Saw this in the Metro and had to google it... one of the main 60s monstrosities that they're removing to put up new spangly skyscrapers in the city. What a NOVEL way of demolishing a building...
This unusual site is stopping Londoners in their tracks. The old 1960s P&O tower in Leadenhall street is being demolished from the ground up to make way for Richard Rogers’ new 48 storey tower. Most towers are dismantled from the top down but due to the unusual design of 122 Leadenhall Street, this building is being dismantled from the ground up. The reason is that the floors are hung from a beam at the roof level which is supported by the core. Matthew White, British Land’s project director told the London Evening Standard that “The 15 storey building, constructed in 1965, was one of only four in London to have been constructed in this way – and the first to be demolished. Eventually the beam will be deconstructed at roof level leaving the core, which will be demolished from the top down.”

One more for tonight... the new East London line by 2010. It's amazing how much tunnel and track can be built in a few years... anyway. The current line only runs from Whitechapel to New Cross. That's QUITE the extension... doesn't really link up directly with the Olympic site, which is what I thought it was for. Anyway, brings much needed access to the SOUTH EAST

And it's well overdue having a tube link at Clapham Junction, though how they'll cope with extra traffic is beyond me. It's already the busiest train station in Europe

i'm all for skyscrapers as long as they are well thought out and planned for. i think the gherkin is pretty and fits perfectly into the city. i love the look of that london bridge tower and think it will look great on the river. what i don't like is that frikkin walkie talkie tower - doesn't ANYBODY find that hideous?

During the extension, the East London line will be removed from the Underground network and will join the Overground network.
well I know that - but it's still part of the tube 'network'
There are already more stations overground on the tube than underground anyway. The DLR alone is almost entirely ABOVE ground level....
Who cares if it is overground or underground as long as it gets you there FAST

Modern buildings and historical ones can look GREAT next to each other. The problem London has had is that a lot of the modern ones (particularly 60s & 70s) have just been plain ugly. It's the fact that they are ugly that is the problem, not the fact that they are 'modern'.
With the right architects and innovative building, there's absolutely no reason why the London skyline shouldn't look sensational.

I think I've probably only seen it before from the train, which doesn't show very much. By coach however you get to see some REAL GRIM BITS. There were times I SCARED and was protected by a great big BUS.
They've got a LOT of work to do before 2012.
Well everything around Stratford, Hackney, Whitnechapel, Arsenal and that area will be gutted. The East London line will ensure plenty of property development and investment across SE London, areas such as Lewisham and New Cross which really need it.
Not sure about the likes of West Ham and Bow though - areas which are most severely in need of being wiped out and started again. It's just FORGOTTEN LAND
I guess government has always felt that if people have no need to go there if they don't live there, there's no point worrying about it...
As this thread covered modern architecture, just thought I'd mention for anyone interested that The Guardian is giving away posters and factsheet type things over the next two weeks on the greatest modern buildings. It was the Empire State today, and it's the Guggenheim Bilbao on Monday. The Gherkin is also included at some point.

And speaking of the Guggenheim in Bilbao, have any Londoners been to the Tate Modern recently? Louise Bourgeois’s 'Maman' sculpture is there now (outside, I think). It was at the Guggenheim when I was there a few years ago. It's a bit freaky.
