a.k.a. Helena Bonham-Carter's only Oscar nomination to date, amazingly (though that looks likely to change this year).



I really love this film. The Venice scenes in particular are absolutely beautiful and the I find the characters so intriguing. You're never quite sure how much Millie knows, and to what extent she's willfully fooling herself. I'm surprised Alison Elliott never really did much else of note (that I've noticed, I may be wrong...) since this. I think her performance is just as good as Carter's, and she's so pretty.

Also, re-watching it last night, I'd forgotten that Elizabeth McGovern a.k.a. rubbish old Lady Cora from Downton Abbey has a significant role in it. I fear she's just going to make me giggle whatever she appears in from now on.
