O'Brian did indeed look great, Mrs. Patmore considerably less so.

Fucking love Mrs Patmore. Shiny material AND leopard print? Whyever not

The O'Brien transformation is much more legitimately fabulous of course. I've seen her with tits and hair in Benidorm though, so i don't find it too surprising. She's QUITE the CHAMELEON. I wouldn't be too surprised if she starts to break into films in a 2011 Olivia Coleman-esque way at some point.

    OMG

The thought of SHIRLEY MACLAINE and DAME MAGGIE squaring off is just too fabulous to comprehend. AMAZING

They're obviously really trying to capitalise on the show's American success.

    OH that is good.

PBS is usually regarded as a bit of a shitty channel I think but looking at the website I think it looks GRAND!

Yeah, I read that the figures PBS are getting for this are really quite brilliant (especially for them) which is GREAT. As for Shirley, what a fabulous piece of casting

PBS gets most of the costume dramas. They should REALLY start airing in the UK. It would be like a HOT 19th CENTURY version of Dave. Except with good programming.

And yeah, TOP CASTING. I was hoping we'd get Old Mother Cora this year, they've dropped the odd hint over the last two series that she's a fabulous old cunt. The dowager dislikes her already.

Downton Abbey's Elizabeth McGovern to play Isle of Wight Festival

Downton Abbey star Elizabeth McGovern has been confirmed as one of the acts performing at this year's Isle of Wight Festival.

The 50-year-old actress, who plays the Countess of Grantham in the television period drama, will take to the main stage at the event this June with rock band Big Country, best known for tracks such as 'In a Big Country' and 'Fields of Fire'.

McGovern told the BBC: "I am thrilled to be playing with such a stellar cast of musicians."

Tony Butler from Big Country said: "We had a tradition of working with great female vocalists such as Kate Bush and Eddi Reader in the past, so having the opportunity to have Elizabeth perform with us at the IOW is going to be really cool."

Isle of Wight Festival promoter John Giddings said that he has been "a fan" of McGovern "since Once Upon A Time In America", adding: "As soon as I found out that Elizabeth could sing, it was a must to invite her to play at the festival. We will roll out the red carpet for Lady Cora."

McGovern will also perform at the festival with her own band Sadie and the Hotheads on June 23.

Acts already confirmed for the Isle of Wight Festival include Lana Del Rey, Elbow, Example, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, Kelis and Feeder.

Can she even SING? I guess it doesn't matter - it'll be a spectacle at any rate.

Maggie Smith has informed writer Julian Fellowes she would like for the third season of Downton Abbey to be her last, according to the Daily Mail, which added that he had persuaded her to stick around for the Christmas special. Smith plays the acid-tongued Dowager Countess. Britain’s ITV drama, which airs on PBS’ Masterpiece in the United States, is filmed at Highclere Castle in Hampshire and at Ealing Studios in London. A source told the Daily Mail that “Maggie has asked Julian to write her character out. She is filming until August and then wants to leave, going out on a high. She thinks that three series is enough.” Smith, 77, won an Oscar for the title role in the 1969 movie The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie but she’s probably better known for her work in the Harry Potter movies and for another Fellowes film, Gosford Park.

No great surprise there and I agree it would be better to leave on a relative high, assuming the writing is good for series three

Sad news, but hardly unexpected. Even aside from the fact Maggie doesn't want to do it, the Dowager Countess could hardly live forever anyway. I just hope she DOES go out on a high.

    CORA SPEAKS

There was an outcry recently when Downton Abbey missed out on a Bafta nomination for its second series and it appears that one of its stars might understand the snub. Elizabeth McGovern, who plays Cora, Countess of Grantham in the Julian Fellowes' ITV1 period drama has reportedly admitted that she wasn't too keen on the second series.

'There is a slightly different tone to the second season, partly because the show had to deal with this huge elephant which is the First World War, and in some ways Downton Abbey wasn't set up for that,' she told The LA Times.

'What's made the show successful and different is that attention to character detail and that's what the audience likes.'

'Writers [in the second season] had to do a lot of glossing over the domestic life. Some of the small moments between characters that characterised the first season.'

Perhaps it is a testament to her words that the series missed out on the Bafta nomination- while E4's Made In Chelsea made an unexpected appearance on the list.

Made In Chelsea, which purports to be a 'reality' TV series, features a disclaimer at the beginning of each episode saying that some elements are repeated purely for entertainment, and it has been attacked repeatedly for its ‘overly staged’ scenes.

McGovern has however told the Mail Online that despite the earlier comments, she was 'in no way criticizing the second season [of Downton Abbey] or implying that I loved or enjoyed it any less.'

The actress stressed: 'When asked about the second series I said that the tone differed slightly from the first. There would be some people who would naturally prefer the more domestic detail of series one and others who would love the faster pace and heightened drama of the war years.

'Julian Fellowes is a brilliant writer and I am proud and privileged to be part of this show. The third season is so rich with character detail, storylines and new faces that I can't wait for people to see it.'

Last year, Downton was up for best drama series, the audience award and supporting actor for Brendan Coyle, but missed out on all three.

ts only Bafta Television Award nomination this year is in the best supporting actress category, for Dame Maggie Smith who plays the Dowager Countess of Grantham.

Downton pulls in an average of 10million viewers per episode compared with the E4 show’s paltry 500,000.

McGovern is currently promoting Cheerful Weather For A Wedding, in which she plays the mother of a bride-to-be (Felicity Jones), who is in turmoil when her ex-boyfriend turns up on her wedding day.

She attended the film's world premiere on Friday night and moved on to the after-party at ROC restaurant.

McGovern filmed the third series of Downton Abbey in Hampshire in February and March.

Joining the cast was Shirley Maclaine, who plays Cora's American mother Martha Levinson.

There's no footage of ROCKIN LIZ at Isle of Wight yet, but I've found a few youtubes of her band.

I love how she sings in her "ELIZABETH MCGOVERN IS ACTING NOW" voice.
