'Self Control' is far too low!

In fact that is banning material if ever I saw it!

I quite liked 'Spanish Eddie' at the time. I had the single, but I'm buggered if I can find it now.

You know "Self Control" is an 11/10 moment, and it really was my first favorite Branigan tune, but like I said, the top five is VERY, VERY STRONG

I just want to add my satisfaction with this countdown and the fact that Solitaire would be in my top 5 or so too

Do you know "Helpless (You Took My Love)", that's another fabulous Laura clone

shocked I fight the night, to be alone has never frightened me...

    1. "Whatever I Do" (1987)
    Album: Touch

    I stand alone
    Another victim of your fantasies
    I face the world
    I'm searching for my destiny
Oh, who are you to tie me down?
When you were not always around
Who are you when I can get you out of my life?

OH MY GOD. This is fucking *tremendous*, not only is it one of the most uplifting songs (in my opinion), it's MY COMEBACK SONG....I think of it as my Rocky theme. It's amazing from beginning to end, those powerful verses and that inspiring chorus, it's a TRAGEDY that this was never released (at least Laura's version).

It's a SAW production and I guess that's more noticeable in "Whatever I Do" rather than "Shattered Glass" (the other SAW song on Touch). You can tell in this song that they tinkered with her vocals a bit more, possibly against her consent, as she didn't want the processed vocals and messed around production that SAW often does. The song was sort of recorded as a fluke, because Laura wanted to do another song with SAW after "Shattered Glass" and she browsed through their catalog and decided she loved Hazel Dean's "Whatever I Do" and the rest is history. She apparently recorded it in no more than two takes, now that's a pro.

Anyway it turned out marvelously, and is definitely not one of her well known tracks, but is certainly my favorite! I hope "Whatever I Do" is proud as it was a big challenge to rank the top 6 or so. It's truly PERFECT from start to finish, go ahead and give it a proper listen!

And as I said before, if there are any songs on the countdown or Laura songs in general that you would like just say the word!

Ok my youtube sound is working again and I searched for Hazell's version. It's certainly VERY GOOD, but her vocals and the rhythm come off much more irritable and nauseating...Laura's vocals are better and the song itself is much more easy to appreciate in her form.

Now this one is alright, after the 'you took my love' bits I subconsciously said 'you take my self control' and of chorus the oh-ooo-ohhh's are similar to Laura's in "Self Control". It's quite remarkable that for someone who had such limited chart success and underrated singles she made a pretty decent impact on the 80s pop scene it seems.

I can see why you love Laura's version of Whatever I Do (Wherever I Go) if it's the only one you know, but for me Hazell's version is such a classic that Laura's is just another cover version (that I hadn't been aware of til now), sorry
Still a very good cover version though.

Ok thanks to everyone that contributed to the thread - I really am appreciative as I didn't know whether this go down well at all, because she isn't exactly in the ranks of Kylie, Madonna, or Britney at Moopy.

OH and of course the traditional 'HINT' at the next inevitable POP! countdown.

Let's just say the next countdown will come in the next few weeks ONE WAY OR ANOTHER....I just hope all these countdowns aren't BACKFIRED at me.

Well thank YOU for continuing to make great music posts/threads, you've really helped revive this place, which was rewarded with your very deserving climb in Mooprate.

Hmm subtle hints as to the next countdown. I'd rather DRINK BLEACH than miss that one!

I'm still not sure how big of a countdown it should be. I was able to list 65 songs I liked by them, but I think I'll end up making it a top 40 or something, the drama.

I was DREAMING of that countdown, it fills me with RAPTURE. You could even say I'm TOUCHED

Did you do a Vadge countdown? Everyone that does lists is required by law to do those! Maybe you could do a Stacey Q one or something too.

I could do a Vadge countdown, but I'm not properly LOONED-UP for one at the moment...I need some sort of LOON REVELATION to instigate a countdown. Maybe for my upcoming tenth countdown (I just finished #7) I can do Madge, but we'll see...it's a lot to get into as she has such a big catalog, it was hard enough to compile a Kylie countdown, but one of these days I might.

Has anyone heard the original version of "Self Control?" I didn't know this but her version was a cover version of some Italian singer Raf.

I have to say, I think I like the original better, it's a bit more 80s disco sounding then her version.

Also, as a side note, Laura Brannigan worked as a waitress at a steakhouse near where I grew up.

No, she must have worked there in the very late 70s or something and I'd only been the place maybe once or twice in the mid 80s when she already had a career.

Again much obliged, POP! Sadly precious few of your picks on the GH I have (the 1995 one, which seems to be the only one currently in print easily obtained from this part of the world).

Ooh good read Pop! Although not including Solitaire is borderline retarded. Amazing song. I love the spazztastic video too.

I'm listening to the Touch album now. What the FUCK is 'The Name Game' all about?

Most of POP!'s countdown selections appear on the budget Laura Branigan Platinum Collection CD from a couple of years ago, if anyone wants a cheap investment. It's about £3 on Amazon.

    3. Lucky One
    4. Solitaire
    5. Power Of Love
    6. How Am I Supposed To Live Without You
    7. Ti Amo
    8. I Found Someone
    9. Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow
    10. Spanish Eddie
    11. All Night With Me
    12. Lovin' You Baby
    13. Shattered Glass
    14. Never In A Million Years
    15. Moonlight On Water
    16. Satisfaction
    17. If You Loved Me
    18. Silent Partners

I've been listening to 'Touch' a lot thanks to this countdown. It really is a very strong 80s MOR-pop album if you like that sort of thing (Which of course i DO).

I can definitely see the Belinda Carlisle comparisons.

Yeah, it's an incredibly strong album for just one that seemed to pass by as some throwaway 80s pop album.
