I think her role was written as a one series thing all along. She's been replaced by ginger Emmerdale girl now. I wonder if anyone will notice?

Oh it was deffo a one series character (she got a job from the telephone guy in the series 1 finale), but i'd still be GUTTED. Especially when it became so huge, and you're a bit rubbish and unlikely to get anything else even half as good.

Also do we know if Samantha Bond is in this series more? She struck me as a possible Upstairs equivalent of O'Brien. Upstairs could benefit from a proper cunt.

Aw I liked the girl who was wanting to better herself. Maybe she'll come back in series 10 as a Lady Of An Estate.

I love how Edith was wanting to learn to drive, is she now aiming to be Sybil? She needs her own I-DEN-TI-TY.

I do hope we have more Samantha Bond in this, I do so love her (even if she is the voice of those Godawful Ariel adverts).

Which Downton Abbey character are YOU?

Your results: You are the Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley (Maggie Smith). You do not suffer fools gladly. In fact you do not suffer anything at all because you refuse to entertain any form of discomfort in your life whatsoever.

You are Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery). You yearn for glamour and excitement. And the exhumation of poor Mr Pamuk. Oh how you miss him!

I hope this doesn't make me a sociopath.

Your results: You are Thomas Barrow, head footman (Rob James-Collier). Nothing will stop you in your quest for world domination. Nothing. And certainly not the second footman.
As terrible as it is, i know i'd have done exactly the same as him in the face of looming war.

    Oh UNLUCKY

Although i much preferred Bates upon rewatching the series. He just needs to get over his moral decency a bit and stop being such a fucking MARTYR all the time.

WHEN IS THIS SHIT JUST GOING TO START?

Mr m has been driving me INSANE the past few weeks in the lead-up. This must be how he feels with the BAFTA-winning The Only Way Is Essex.

I talk to Jim Carter, who plays Carson the butler. He has a Mount Rushmore face and deep voice; he is a wonderful actor who stole many scenes in Shakespeare in Love. His job in Downton Abbey is to redefine the human limits of sycophancy and self-sacrifice, and to hover a lot. "Most modern TV," he says, "is 15 guys in grey suits, saying 'I'm on it, guv' and very few women." He thinks the enormous female cast is one of the reasons for the show's success. And what did he think when he first saw the script? "Work," he says.

Outside we bump into Brendan Coyle/Mr Bates. Coyle is up for a Bafta on the following Sunday for best supporting actor and he is in massive shades. I think he is wearing a bandana, but I might have dreamt it. His aftershave is a wall. He falls on Carter.

"Bafta aren't sending a car for me," he says.

    "Darling," mutters Carter.

That was done and dusted AGES ago. She lost the baby when O'Brien left some soap for her to slip on when she got out of the bath.

I have to say my favourite moment of that episode was a rather macabre one, the guy talking to Thomas about 'a bullet with your name on it' and then getting shot through the head

Also Bates' wife is a BITCH, hopefully she dies miserably. It takes a very special kind of person to make me feel sorry for HIM, but she managed it.

I can't believe Bates is taking the slack for something he didn't do in order to defend somebody else's honour AGAIN!

Amazing start to the series though. I've missed it more than I realised. I do so love Lady Mary, she's so prickly but her heart is bigger than anybody else in this thing.

Bates' wife to DIE ASAP. It even made me feel SORRY for TVs drabbest couple!

More screentime for the the Dowager Countess PLEASE. There were more ad breaks than there were lines from Dame Maggie.

And the end was a complete moment for everyone watching. Will we see a new type of Thomas?

    shocked

Shitting hell i thought that was MARVELLOUS. Just nigh on perfect, it may have even overtaken Mad Men as the best tv show in the world right now according to me. There was just SO MUCH TO LOVE. I could list it all but i'd be here all week and would be tired and heavily soiled when i had to stop writing and get up for next week's. But everyone was BRILLIANT and fuck me did i love love love Mrs Bates. What a deliciously SPECTACULAR cunt. I can't believe you're all (two of you) hating her outright, she will make magnificent telly if tonight was anything to go by.

And i thought the line "I think everyone i've ever danced with is now dead" (to be none exact) was just beautiful, although felt more Mary than Sybil. Oh and the feather giving! I loved Branson giggling when he was presented with his. And everything else just... yeah I LOVE YOU DOWNTON. Marvellous

And hasn't Bates gotten FAT? (more so)

To be FAIR I want SEVERAL of the characters to DIE PAINFUL DEATHS, but that doesn't mean I don't want them in the show.

I'd be UP for SCANDAL to ROCK DOWNTON. But then I'd also be happy to never have to suffer The Bates & Anna Show again.

Lady Mary is clearly doing VERY HANDILY for herself by getting in with the ye olde Rupert Murdoch figure. Although perhaps not if there's rival papers that will now want a go at her. Ooooh

Are we thinking someone's going to DIE in the war? I'm thinking and hoping William. He annoys me a bit
