It does look like we're being set up for a Lord Grantham/Cora split. Johnkm gonna be loving all that acting.
It was a really fantastic episode. Mary's character is just becoming better and better. Her dedication to Matthew is just beautiful and I love that she's grown up enough to behave with such compassion towards Lavinia (even if Lavinia does sound like she's living in the 2010s). I'm looking forward to seeing Matthew and his mother together a bit more. Penelope Wilton almost had me in floods of tears when she returned to his bedside without saying anything.
I found it all very emotional, including William's death but it was the wedding that really got me.So sad for so many reasons.
The Dowager Countess provided MUCH welcome relief. The telephone scene was just perfect. I was in stitches. Again, it's been lovely to see her character become more three dimensional. Mrs Hughes too. War has changed them all. Poor old Lord Grantham though - he really is such a spare part at the moment!

I have to say I agree. I used to indifferent to her AT BEST but I think I could safely say that she is my current favourite character. Fellowes has most certainly provided her with a bit more DEPTH.
Indeed.Spoiler: I've heard certain rumours regarding:

There's NO WAY the new maid is an actual war widow.
It's funny though... I imagine that on further examination of that era one would find it an extremely commonly used device of the FALLEN WOMAN.

Cora will be hard pushed to top the EMOTIONAL RANGE shown after the dead baby/soap incident.

I've only just realised Mrs Bates is Catherine of Aragon from The Tudors.
I feel really bad for not noticing - she was my favourite Queen.

Oh see now i assumed that the new maid (who i really like on first impressions btw) IS actually a war widow, because if she was just a FALLEN WOMAN then it wouldn't make much dramatic sense to mention now that there are some women who lie about such things, because it now won't be new and surprising to as much of the audience if she IS telling fibs.
But maybe it's a double bluff. And Fellowes DOES do quite a few tv-nonos like that. *kills Pamuk in the ad breaks*
I hope RB and Cwej went to Highclere dressed up as Bates and Anna.
I forgot to mention I met Sexy Pamuk at Comic-Con this summer at the Bedlam panel. *stalker*

I have just caught up with this, Dame Maggie's distaste for the telephone was too wonderful. The whole episode was the best of the series so far though I must admit I was quite relieved that William eventually popped his clogs as I couldn't have been doing with a Daisy trapped in a loveless marriage storyline.
Evil Thomas really needs to get on with some proper scheming however, it has been a bit lacking in recent weeks.
Now this is a VERY PATCHY SOURCE, because i got it off a drunk who heard on the radio, but APPARENTLY the reason for the lack of a series three commission at this point is because ITV are trying to get Fellowes and the production company to make the next series ten episodes long, and then subsequent series to be 20 episodes a year. Fellowes, who has been saying that he always planned it to be a three series thing (ONE -The end of the Edwardian era, TWO - World War One, THREE - The roaring twenties with edith as a whorey old flapper) is having none of it, hence the negotiations deadlock.
I actually really hope he gets his way. Twenty episodes a year would surely kill it quality-wise, and it would sort of make sense for it to end next year with Fellowes doing the twenties. I'd love a few more years of it at the current series length, but the time jumps really would have to slow down/stop for that, and maybe the quality would properly dip if it's not been planned that way. ALTHOUGH he'd surely wheel out a murder mystery at some point, and i do think a big series long one of those set at Downton would be MASSIVE. I'm half expecting one next year to be honest.
As i say though, this could be lots of garbled blarney. It all seems plausible enough, mind.
That does seem quite likely, we've already moved what 6 years across 1.5 series. People are going to have to start AGING and dare I say it, the Dowager Countess is going to have to DIE at some point so ending it before said TRAGEDY occurs would be best for us all.
