Oh I love it. Doesn't all work but very clever re-imagining. AND it gave the Cardigans an international career (if something of an albatross...)
This was QUITE the big hit if I recall. At least in my school.

And Miriam Margolyes of course.

Its alright...but I find it a bit HARD GOING
But then that's more SHAKY HIMSELF than the film
It's been too long, it's been too long...
Fairly TEDIOUS
And oh...
Oh HOW MANY YEARS
Is it NOW Maurice?
I think this movie is seriously underrated by critics (though it`s loved by English teachers obviously). Great cinematography, design and of course soundtrack. I think the first album to this might be the best OST ever.
It was released the year after our class did R&J at school, so we understood and recognised all the dialogue really well. I'm glad it went that way, instead of the younger people now probably having seen this as their first introduction to the play.
Now I saw the movie before I read the play - the use of language was such a shock but totally fascinating at the same time. I never had read anything by Shakespeare before that though I knew the story of R & J
The editing on this film is quite insane. In a good way. (I THINK...)
I gave it an 8. I can't stand Clare Danes and it would've been better with Natalie Portman or Kate Winslet (both screen tested for it) but it was a riot and fiercely hetero Mercutio stole every scene (until bloody Tybalt went and SHANKED him).

Natalie Portman had been chosen for the role of Juliet, but after production began, it was felt that the footage looked like DiCaprio was "molesting" her.
Eventually, Luhrmann agreed that the age difference between the two actors was too great. Filming was halted to find another actress for the part.

Boring? Really? The pace is so breakneck there isn't even a chance to get bored!

If Portman had been chosen that would've been more faithful to the play since Juliet is so young (thirteen?) that her father asks Paris to hold off two years before marrying her. Danes looked about twenty five in this film.

I can see why it wouldn't be to everyone's tastes but BORING? It's one of the most celebrated stories of ALL TIME!
I suppose you had to be 15/16 at the time to TRULY appreciate it.
I've not seen it in an AGE, but i remember really loving it. Great visuals, great soundtrack, mostly great perfs (IMO), and i can't think of a better way to adapt something like this. And i do like the play, though i always get fucked off with the whole magic potion bullshit at the end. YOU LET YOURSELF DOWN, SHAKESPEARE.
Also does everyone know about the new Julian Fellowes adapted (?!) film version starring dishy Doug Booth and her out of True Grit? I'll keep an OPEN MIND, though i'm not so sure right now.
Oh and i can't seem to find it on youtube right now (it's FULL of DRAMA STUDENTS delivering their own LESSER VERSIONS), but the opening speech via the newsreader is probably one of my favourite film openings EVER.

Is Doug Booth doing exclusively worth historical adaptations now then? I'm not complaining

Also starring Christian Cooke as Mercutio no less!![]()

Ooh, i didn't know that. I am a GREAT FAN of his ACTING TALENT
Imdb says that noted fucker of costars old enough to be her son Lesl*y M@nville is playing the nurse as well. She'll be in her element with those boys.
Miriam Margolyes will forever own that role though.

It's ALRIGHT but not quite the world beater it seemed at the time. I think Leo, as with everything he does, is pretty off putting. They should have given him the boot rather than Natalie Portman.
Having said that, the updated Venice Beach setting really wouldn't work with a 13 year old in the role, no matter what the historical accuracy might me. Clearly marrying your kids off early before they carked it in their thirties was a pretty good idea back in the DAY.
I really rather fancied Dash Mihok in this. Shame he didn't do much else, bar a bit of a turn in the amazing The Thin Red Line and something to do with Alanis Morissette.
Leo is an incredible actor! One of the best of his generation!!
Dash Mihok!? Oh no... Benvolio was really not hot.
Oh I'm so ashamed for my posts in this thread. How could I EVER have hated Clare Danes? Since falling in love with her on Homeland I've totally u-turned. I watched this again last night and she definitely does the role justice.
