OK - summer's here, I have most of the week off - so here's my list of summer vibe albums to listen to while lying in the garden basking in the sun:

20) Tim Buckley: "Happy Sad"

The third Tim Buckley album and the first where he seems to have found his true sound - laid-back, free-flowing jazz-tinged songs which turn and meander. The mood is set by the opener 'Strange Feeling' - slow and hazy - sitting in the sun after downing half a bottle of red wine. Best songs - 'Buzzin Fly' & 'Love from Room 109.http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000005IU0.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

19) Bob Dylan : "John Wesley Harding"

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0001M0KDE.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Dylan's first post-motorcycle crash official new album and the first to herald a new country-influence. The tone is stripped back and low-key - although the lyrics are some of his most complex ever. Here is the sound of a mythical 'lost' America - peopled with outlaws, prophets, poets and lovers. Contains 'All Along the Watchtower' , 'I'll Be Your Baby Tonight' and the superb 'Ballad of Frankie Lee & Judas Priest'.

18) Love "Forever Changes"

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0000594YM.0.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I was listening to this earlier - brilliant evocative stuff. Starts off with the acoustic-based "Alone Again Or" which positively smells of 1967 before launching into 'A House is not a Motel' with that brilliant guitar solo bursting in. A positive melting pot of different instrumentation and some great stoner lyrics eg on 'Live & Let Live' & 'Bummer in the Summer'.

17) "The Very Best of the Byrds " : The Byrds

The Byrds version of "Mr Tambourine Man" is the perfect summer anthem and this excellent compilation contains loads of other classics such as Gram Parsons' 'Hickory Wind' and of course 'Turn Turn Turn - to Everything there is a Season' and 'Ballad of Easy Rider'.http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000025QEC.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

16) "Harvest" : Neil Young

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000002KD1.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Not the best Neil Young album but one of the most mellow sounding - others in a similar vein include 'Comes a Time', 'Old Ways' & 'Harvest Moon'. Perfect for lazing in the grass to - 'Out on a Weekend' & 'Heart of Gold' being tinged with the Hank Williams tradition of country loneliness while 'The Needle & the Damage Done' is the best anti-drugs song I know.

15) Nico "Chelsea Girl"

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000001FOL.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

This was Nico's first album and is very different from her later gothic stuff like 'The Marble Index' - here the songs are pastoral and conventionally structured. None are Nico's own songs - but rather songs 'donated' to her by the likes of Lou Reed (Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams) and Dylan (I'll Keep it With Mine). The result is a mostly laid-back album - although the teutonic vocals do hint at the avant-garde darkness that was to follow.

14) The Grateful Dead "American Beauty"

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000002KBH.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

One of the greatest country-rock albums ever and a perfect 'chill out' album - contains 'Ripple' & 'Box of Rain' amid other classics.

13) "If I Could Only Remember My Name" - David Crosby

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000002I6T.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

One of the most underrated and extraordinary albums ever - songs like 'Music is Love' & 'Traction in the Rain' weave a gentle tapestry of sound - perfect for a summers day. The last two songs are incredible - 'Orleans' - sung almost like a Gregorian Chant, followed by a paen to his lover who had just died - a wordless vocal masterpiece 'I Could Swear there was Somebody Here'.

12) Jeff Buckley "Grace"

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000024E9Z.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Incredible album - one of the best of the 90s - amazing vocals (better than his dad's) and captures a range of moods from ecstasy to pained reflectiveness.

11) The Stone Roses: "The Stone Roses"

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00000745F.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

A great summer album - chockful of melodic - Byrds influenced songs - including the excellent 'Waterfall'. No real filler apart from the out-of-place 'Elizabeth My Dear'. The best song - well what else but "I Am the Resurrection"

10) Boney M- Boonoonoos

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000006T6P.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

The M arent just for christmas. They're for LIFE. This album doesn't feature quite enough FLESH on the cover but it does have "Silly Confusion" on it to brighten ANY summer day

9) The Goombay Dance Band- Mega Hit Mix

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00005R64L.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Perhaps rivalled only by the aforementioned "M", The Goombay Dance Band's Greatest hit "Seven Tears" is here reworked no less than seventeen times, making the perfect picnic soundtrack for any lazy afternoon, hayfever or NO hayfever...

OK its time for the great SUMMER top 10:

10) David Bowie: "Lets Dance"

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0000AZAUS.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Certainly not one of the best Bowie albums and the one that launched his bland 80s image. That said its a sparkling album - from "Modern Love" onwards the music is refreshing and upbeat.

9) The Kinks "The Ultimate Collection"

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00005V4WI.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

"Lazing on a sunny afternoon......" Also includes 'Waterloo Sunset' 'Days' & 'Lola' - summery classics all

8) Bob Dylan : "Desire"

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0001M0KCU.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Dylan's classic 1976 album - the soundtrack to one of the hottest summers ever! There is a great atmosphere to this album - the amateurish production has a ramshackle charm and Scarlet Rivera's violin colours the whole thing. The hilights include the angry 'Hurricane' and the Mexican influence reaches its height on 'Romance in Durango'. Every home should have one:angel:

7) The Doors: "Waiting For the Sun"

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000002I2B.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

The Doors' third album and one of their best - includes 'Hello I Love You', 'Summers Almost Gone', 'The Unknown Soldier' & 'Five to One'. Strangely the actual song 'Waiting For the Sun' isn't on it - but on the next album 'Morrison Hotel'.

I must say she does have a very distinctive voice. She may not have a big range, but it's defintely not boring and forgetable. Am thiinking of buying this and the Marble Index.
