Thats two top draw tactics RPG games on the PSP in one month. Jeanne D'Arc looks visually nicer in game though.

Both have LOVELY cut scenes though. Manga stylee.

I've never played a FF Tactics game. How do they work?

The world map is made up of 'locations' the story is driven by visiting these locations and you enter them. Then you get a 3d screen (made from squares) and you battle on them. You have a turn and then the CPU has a turn. Basically you lay out some troops, you get a move and an action per unit per turn.

I do love the 'tactics' of them. Having your white magic users support your front line people. Getting archers up high to rain down arrows. Having tanks to absorb the brunt of damage from the opposition.

It doesn't sound thrilling but plays out much better in reality. Some of the fights can be quite epic. I've had a mammoth 40 minute one on Jeanne D'Arc. Loved all of it. Had moments where I thought it was going to all fall apart. Got back on top, then enemy reinforcements appear, all looks lost, a master stroke on a turn completely flips it over. Grand!

Considering its just world map and these locations, a story can still be told quite well. Even Tactics Advance managed to basically tell a story. These iterations are meant to be light years ahead.

    Official Trailer apparently:

I'm not sure if anyone will care, but if you have custom firmware on your PSP you can now get a hack that sorts out the slowdown issues with this game I'll be trying it tonight, because I seriously couldn't get further than the first couple of battles it annoyed me so much
