mad Those shitty Comedy Roast things are coming to Channel 4

Am i the only one quite baffled by these? I've only seen clips, but basically a celebrity person sits there whilst comics slag them off in attempted funny ways? IS THAT IT? What's the point? It all sounds too stilted and effort-filled to be funny.

The UK version sounds even worse. From digispack -

Kielty roasts Osbourne on Channel 4 show

Patrick Kielty has poked fun at Sharon Osbourne's parenting skills on new Channel 4 show The Comedy Roast.

Kielty, along with Jimmy Carr, The X Factor's Louis Walsh, Gok Wak and Alan Carr, lead the tribute event to Osbourne, which will air next month.

Osbourne ended up chasing the Irish comic off the stage, shouting "I'll f***ing kill you!" after he joked about her daughter Aimee choosing not to appear on MTV fly-on-the-wall series The Osbournes.

"[Aimee is a] credit to the Filipino nannies who raised her... unlike the rest of the family," he told the audience.

"Aimee's been on TV once. Who could forget her appearance on The Jeremy Kyle Show when she desperately took a DNA test to try to prove you weren't her real mother."

He added: "She's the only child in Hollywood who's tried to adopt African parents."

Sharon Osbourne's Comedy Roast will air on April 8 at 10pm on Channel 4.
Other big stars being roasted include Chris Tarrant and Bruce Forsyth.

They are generally crap, but this Bea Arthur paying tribute to the literary talents of Pamela Anderson is one of my favourite things EVER.

Since when were Louis Walsh, Gok Wan and Patrick Kielty classed as comics?

I may watch in hope that Sharon DID catch Kielty to murder him onstage.

I like the Sean Locke joke about him beign surprised Jonathan Ross turned up in person to slag of Bruce Forsythe, given that he usually abuses elderly comedians over the telephone.

WHY would Sharon Osbourne agree to do it when she KNOWS she can't take a joke? Doesn't she sue everyone who even vaguely slags off her family?

The Pam one is quite good.

This could be OK, but if it descends into your usual bag of Brit TV nobodies (James Corden, Fearne Cotton etc) I'll give it a miss. Get Simon Amstell to do them all.

I know it isn't the UK one, but they had the William Shatner roast on tonight and I couldn't NOT watch it.

I didn't really know what to expect, but MY GOD, some of it was proper laugh out loud hilarious. I can only reitterate what others have said regarding Lisa Lampanelli, she made me laugh most.

I don't think the British will be as good at this. We're better at being snipey and bitchy behind people's backs but we're not as good at being upfront, which is the whole point of the show.

Simon Amstell is genuinely the only comedian I can think of that might be any good at it.

Did anybody watch the Babs Windsor one of these from last night? It had us HOWLING with laughter, i take my dislike of this odd format ALL BACK.

It's a definite must for any Eastenders fan, for sure.

You should see the bit at the end of the show, where Joan gets up and hits back at everyone - makes that look TAME!

"Frankly DARLING, you should be GLAD that man paid you ANY attention at all!"

Mine too! Along with the sketch from the EE cast, the In Memoriam section of people she'd fucked, and the Lesley Phillips beginning. And i'm sure i've completely forgotten about 20 proper lol moments. TOP TELLY

I also enjoyed spotting the few moments where you could tell a comic had actually offended Babs, and her hearty laughter didn't quite reach her eyes. She was generally a GREAT SPORT though.

Usually when this happened she'd follow up the stilted laughter with a telling comment such as "yeh, alright, that is funny".

It reminds me of when Barbra Streisand was on Jonathan Ross and he told some story to her (perhaps to do with dogs) and she said "oh, that's FUNNY" without moving her eyes or smiling.
