Banshee's been cast too - I don't suppose a FANTARD can hope that I few years down the line that him and Emma are in charge of the next generation of mutants?

I haven't been able to watch Hoult in anything since his horrific turn in Skins. Is he a capable actor? Is there any chance that Beast can be hit by a bus in the end?

Emma Frost is actually going to be Betty -

January Jones has signed up to star in X-Men: First Class, it has been revealed.

According to Deadline, the Mad Men actress is to play Emma Frost, a telepathic mutant also known as the White Queen, whose allegiances continually shift throughout the X-Men comic book series.

Alice Eve and Rosamund Pike were previously linked to the role, but Jones has apparently agreed to start shooting as soon as the fourth season of Mad Men wraps up in September.

Director Matthew Vaughn also announced that Zoe Kravitz has been cast as Angel, Bill Milner will play a young Magneto, and Morgan Lily is to portray the Young Raven.

They join James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Caleb Landry Jones, Nicholas Hoult, Lucas Till, Edi Gathegi, Jason Flemyng Rose Byrne, Oliver Platt, Kevin Bacon and Jennifer Lawrence in the final cast list for the summer 2011 film.

I missed the Rose Byrne and Kevin Bacon news. The former is going to be Professor X's lady friend (Moira MacTaggert, i hope she's got a comedy scots accent) and Bacon is the i think as yet unnamed villain. AMAZING CAST

I can totally see her doing an amazing Emma, and even though I had decided not to care for this it's looking rather good.

A mutant, Shaw possesses the ability to absorb kinetic energy and transform it into raw strength. He is the leader of the New York branch of the Hellfire Club, an exclusive secret society bent on world domination, although to the public, he is a legitimate businessman and ordinary human. He once funded the mutant-hunting Sentinel program to keep it under his thumb.

The casting is so fucking bizarre. DARWIN? ANGEL SALVATORE?

I had to stop myself from posting utter bile yesterday at the inclusion of Azazel. He was a character introduced at the COMPLETE NADIR of the franchise written by Chuck Austen, the biggest hack on the planet. He was determined to make Nightcrawler look like a cunt, firstly by trying to get him to be elected POPE by a crazed group of religious extremists led by a disguised nun, who had been raped or something. She used EXPLODING COMMUNION WAFERS as a weapon. It's a total mindfuck and should possibly be the plot to Sister Act 3.

His next trick was to introduce Kurt's dad, Azazel. A lame Satan analogue who would TELEPORT TO EARTH from his demon lair to impregnate unsuspecting women so he could have a child with the power to TELEPORT HIM TO EARTH. THIS WAS AN ACTUAL STORYLINE.

There was admittedly a great subplot where Angel fucked an underage girl 10 feet in the air above her horrified mother in his take on Romeo & Juliet.

How on earth did I miss that I must look through my pdf's for that storyline. I skipped all the early 2000 - 2004 Uncanny on the count of them being shit.

I'm sure most of these characters will only appear for a second...I'm crossing my fingers for a Stacey X appearance.

EDIT: I just noticed that Sarah Harding auditioned, so I guess that's Stacey X in the bag

I had to just consult wikipedia. Even I had forgotten some of these treats:

    X-Men and Avengers work

In 2002, Austen took over Uncanny X-Men beginning with #410-415, during which he introduced the character of Annie Ghazikhanian, who falls in love with comatose X-Man Havok. Comics Bulletin gave Austen 3.5 out of 5 stars: while criticising a certain tendency for melodramatics, he was lauded for his "spot-on" characterizations of Northstar and Professor X.[7] Austen's follow-up arc, "Dominant Species", ran from #416-420, in introduced a group of mutant werewolves who eat humans who do not accept mutant rights.

Austen continued in 2003 with three short two-part arcs named "Rules of Engagement", "Holy War" and "Sacred Vows" (Uncanny X-Men #421–427). Comics Bulletin was appreciative of Rules of Engagement while acknowledging that the Canadian superhero team Alpha Flight behaved strangely nationalistic.[8] "Holy War" featured religious zealots Church of Humanity who crucify several junior X-Men and abduct demonic-looking X-Man Nightcrawler. They want to install him pope of the Catholic Church to discredit this religion. In "Sacred Vows", Austen established that X-Man Polaris is the daughter of archvillain Magneto. That drives her over the edge, makes her betray her fiancé Havok with a male stripper, while Havok betrays her with nurse Annie Ghazikhanian. Austen admitted misplotting Polaris.[9] In addition, a stand-alone story featured the teenage X-Girls Jubilee and Husk visiting a grave: instead of mourning, they exchange sex fantasies. In the next story arc, "Draco". (Uncanny X-Men #428–434), Nightcrawler is revealed to be the son of Azazel, a powerful demon, who is later revealed as Satan himself. Thefourthrail.com called the story pacing "unbelievably tedious" and pointed out that Austen's revelation lacked power, because Azazel was painted as Satan from literally the prologue of the story on.[10] Austen himself admitted that he misplotted the story.[11]

The next arc, 2004's "She Lies With Angels" (Uncanny X-Men #437–441), was a retelling of the classic Romeo and Juliet story using Josh Guthrie as the male and a girl called Julia Cabot, daughter of a family full of anti-mutant racists, as the female counterpart.

By then, Austen's X-Men work was widely criticized. Thefourthrail.com strongly rebuked him for "horror-filled destruction of characters and inane plotting" that "defined" his work on Uncanny X-Men.[12]

In 2004, Austen also wrote Avengers from #77-84. His first arc introduced a new Captain Britain (since renamed Lionheart). The second Captain Britain was a single mother thrust into the realm of super-heroes.[13] The second arc, which saw Austen writing former Avengers USAgent and Namor, the Sub-Mariner attempting to liberate a middle eastern country from its corrupt leadership, served as launching pad for the short-lived 2004 Invaders series.[14][15][16]

The writing stints during Avengers and X-Men affected Austen's reputation among comic book fans. Detractors saw him as a "misogynist", who "hate[s] women" and "obsessed with sex". In response, Austen pointed out he was married with children, was raised by a single mother he looked up to and strongly denied misogynist sentiment.

I'm SURE there was also a plot where MUTANT PROSTITUTE Stacy-X was having unprotected sex with her clients because mutants can't get AIDS.

This sounds SO shit so far.

What happened to all the known mutants everyone KNOWS and loves? Where is Dazzler? Where is Warpath? Hell, even I could cope with the odd FORGE/Longshot/Bishop appearance...

Azazel? Stacy X? Either I grown up or the comics really went to the dogs!

Here's a bit of explanation about the cast included and some info about the movie...
Hey folks, Harry here with a great update on X-MEN: FIRST CLASS that just came from Producer: Bryan Singer - who tells me he's been working on X-MEN: FIRST CLASS for over a year now and with the looming August 31st, filming date approaching - he wanted to clarify some of what it is they're doing.

First off - the film takes place in the 1960's. John F Kennedy is the President of the United States. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X are on TV doing marches. There is a spirit of a hopeful future that was prevalent in that time. We will see how Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr met - and how they dreamt of a future with Mutant & Human kind. They're going to be in their late twenties. Xavier - as played by James McAvoy will not be in his wheelchair to begin the film - but we will see how he wound up in a wheelchair. I asked if McAvoy would have a nice shiny chrome dome - and folks. We're going to see Professor X when he still had hair. We'll see McAvoy and Fassbender's Magneto formulate what it is they are attempting by creating the X-MEN.

Now Bryan wanted us to know this is not the conventional FIRST CLASS comic - but rather a new beginning for X-MEN. Set in the 60s - Vaughn is technologically inspired by JAMES BOND's tech of the time. The costumes will be far more comic bookish than we've seen before - and while Scott and Jean aren't here - Cyclops' brother Alex Summers aka Havoc will be, as played by Lucas Till.

With January Jones and Kevin Bacon playing Emma Frost and Sebastian Shaw - we will be getting the HELLFIRE CLUB. I commented that the HELLFIRE CLUB has always felt like something that it would be wrong to modernize, as it felt as though it were something specific to the swinging Hefner era of the 60s... and Bryan said that's exactly why they're making use of the HELLFIRE CLUB... the dress and the costumes associated with that glorious period of the X-MEN... belong in the 60s. I asked if Kevin Bacon would be sporting that little ponytail with the ribbon - Bryan laughed and said, "We'll see".

In regards to the cast, Bryan was especially excited to land Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy/Beast. Nicholas was set for FURY ROAD, but their start date shifted which opened up his availability for FIRST CLASS. Also - Rose Byrne is playing Moira MacTaggert, I liked her in KNOWING. And I think she's fairly perfect for Moira. The cast list over on IMDB is correct (with the exception of the Rosamund Pike rumor).

Looks like filming will begin with Xavier at Oxford University in the 60s. And Bryan is excited that the film is going to have a much more international feel than the prior X-MEN movies. They'll be shooting in England & the United States - and they'll be representing other locales around the globe as well, but would only tell me that Russia (aka The Soviet Union... CCCP) will be amongst them. He doesn't want to show all the cards just yet. But the International flavor will give the film a more James Bond vibe... I get the idea that this is going to be something quite special.

How can I say that based on a quick conversation with Bryan? Well... folks, this is the first time that we're going to get a silver age MARVEL story. That's incredibly exciting to me. Hearing Bryan actually saying that the costumes will be far more reflective of what we saw in the comics - well that is exciting. But more than that... I just can't wait to see young vital versions of Xavier and Magneto played by excellent actors in their prime.

But more so... This is the time for Matthew Vaughn to shine. I loved KICK ASS, but it didn't have the namebrand of X-MEN or the scope that those stories have. Here, everything that Vaughn has can be put on display. Having Vaughn work in a James Bond-esque period - that was the period that the X-MEN first came to life. There's potential for something amazing.

There are characters that we're not being told about though. Bryan said so. And we can all speculate as to who they are. We know we're going to have Darwin, Young Raven Darkholme, Banshee, Havok, lil Mystique, Azazel, Emma Frost, Beast, Xavier, Magneto and a female Angel. So... who's missing? Well - I'm kinda hoping for Donald Pierce and Harry Leland - myself. How about you?

Oh, I just remembered, I asked Singer when we can expect our first look at some of the costumes and the look they're going for and he told me to expect something in about a month, if not sooner. So seems like we'll begin to have a clue pretty soon.

I fucking LOVE the Hellfire Club. I wouldn't really have Kevin Bacon down as the Shaw-type but he will be fabulous.

It is sort of ridiculous that they don't have Jean, Scott and Ororo as the originals but the continuity is fucked anyway.

AZAZEL BETTER ONLY BE A FUCKING CAMEO. He can nonce up the young Mystique or something.

I really am VERY VERY EXCITED about this you know.

X-Men + Matthew Vaughn + Jonathan Ross's wife + Bryan Singer back in the fold + 1960s setting + 1960s London/Oxford + the mad ass storylines monsta has mentioned + Fassbender + Betty Draper + Rose Byrne = OMG AMAZING

The word 'dark' hasn't been used to describe it yet, either. RESULT

Lord, Define Life was right -

Sarah Harding has revealed that she narrowly missed out on the part of Emma Frost in X-Men: First Class.

The Girls Aloud singer, whose first main film role came in 2009's St Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold, said that producers ultimately favoured January Jones for the upcoming Matthew Vaughn picture.

She told OK: "I got called back three times for X-Men but I missed out on the part to January Jones, which was fine - she's a more established actress - but I was pleased to have got that far down the line."

Harding also said that she has received offers for a number of movie roles but that she is still waiting for the right script to come along.

"I'm getting quite a few offers but I'm being quite picky," she added. "I thought Uma Thurman was great in Kill Bill - I'd love a kick ass role!"

    omg omg omg

I don't think i have EVER been this excited about a superhero film. I certainly can't remember one with such exquisite ingredients.

The main question i have right now though is just WHAT has happened to James McAvoy's face? When i first saw the big group shot i wondered why he wasn't in it, and i genuinely had to scan the caption beneath in order to see who the little guy on the furthest right was.

To be far, Phoenix, that's EXACTLY what it made me mindful of

In fact, even more CHILLINGLY, it has more than hint of the Ralph 'n' Uma Avengers film about it... I stil haven't quite got over the yawning chasm of a gap between the amazingness of the trailer and promo shots for that film and the utter tripe that was up on the screen. Back in the old pre-internet days, I had no idea it was going to be as bad as it was. It didn't even make any sense. I guess the fact it wasn't screened for critics should have been an almighty warning sign...

I think the DUD third X Men movie and the ÜBER-DUD Wolverine movie have made me very sceptical about this indeed. I predict crapness I'm afraid.

I do hope dear old January is going to do a bit more than that DEAD BEHIND THE EYES thing that passes for her performances in Mad Men

I'll believe it when I see it. JJ looks as vacuous as ever in those shots and the costumes look COMEDY BAD.

I don't know anything about the X Men apart from the 3 films but it's a groovy concept, so they should be able to make something halfway decent out of it.

These are the TWO WORST THINGS i have read so far today, and i've just been on MAIL ONLINE, and have also had a flick through my copy of Moir Moir Moir: A Collection of Jan's Finest Columns... So Far

    1. The last two X films have NOTHING in common with this, AND are probably why the whole franchise is being reset in such a way. AND Bryan Singer from the first two films is back overseeing this, AND it has a cast, director, and screenwriter who have barely put a single foot wrong between them. It could still be crap but the signs are surely not there so turn that frown upside down RIGHT NOW.

    2. Have you gotten very far with Mad Men? Because i think January is proper great. Yeah she plays a dead eyed trophy wife type character, but i think she does it perfectly and adds such depth to Betty, and over the years i think she's managed to create one of the most realistic and unique characters on tv in an AGE. When the mask slips and she goes mental it's TOP ACTING, and when she becomes a bit less savoury in later seasons she had me shouting at the screen, which i think is a testament to JJ. I don't think i've seen her in anything else of note though.

    P.S.
