One of very few songs the lady has self-penned in their entireity, "Say Hey" is chill out techno ambient trip-hop FABULOUSness at its very best. She sounds absolutely wonderful on this. So sexy, almost eerie, which fits beautifully with the lyrics, as Ive always personally read them as Kylie "stalking" an ex- "Its getting late, you might be sleeping, I couldnt wait...", "I'm missing you, I wish you were WITH me..." etc. I'd love to have heard some REALLY good mixes of this as I'm sure it would have gone down a storm in the clubs of the time. Just the right amount of kook, a whole dollop of sexiness, a seriously good chill out classic
it does have a stalker vibe to it... and I love the sparse music it starts off with. also the layered 'mmm's just make the song

Now this was techno-rock MADNESS as best done by the Prodigy but nicely imitated by none other than Kylie. You WHAT ? Just take a listen- its fucking ace. Breakneck skippy beats, a strong defiant vocal and just the right amount of techno twiddly bits. An absolute highlight (and surprise) of the "Fever" tour for me, this is another that could have been massive in clubland with the right mixes. And to think I dismissed it as a crap bside to "Some Kind Of Bliss" when I first heard it. Tsk...
ahhhh more love for IP. I still don't understand why the album didn't do as well as it had some stunning tracks on it i: and yes the Fever Tour version was brilliant

Say Hey and Limbo go along with Drunk as my fave IP tracks

Now this is a song to have sex to if ever there was one. One of few songs co-written by Kylie for the "Body Language" project, it simply sleeks into your consciousness and out again. Strings sweep in and out, she sounds so damned SEXY, breathy, horny even. I'd love to see a video for this- i imagine her being all filthy in a pool for some reason...

Oh, and had it ended the album from which it came, "Body Language" may seemed a WHOLE lot better...
a track that has slowly grown on me.... probably had to do with the BL album not quite hitting the expectations I had for it but it is indeed lovely

    should have been a single

Ah now this is more LIKE IT ! Another of her very few forays into writing an entire song by herself, this is possibly the most accomplished she has ever managed lyrically- I fucking LOVE the lyrics on this song, so complex. What do you take it to be about ? i've always put it to be about the pressures of fame, the madness that surrounds you when you are at your very peak. Whatever, its sung at a breakneck speed- and she nails it perfectly on the "Intimate and Live" cd and believe me, that takes some vocal control with the way this is sung- especially as its also in quite a low register (not natural to someone used to squeaking her way through her early material). Considered as a single at one point, hence the PLETHORA of mixes that have surfaced over the years (did we REALLY need three on the bonus disc of "Impossible Princess" though ? No, I dont think we DID....), many of which turn it into the techno STORMER it really should be. Glad it was never a single though. The perfect opener and statement of intent for its parent album and tour, mind...
this one slipped my mind.. so yet ANOTHER reason IP should have done better than it did

the Junior Mix was the second Kylie track I downloaded (back when homeofmusic.com was stil the place to find dance music/remixes in mp3 forrm)

    That we're through, oo-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

When this song entered at #2 in its week of release it actually was the biggest selling single of the week but the UK charts still didn't cater for the release of a cassette single, or at least a track "mini" cassette single as opposed to the wholly unsuccessful "extended" cassettes that had been released up until that point. "HOYH" was one of the first to be released in this format- certainly the first to popularise it- and Kylie narrowly missed being the first woman to debut at #1 in the UK charts. Fascinating fact for you...

Anyway, its a bog standard SAW CLASSIC this one- could have been given to any of their female stock and been just as good (well, lets not talk about Mandy Smith, but you get my DRIFT) and to be fair Kylie is secondary to the quality of the song itself. But what a CORKING pop song this is- three minutes of complete pop fluff, with every cliche in the pop book intact !

The video, however, is fucking horrific. She looks shit, the set is both cheap AND shit and the special effects laughable. The only Kylie video to feature a mix/edit different to the single release though...fascinating fact #2....
one of my absolute faves and I'm always happy to see it done live... the vid is pure trash but the vibe of the song is enough I can look past it

Another song lost from the deConstruction era, this originally surfaced on the "Intimate and Live" cd in, obviously, live format and also on the "Other Sides" EP promo in Australia. The fact it never saw "proper" light of day until the release of Hits+ is a crime in itself. Its nine minutes of beauty...shimmering backdrop with a whispy vocal over the top, I can see that its length might put it out of contention for the album but really, they couldn't trim it down- its perfect as it is. I can really sink into this song, place myself in the middle of it, in a way not that possible with much of her work. Love the African chanting that squiggles its way across the landscape too. Try it- its very different to anything she's done before or since, but it really is wonderful.

While not my fave Kylie track it is my fave vocally.. her voice is lush and heartbreaking. It's a simple song on the surface but is so layered with different elements it just sucks you in. And while it is a long song... it doesn't feel like it because it's so easy to get into. Feel like I'm losing time indeed

One thing you can't fault Kylie for is not taking enough risks. Ok, so it only ended up as the bside of "Confide In Me" but this little piece of wonderment is possibly, imo, her best ever vocal performance- she sounds so lost, so fragile, so needy on this, a cover of a Prefab Sprout song, I believe. Essentially just her and a piano, and at just over 2 minutes long, it would have never fit on the "Kylie Minogue" album, but its not through lack of quality. Another heartbreaker through the sheer emotion of her voice, the whispered "....I will know" it ends on speaks a million words, leaving her a lost little girl desperate for the love of a man she knows deep down doesn't have any for her.

    *sheds tear*

It often makes me do that...
    *cries*

always gets played when I'm feeling down... a good cry never hurt anyone

Ooooh PURE aural sex this one. From a pretty nice if bog-standard house twinkler came this remix, re-recorded especially for its single release. Kylie grunts and groans her way through without singing a single note until the very last couple of lines (though she does warble some backing vocals) and still managing to sound affecting and sexy throughout- something few singers can manage with their spoken voice (though Madge is the queen of it, of course..). "Where Is The Feeling" is like a four minute orgasm. I'm a big fan of this style of languid, "half arsed" (as everpres put it) vocalising and this is a wonderful example of it. She sounds so goddamned sexy- all the little whispers and the "mmm's...." and "aah's". Fucking FABULOUS. Absolutely uncommercial though- not sure it should have ever been a single.

The video is equally grand- shot in what looks like freezing cold water and as simple as can be she looks fantastic and the eerie sinister nature of it only adds to the power of the song....
another fave but I do prefer the Soundtrack Mix.. all 13 or so minutes of it

    10. Some Kind Of Bliss
UK #20something (cant be arsed to look it up) (1997), From the album "Impossible Princess" (1997)

Cause every day is all there is....

Ah, the song that marked the beginning of her downfall really. 1997. The death toll of Britpop were beginning to ring and Kylie was at a low ebb commercially. Time for a, ahem, re-invention then. And thus "IndieKylie" was born. If you have "Impossible Princess", you'll know that that moniker is somewhat misleading- its a dance album at the end of the day- but this track is anything but. Written with the Manic Street Preachers, it is one of their songs through and through- they didn't so much as write it for Kylie, they just let her use their blueprint. Its such a shame it did so badly (her only UK single to date to miss the top 20) as its an absolute corker of a tune. Chunky guitars, screeching violins and one of her best vocal performances. On the way home from work yesterday, it was one of those perfect early autumn days- sun shining, hot enough to have the windows down and I had this blaring out doing 80 down the motorway- fucking glorious. A real singalong. You just have to listen to the outro (Kylie simply singing "Every day..." over again) to hear how much her voice had improved.

The video for this was wonderful too- gorgeous red headed Kylie goes on thieving rampage with Dexter Fletcher from Press Gang (*swoon*). Glorious song, glorious visuals, a magical comeback and one of life's great mysteries as to why it failed so badly...

I really like Some Kind Of Bliss...I was quite suprised how much it grew on me, cos it wasn't the type of music I liked at that time

I would probably be in my top 30/40...

She really DOES look amazing in that one, absolutely gorgeous. And I never knew that was Dexter Fletcher...I knew he looked familiar but I always thought he was some Aussie soap actor whose name I couldn't remember

And yes, it's a GREAT song to sing along to. In my top 20 this one...

I love the song. It's still constantly derided by certain factions of Kylie fans and I'm not sure if that's because of what it did (or didn't do) for Kylie or because it's just the norm to have that opinion. It's such a simple joyous song, very much in the vein of her earlier work that it doesn't really make sense why people didn't take to it. Ignorance perhaps?

Lolly, I really like the fact that her voice struggles to keep pace with the instrumentation. She belts the lyrics out but they still come across as somewhat fragile and I love that.

Anyway, I think the other Manics track (I Don't Need Anyone) is just as good.

Just dug up an interview with James Dean Bradfield who mentioned how he was very much influenced by Tamla Motown tracks when writing with Kylie and how he always imagined her singing songs like that.

    They're not "indie" at all.

Anyway he said he loved her voice and feels guilty about letting her down in some way (in light of the commercial failure).

There's one track which I'm certain won't be included in this countdown but which absolutely deserves to be mentioned and that's Ocean Blue.

It's such a refreshing song and very different to anything she has done before. I'm thinking that it's not a popular choice though....

It reminds me, in small part, of the Verve's Lucky Man.

It's probably because of the chord changes that I think that.
