Well, it's obviously meant to be a light-hearted statement that songs didn't used to be written by a roundtable committee of people with specific commercial objectives in mind, and that the musical landscape used to be the better for that. Something I personally agree with, for the most part. Of course there's lots of exceptions, and I don't think the comparison was intended as anything more than a bit of a joke.
