God how I detest WHSmith
I miss Borders![]()

I got put off WHSmiths after being offered a FREE GALAXY with my purchases every single time I went in![]()

Me getting access to a Habitat AND a Borders for the first time in my life, only for them to be SNATCHED AWAY has been the CRUELLEST part of this recession. That and George Osborne.

The last thing I ever bought in a Borders was All Saints' Studio 1 for £2. Glory days![]()
All Saints are apparently in troubled times too.
If only the quality of their clothing wasn't indirectly proportional to the ridiculous prices they were asking.
Habitat remains empty. Mind you not that it looks much DIFFERENT, it always was SPARSE. Parts of the town centre are becoming quite sad sights... I know North Street was ALWAYS A BIT CRAP, but it's verging on a JOKE NOW. Peacocks and Past Times further add to the nail in it's ELVIS PRESLEY RUG SHOP COFFIN.
I'm amazed Urban Outfitters seem to still be expanding. Or that anyone buys anything in there at full price.
Clothes shop weirdly seem to be GROWING and GROWING. I swear there's MORE THAN EVER.
Our main shopping quarters which opened in may has seen three shops close in the past week. Past Times and Hawkins Bazaar both opened here in november and closed just after christmas.
I only discovered Peacocks a few months ago, mostly shite but they sell decent smart shirts and trousers, I hope they survive.
The Guardian has a nice rundown of how the major chains are doing

I think WH Smith actually survives from flogging Galaxy's at the till
I BET SHE'S A CUNTIts chief executive Kate Swann has demonstrated an ability to defy gravity, lifting profit margins as sales fall, and is unlikely to disappoint

Oh I don't mind WHsmith. Terrible in town, but a saviour in stations and airports. Better than any of its rivals. Fuck you whistlestop.
*pays £9 for a pack of 10 and a Freddo*
Worst saviour ever. Jesus would never charge you for carrier bags and then offer you a free toblerone with a Daily Mail.

I don't understand how it's so successful.
"Would you like a bar of Galaxy for 99p with your diet coke?" OF COURSE NOT. Otherwise I would have picked one up. How are people taken in by it?
Smiths I don't get anymore . No DVDs and cigs are a quid more and why do they scan random vouchers all the time before you buy anything .

Has anyone been to a WHsmith with a self service checkout?
The SCREEN asks if you want a galaxy
FUCK OFF
WHSmiths has a purpose at least (not JUST to sell overstocked chocolate bars). The little shops in stations and airports are generally handy and there aren't MANY places left where you can browse pretty much an A-Z of magazine publications *buys issue 1 of Let's Knit weekly for 99p (normal price £16.99)*
Their "free bottle of water with a Telegraph" deal is good, so long as you put the Telegraph straight in the bin afterwards of course.
I can't understand Smiths at all...surely its book sales that keep it going, considering Waterstones are inexplicably still doing ok?
No one BUYS magazines in Smiths- they never DID! YOu just go in on your lunchbreak to have a FLICK THROUGH...
It's been too long, it's been too long...
Part Times had a pop-up shop in Glasgow over Xmas which was always full of people looking at stuff for elderly relatives and then realising it was all shit and leaving. The only store to even think about equalling their miserable footfall-to-sales ration was the "Menkind" shop next door. A bottle opener shaped like a penis? £12? Bargain!

I've been thinking about this - if HMV does go down, will anyone try to fill the gap? Would it be fantastic for the remaining small, independent shops or would people just stop even considering hitting the shops for music at all, thus killing off the last clutch? Obviously, some (very) specialist stores wouldn't feel an impact but I do fear for what would happen if HMV did fold.

HMV sold Waterstone's because it was the about the only part of the business they could get any cash for (£53m). It had under performed, like every part of the HMV group, but was the healthiest aspect of that business.
There is that aspect.
But they are still doing poorly and won't last forever.

I still miss Woolworths.
