disco Diddy did Eurovision 2010 - The countdown

    OH MY GOD LOOKIE HERE

So I have been a little more pro-active in following ESC this year, culminating in my trip to Oslo to see the ... erm final dress rehearsal. But it was amazing and a great experience, I loved the BUZZ in Oslo.

I did watch the final on some big video screen ERECTED in the town centre of Sandviken, all the locals came out and watched and got pissed, and i got a free light-up Eurovision pen

So now it's time to draw a line under this year's experience and give you my top 39, so I can take my memories and move on .. maybe I will do 2007 afterwards.

I was going to give my opinions on Eurovision this year as I only saw the final TWO DAYS AGO. I thought that I was too late for my opinions to be relevant but, if you're doing it, I'll join in with this thread.

Well this should be good. 'In A Moment Like This' won't be #1 (as it rightfully should be), but I won't hold that against you.

Well also long as it's largely not filled with people SLAGGING off nonstop, I'll be happy and not have a Malta Meltdown.

#39-31 tonight I think, let's see how we go

Should be a curious read, if only to see where Belgium's vampire-fanged missing link between the Starsailor singer and Donald Duck's nephews will end up!

Hope for you this will get more feedback than my Erasure thread has had for the last four albums anyhow

    39. Aisha - What For? (Latvia )
Did not qualify, #17 in Semi Final 1

Oh lord, what a wreck . Latvia aren't exactly noted for their solid ESC entries recently, and this is no exception (FYI I loved Wolves of the Sea).

Less broken English, more mangled, with a pretty butchered performance that saw it come last in its semi-final. It's got some charm to it, but sadly I'm not appreciating it for much more than its laughable crapness. What for am I listening?

    Only Mr God knows why

Did not qualify, #16 in Semi Final 2

Nothing like some rather dated Eastern European RAWK to get a party started is there? You know, even the stuff I ranked worst this year wasn't THAT bad, I can at least sit through all 39 tracks without coming out in hives, which is more than I could say of some years.

It's a bit of a lumpy mixture of the aforementioned RAWK and some folky harmonies that comes out quite charming rather than disasterous. Everyone seemed very smily, and the harmony is quite nice.

    37. Malcolm Lincoln & Manpower 4 - Siren (Estonia )
Did not qualify, #14 in Semi Final 1

Hmm, a little iffy about this. I did NOT expect what I saw in the semi-final, the guy was a bit of an oddball and was sort of interesting to watch. I just wish the song wasn't such a DIRGE. There's a good song in there somewhere but the whole tone of the song is a bit hollow and strange.

Could have used some more vocals apart from that choir I think. Has some sort of appeal just because it's rather sparse and bleak, but doesn't compare well, not least with last year's Estonian entry.

I didn't mind Slovenia. It wasn't GREAT but it was alright. They broke the fundamental rule of Eurovision of having a word in the song / artist name that would be difficult for certain countries to pronounce.

Malcolm Lincoln was AWFUL. The performance came across very amateur and the whole thing seemed more novelty than quirky. He reminded me of what Neil Hannon might have been like as a gawky teenager.

Did not qualify, #15 in Semi Final 1

Oh my dear Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, when will you raise your game? Only ever JUST qualifying at best (and even then the Juries have overruled it a few times), I am struggling to think of a decent entry from these guys. Certainly none worthy to perform under their rather marvellous flag.

Some more Eastern European RAWK going on here, with a bit of rap in there too. This should leave me totally cold but somehow it doesn't... but it's not like I'm in a rush to hear it again, so let's just MOVE ON. I do want them to have a good song ONE year at least.

I thought that Macedonia wasn't bad. He didn't look anything LIKE a popstar though. Maybe someone who once WAS a popstar and has aged really badly. I mean - is he REALLY only 3 years older than me?

    35. Kuunkuiskaajat - Työlki ellää (Finland )
Did not qualify, #11 in Semi Final 1

Now I'm braced for some opposition from this point on. I just want to stress that there weren't ANY songs that I didn't like this year, at worst I was NONPLUSSED. Even Aisha was good for a laugh. So I feel a bit mean putting these rather striking Finnish ladies so low down.

The performance really made this one, and everyone likes a bit of a clap-along don't they? (Only at appropriate places, not all the way through like a Noel's House Party audience). It obviously went down better in the arena than with the voters, and was sadly another victim of a decidedly anti-Nordic attitude this year, but more on that later...

Naj boooooooooooooo (naj bo, naj bo) sprememba scene
Naj vseeeeeeeeeeeee (naj vse, naj vse) obnori ta ZVOK

Quite a catchy tune actually, but the constant shifts in genre were too brash and gimmicky.

According to the Diggiloo translation the lyrics are quite the metaphor

Polka is the queen in the Slovenian land
It brings out dance, shrieks and laughter
Rock is the king of partying, sharp, but sincere
Hot like summer, colourful like autumn

I fucking LOVE Kuunkuiskaajat. That's my 2nd favourite song of the competition. They look very quirky, were featured in a lot of the indents, I loved the tune, I love their name, I love the fact it means Moonwhisperers in English. Fabulous fabulous record. It possibly sounds a lot better on record than the performance they gave in the studio.

    34. Filipa Azevedo - Há dias assim (Portugal )
    #18 in the Final

Oh now mean Diddy ... what a beautiful young lady this was, and the first of the finalists to get knocked out of the running. It was quite a pretty song, but that was about it really.

I feel like I'm being harsh because it was a sweet song and she really sang it well. But I just didn't CARE. She was a twinkly bit of fluff amongst a rather strong final 5 songs, and just got lost. Reminds me of how I felt about Cyprus last year, though that girl had the performance to blame (Jahhhmp ) ..

Portugal this year was a LOT like Cyprus last year - it's the hand action at the end. And both were hideous, boring songs.

    33. 3+2 ft Robert Wells - Butterflies (Belarus )
    #24 in the Final

I can imagine a number of you would want to knock this one down a few notches, though if you aren't even in the top 30 I can't imagine it makes a huge amount of difference. This one just wore me down in the end. It's very sentimental and claggy, like the sort of piano ballads that I kept hearing in Japan.

The first guy singing wasn't great, though I think they did their best for the final. The song is nice enough, if a bit of a drudge, but at least there is some semblance of a climax towards the end. Anyone else reminded of "When a child is born" in places?

I can hardly mention this without talking about THAT gimmick too, which - crowdpleasing as it was - really WAS a moment worth sharing

Dodgy accents aside, Butterflies is a lovely song. The gimmick is just pointless though, but I guess it did go down well with the crowds.

    32. InCulto - Eastern European Funk (Lithuania )
Did not qualify, #12 in Semi Final 2

So, novelty time ... I suppose? The really terrible novelty entries were happily very thin on the ground, probably victim of the credit crunch making it an expensive joke to play on Europe. Obviously this has the old "LOL Eurovision won't be Eurovision without clothes ripped off" and "LOL man in hotpants" cards played, but the track itself IS quite likeable.

As far as jokes go, it's not much of a rib-tickler, probably why they had to resort to stripping, but it's quite a fun little dancey/folky/something mash-up. Lithuania have at least come out with WORSE. I was a little surprised to see them leave the contest in the Semi, but I suppose it makes the contest a little less open to ridicule by outsider tossers.

The actual song sounds better on record, though. I don't know why but Susan Aho (the accordian player) reminds me of my mummy.
