    Steps Countdown

I'm thinking about doing a Steps Top 30 / Top 25. Is anyone remotely interested before I start?

I'd be interested in a steps top 30, but dead against a top 25. For personal reasons.

OK. I will do it soon. It will take some SERIOUS consideration. Steps are possibly a bigger obsession of mine than Kylie and Eurovision. Well, they were in their day anyway.

Yes, I know. In my defense, I was 16 when Last Thing On My Mind was released, was just in the process of coming out, and they were the acceptable face of gay culture at the time. It was inevitable I'd end up a fan. And, let's be honest, they released some of the best pop songs ever recorded.

Moonbaby, there will indeed be rarities and b sides. IN FACT, a rarity will be vying for No. 1 spot.

Faced between a choice between Steps, Tony and Simon from Eastenders and Elton John, I know who I'd choose.

I was 11 too...I liked them, I was quite excited by the "5,6,7,8" chart run and later I bought "Last Thing On My Mind". Ironically, considering it was what really put them in the big league, I went RIGHT off them with the release of "Heartbeat/Tragedy" both of which I thought were turdlike. From then on I ´judged them only on a single-by-single basis

I actually own Heartbeat/Tragedy on cassette single because I think Heartbeat is rather lovely. Tragedy has always been atrocious.

I probably like (to varying degrees) about eight of their songs, at the most.

OK then... The Top 30 is on its way!

Here's the 5 songs that just missed out on making the final cut...

    31. Since You Took Your Love Away (Steptacular)

    32. Baby Don’t Dance (Gold)

    33. This Heart Will Love Again (Step One)

    34. Only In My Dreams (Gold)

    35. I Surrender (Steptacular)

    Indeed it was.

It was SO derivative of their earlier work, but minus half the joy. It's still an 8/10 for me though. I loved A LOT of their songs, so 34's not that bad really.

I absolutely refute that. Steps' success was so accidental. S Club were the acceptable face of corporate kiddie fleecing pop.

    30.

'Words Are Not Enough' (Single from 'Gold')

    No. 5 (Singles Chart)

So, the chart begins at the very end of their career. The last ever Steps single felt like a bit of a washout at the time, but was actually a really rather lovely song particularly in its live arrangement. This performance is the fully live CDUK performance that they somehow nailed vocally. Lisa's harmonies are really pretty and it was this performance that really sold the song to me after being initially unimpressed at the recorded version. It's also the only Steps record I ever promoted as they split up just as I joined the promotions company! Damn them!

    Newsflash: Steps are no BAND

And given the amount of horrific covers Steps have inflicted upon the world, I don't think it was wrong for me to assume they'd do it again.

And Suomi - the original Sunscreem version of Love U More is far better well, admittedly I haven't even heard their version but there's no way it would be.

Steps are better than S Club. But then who ISN'T. I don't even hate them, I just found that gay culture comment hysterical. And Steps were ruthlessly geared toward profit - it's Pete Waterman for chrissakes. They're more calculated than HITLER
