    mad Downton Abbey

I am quite excited about this. It is posh period drama about a stately home, written by Julian Fellowes (who did Gosford Park and best film of all time The Young Victoria), AND starring Maggie Smith and Liam Connor off corrie.

It definitely looks like my type of thing, dripping with money and pensive repression -

way to rip off the social network trailer, itv

Yes. It looks fairly promising as these things go. Exactly what ITV should be making.

Yeah i hope it's a big success, so they can confidently think outside the SHIT CRIME DRAMAS box more often in future. This is the first thing from them that's excited me in an absolute age.

Looking forward to this - when does it start, a week tomorrow?

    What a cast too.

It looks like UNUSUALLY high quality for ITV. Probably because the production company had to co-fund it themselves.

This does look very promising indeed.

The trailer does a good job of highlighting Maggie Smith's incredible facial expressions.

It looks amazing. They've really gone to town with the advertising too, I've been seeing it everywhere. If this is big for them, let's hope it means more decent stuff in the future.

It's all over the tube isn't it? Although so was Married Single Other.

It's next sunday, right after the X Factor bootcamp reveal i think, so fingers crossed it can do well. I'm guesing it'll then be on after X Factor for most of its run, which should help things.

Even I like the look of it and I'm not a big period drama fan. Maggie SMith is just amazing.

Yes it is all over the Tube. This is the network which made Brideshead Revisited and Upstairs Downstairs (which I just adore). Those are a long time ago but ITV has always been capable of making this sort of television and hopefully it is finally willing to do so again.

Bouquet of Barbed Wire is rather good too.

    shocked

I take it you know Upstairs Downstairs is back back BACK? But on the BBC this time. it's filming now for, i'm guessing, an early next year broadcast. It's a continuation rather than a remake, with one of the original serving girls being back as housekeeper, etc...

I have Barbed Wire skyplussed, though its shaping up to be one of those things that stays on there til we need to make space. NO OFFENCE, TREVOR EVE

Barbed Wire is very addictive - slightly crap but well-acted at least.

I've been completely put off by the use of Every Breath You Take in the trailer.

I really want to watch this Bouquet of Barbed Wire thing, but the problem is the title for me. IT REALLY SOUNDS SHIT.

This starts tomorrow and is getting very good reviews (of the two i've read in today's papers).

Sadly this thread is no longer front page when you google Downton Abbey, so there's now less chance of Maggie Smith signing up to Moopy

I really liked that. I don’t normally watch any TV unless its got “HOT US DRAMA” written all over it but I thought it was really good. I loved the opening shot of the walkthrough the house without any cutaways. I was actually thinking “this is all very titanic” and then LO AND BEHOLD!

I'm going to try and watch it properly tomorrow. I was half lesson planning and half watching it and half talking to RB on the phone (yes, three halves equal a whole), so I think it devalued it somewhat.

If i was a gay duke, wonky faced Edith could definitely make me try women.

i LOVED the sister's line about her fishing with no bait. Julian Fellowes is SUCH a bitchy old gay (though oddly one with a wife and son).

I can even forgive Charlie Cox because he was great. And I love brooding dark haired valet-wannabe with homosexual leanings.

The lead bitch daughter has potential too, as does poor old wonk face.

Maggie was amazing, although nothing compared to how she was in Gosford Park ("Don't clap, you'll just encourage him." )

I love this from Grace Dent

"One swallow doesn't make a summer, Thomas," sneers one young toff, dumping Thomas into the "Cheers for the grapple, old bean, never telegram me ever again" file.

The "one swallow..." line was used far better to dismiss gayness by Frankie Dean in Hollyoaks (i bet Fellowes never misses the Omnibus), but it still made me laugh.

I thought it was extraordinary. The oldest daughter, Lady Grantham and the American wife were my three favourites.

I'm just settling down to watch this now and I've just found out that my bootcamp buddy Phyllis is in it! She's MARVELOUS.
