No "Dress You Up"?!![]()
I thought given that Celebration is just around the corner, that I would officially rank all of her songs (mainly based on how much I've listened to them). And for anyone even remotely interested I shall post it here. As I'm sure some have noticed, my taste is more than a little strange.
To begin with heres 10 songs that came EVER SO CLOSE, but didnt make the grade. (Not in order)
He's A Man
Dress You Up
Has To Be
Cyber-Raga
Mother And Father
Beautiful Stranger
Can't Stop
Bad Girl
Fighting Spirit
I Want You
Breakdown by decade is:
80's: 21
90's: 14
00's: 15

'Sue, did the President call?' ... 'No' Last.fm
The fact there is no Dress You Up makes this Top 50 NULL AND VOID.
If it makes ANY difference, Dress ou Up was the one I had really had to think over.

Why is this not in the Madonna forum ?
And no DRESS YOU UP is indeed, a DISGRACE
Madonna Madonna Madonna Madonna Madonna Madonna
#50 - Time Stood Still
Well I shall begin my top 50 with a very underated gem from the soundtrack to 'The Next Best Thing', Time Stood Still. Surely one of her biggest missed single opportunites of recent times, not sure how others feel about this, but for me its a LOT better than American Pie.
#49 - Erotica
Kicking off the first of 4 Erotica tracks is the titular song, was in my top 20 for quite some time (based on the glorious CT version), but recently its settled into a comfortable position of #49. It's a bit obvious nowadays, but quite a BIG change of pace from typical Madonna at the time (bar a few singles).

Oh that was a mistake, I struggles to challenge the top 100 in reality.

"Time Stood Still" is quite clearly "The Look of Love" of the 2000s except it's not quite as amazing
I love Time Stood Still
It's like Like A Flower's little sister, only with more plastic surgery
FEARLESS FEMALE

Time Stood Still, The Look of Love and Like A Flower are all very good.
Erotica, however, should be in your top 30 at least.
The next 3 are a bit of a mixed bag, one from each decade of her career:
#48 - Impressive Instant
One of only 2 entires from 'Music', this is what Madonna wanted as 4th single, but of course WBR wanted 'Amazing' and then nothing got released. BUT anyway, my favourite song off the album for a long time, but in recent times its fallen a little behind one other, which is yet to come in the list.
#47 - Rain
The 5th single from 'Erotica' and one of my favourites. The lyrics are nice, as is her voice on it. Not at all keen on the single cover, but the video is STUNNING, a nice break of pace on the album.
#46 - Stay
The first entry from 'Like A Virgin' and the b side to the titular single no less. This is what album tracks SHOULD sound like, its not got HUGE amount of substance, but that doesnt matter when its ca ludicrously catchy and infectious as it is. Used to be higher, but a few Hard Candy and a few tracks I only 'got' recently have overtaken it.

3 great entries right there, superb
I always forgot just how good "Impressive Instant" really is until I listen to it.

2 80's tracks and 1 00's here:
#45 - Easy Ride
The best closing song to any of her 00's albums, so far. One of the best songs off its parent album too. A beautiful song, but a bit like Devil Wouldnt Recognize You on HC, it doesnt get the love it deserves because of the stigma from the album.
#44 - Who's That Girl?
A surprisingly low entry for what was one of my favourite Madonna songs not long back. However I think its best that I've grown out of this period in particular. Its a lovely, if nothingy, piece of spanish tinged pop. At its best no less. But this is far from my favourite off the album. The live version is really lovely though.
#43 - (Pray For) Spanish Eyes
Whatever you call it, the original name or the Remastered editions lengthened name, this song is WONDROUS. My first of 3 Like A Prayer songs, a non singles, never performed live, but definitely a personal favourite of mine from the very first time I listened to the album. I love how her voice isnt perfect on it too. I cant really explain why I like it as much as I do.
'Sue, did the President call?' ... 'No' Last.fm
Spanish Eyes is FANTASTIC, it's probably in my Madonna top ten. I LOVE IT.
I'm gonna pop this in the Madonna forum for the time being, I'll move it back once it's completed!
You have FOUR Hard Candy tracks placed above Erotica, Rain, Bad Girl, Who's That Girl, Time Stood Still and Spanish Eyes?
FUCKING HELL![]()
MOTIV8 VOCAL SLAM
Yeah, but in time I'm sure they'll slip back, but then again I am one of the few who ADORES HC, for what it is, not as a fantastic album, because it isnt, its nothing special, its just got some great tunes.
But then again my taste is on the far side of ridiulous
However the tags making reference to Incredible can FUCK OFF, it is a giant steaming heap of shit

CYBER-RAGA just missing the top 50? What a LOAD of...
Time to round of the #50-41:
#42 - Devil Wouldn't Recognize You
The live performance sealed its fate for me, EXCEPTIONAL. The bit in the middle with JT is a bit shit, and it could have worked so much better on a different album, but lyrically is quite wonderful. The piano on the live on also makes it even nicer. Anything from 'Hello Suckers' is really rather good anyway.
#41 - Love Don't Live Here Anymore
What a wondrous song, either in its original 1984 or updated 1995 remixed form. She looked lovely in the video, also her voice is quite lovely on it. A nice change of pace in the middle of Like A Virgin, I especially like the end note when she breathes in really loudly for some reason.

Some of the tags are hilarious I have to say, my top 10 is actually pretty obvious really and filled with many classics.

Anyway back onto the actual point of this thread: moving onto my top 40 now, beginning with the first entry from COADF:
#40 -Jump
The 4th single from the album and for me anyway, a lot better than Get Together. The video as well was a lot better than that of Get Together, whilst nothing amazing, it served its purpose nicely and isnt visually offensive. This was the 2nd song from COADF i really clicked with, the first being Hung Up of course. The extended album version on the single is wondrous, as is the live performance.
#39 - Why's It So Hard?
The 3rd Erotica track and this time an album track that, in its wondrous live form, was the B side to Oh Fathers 1995 re-release. I always really enjoyed the album version of this, but when I first watched the Girle Show was when I began to LOVE it, the bit ''Everybody now, bring you love, sing you love...'' bit is amazing.
'Sue, did the President call?' ... 'No' Last.fm
I removed the list of how it was broken down by album, because it was wrong. So i posted how its broken down by decade instead.

Jump shouldn't be the top 1,000,000,000 of ANYTHING. Except top of the WORST SHIT EVER PUT TO RECORD. Even WORSE than the Stargazers
Well I really like it, and although it has no real purpose in anything, its catchy and at end of the day thats what matters to me in this case.

Next up 2 80's tracks and a lovely 90's album track:
#38 - Lucky Star
The first of 3 entries from the first album, in its live form on the Confessions Tour mixed with Hung Up this was heavenly, and in fact made me like, what I had always seen as a rather boring song. However since then I've really grown to love it, more the full length version off the album, than the one on TIC, though.
#37 - Skin
The first of 4 entries from Ray Of Light, and the only non single. Always stood out to me as a beautiful track, from the very first listen, However I was more interested in the obvious songs to begin with, Frozen, Ray Of Light etc. But once I really took time to listen to it, it rapidly became one of my favourites off the album. I especially like the FABULOUS last minute or so. And William Orbit is a genius.
#36 - Live To Tell
What Madonna countdown would be complete without this, the song that showed she had more in her than just simple upbeat pop. The Confessions Tour version is frankly EPIC. Aside from that it is a beautiful song, her voice is stunning on it. I know some people will remark on it being so low, especially given what is still to come, as stunning as it is, it isnt perfection.
