengths. I adore the bit at the end on the album version where it has a mini-pregnant pause and then the violins crash back in to fade. That's the stuff dreams are made of...

Fantastic. Would be higher on my list, but I'm glad to see that you've given it a position in the first place. I love her demonic laughter too - puts Janet right in her place with her prepubescent giggling.

I don't mind it all, but I don't see the fuss. Fine enough lyrically, but that's just not enough for me - I find the music rather dull indeed. Like "Mer Girl" too (I'm glad THAT didn't make it), although that's a lot more interesting for me, even though it's not technically better...if that makes sense.
"Ray Of Light" the song does very little for me, too. I absolutely hate saying that because it makes me look like one of these people who just says they dislike it to be different. Good job I adore "Frozen" and "The Power Of Goodbye" to pieces really (AND "Sky Fits Heaven" and "Nothing Really Matters"), in fact most of the ROL album...just not the title track or Drowned World and one or two others max.
It's still quite good though ;)

46. Human Nature
From "Bedtime Stories" (1994); UK Single- #8
Would it sound better if I were a man ?
FABULOUS bitch Madge. Coming off the reception the media had given her for "Erotica" and the "Sex" book, "Bedtime Stories" featured two direct smacks back- the middling "Survival" and this little killer. Dirty, squelchy, funk inspired backing (indeed, it even charted on the UK's official R&B chart), it's subject matter was always going to hinder it from getting TOO much airplay when released as a single, but its another of those fantastic vocal deliveries- you can hear the venom spitting out of her voice, yet its cleverly made to sound almost childlike- perhaps a commentary on the line Ive highlighted above. Not her greatest moment for sure, but an inspired one, and fucking CRIMINAL that they've edited the "Shit" out on GHV2...the BASTARDS

Dull? Dull?
It's a spacey, understated epic of a song. Those keyboard lines; the moody guitars; the intense build-up towards the bridge and the powerful vocal she unleashes; the surreal plinky-plonky piano bits; and finally the hushed, yet grand exitus of "And now I find, I've changed my mind/ This is my religion"
*disappears up Madge's arse completely, but with good reason as it's genius*

45. Runaway Lover
From "Music" (2000)
It doesn't pay...
Throwaway Madge at her best. No hidden message, just frenetic break-neck dance/techno-pop. Initially it was my favourite track from "Music", though admittedly that was soon overtaken. Often overlooked by fans who aren't happy with the fact that it's a straight up pop song and, my GOD, doesn't have a message, but following "American Life", that can sometimes be a GOOD thing, can't it ?

I think part of the reason that I love Drowned World so much is because of when I first got to hear it. As the first new Madonna album in nearly four years, there was HUGE anticipation when I got Ray of Light, and I put it on and Drowned World was first...it was just unlike any Madonna song I had heard before. I thought it was AMAZING...the guitars, the vocals, the lyrics...still love it to this day.
Oooh, I might just go and put it on now...

I wholly agree with you on both "Human Nature" and "Runaway Lover." The latter in particular is, as you said, as great a throaway, no-nonsense pop song as she's ever done (if slightly overproduced and overlong).

44. Beautiful Stranger
From "GHV2" (2001); UK single- #2
Haven't we met ?...
I remember hearing this for the first time on the radio in Austria, where i was SENTENCED for six months. I was blown away- its such a great summer pop song. Perfectly designed for the film, I love the sheer joie de vivre in her voice. The video matched this perfectly- she looked younger than she did for years and however basic the concept, it worked because of her sheer love and interest in it- somewhat different to the Madge of today who can't be arsed MAKING videos it seems, huh ? Still, it spawned the horrific rip- off "Amazing" but when the original is this good, its not such a bad thing
