The definitive female act of the 90s
HEY KIDS
a new initiative from your lovely mod team. Each week we are going to champion and celebrate (and by celebrate we mean mock, over-analyse, argue about and ultimately condemn) an artist or act that has a strong nostalgic quality - plenty to talk about but has very little opportunity in these pages of NOW and CURRENT.
So please provide your opinions, rates, ranks, top tens, video clips, funny moments, insults and bile etc, and keep this moopy concept going.
We're also taking recommendations. If you want an artist you feel we've neglected or forgotten about, please PM me with your idea and we'll try and get him/her/them included in the near future.
In the meantime, let's move on to our first ARTIST OF THE WEEK: ETERNAL.

Are they the UK's answer to En Vogue/SWV?
Were they the spark that lit the fuse for The Spice Girls and All Saints?
Are they as important as Bananarama or Sugababes in the history of female pop groups in the UK?
What was their best song?
Were they better/worse when Louise left?
DISCUSS.
AMAZING
The definitive female act of the 90s
FEARLESS FEMALE
Never liked them
Not a SINGLE classic track amongst their dreary output and they were utterly INSPID in EVERY WAY
Erm - Always & Forever went FOUR times platinum in the UK?![]()

LOVED them at the time
Would never choose to listen to them now and find Esther's voice shouty as fuck
And if we stay together
We'll feel the rhythm of the evening taking us up high
Never mind the weather
We'll be dancing in the street until the morning light
I do love a bit of WIKI NUMBER CRUNCHING
album chart peaks
Always & Forever - #2
Power Of A Woman - #6
Before The Rain - #3
Eternal - #87![]()

Their GH was unbelievably big, wasn't it? One of the biggest-selling albums of 1997 - and that was a bumper year for sales ALL ROUND!
FEARLESS FEMALE
...and they released SIX singles from the debut album.
Now I love a bit of Eternal, but I think even I have forgotten how big they once were. 12 top 10 hits!
"Stay" remains SEMINAL but I think "Good Thing" was just as good.

And I am BER-LESSSSSED
*croak*
*dies under the weight of epic amounts of BAD KARMA*
Just A Step From Heaven and Stay were undeniably fab.
I have a soft spot for screamathon "EPICS" I Am Blessed and Someday. And lest we forget Monica scored a US #1 with Angel of Mine just over a year after they recorded it!

FEARLESS FEMALE
they had four number ones in Japan
BIG IN JAPAN
including a song called Finally which I'm not familiar with
'Just A Step From Heaven' was my school bus tune of choice. 'Always and Forever' was the first album I bought, and surprisingly patchy considering it had four killer singles.
I've posted this on moopy before but this really was the moment that Eternal became as good as their US counterparts. Filthy, funky NEW JILL SWING like it was meant to be. MID NINETIES HEAVEN
of course album #3 was Disney pop schmaltz but it worked for them so whatever
Save Our Love was the first CD single I ever bought. Then I had to buy all the other singles from Always & Forever despite never buying the album. I now have the Greatest Hits but no studio albums, but I remember borrowing Power of a Woman from a friend at the time and thinking it was shit.
I'd still say they're my favourie British girl group of the 90s though - no offence to the Spice Girls but despite the great pop songs in retrospect, I felt they were aimed at girls younger than me while Eternal were a bit more mature.
Monica RUINED Angel of Mine.

Eternal were the first girl group I have any recollection of - I had their 'Power Of A Woman' album on tape. But there was absolutely NOTHING there to latch onto as a 9 year old gay. I seem to recall my older female friend liking them though.
singles rate anyone? (NOT YOU CHRISTIAN)
10 Stay
06 Save Our Love
08 Just A Step From Heaven
?? Sweet Funky Thing
05 So Good
06 Oh Baby I...
?? Crazy
06 Power Of A Woman
04 I Am Blessed
11 Good Thing
05 Someday
?? Secrets
10 Don't You Love Me OMG I forgot about this. Ridiculous lyrics but very very catchy
08 I Wanna Be The Only One
07 Angel Of Mine
06 Watcha Gonna Do
yeah and I have to say I prefer Eternal's version because Esther's voice is just more accomplished (sorry CHRISSY)
They are extremely similar but Monica's version just felt a bit more lightweight. I don't hate it but there's no need to have both versions because the production is identical, so I pretty much just ignore the presence of the Monica version, even though the album it's from is very good
I quite LOVED 'Someday' however - it's not quite so EPIC without the end credits to The Hunchback Of Notre Dame scrolling in front of my face but it was suitably OVERBLOWN and ROUSING given the context.

FEARLESS FEMALE
It was Monica changing the some if the lyric to sound like some wishy washy teen love song that I hated most.

Let's of course not forget the DEFINITIVE reading of 'I Wanna Be The Only One'
who remembers bargain basement identikit group N-Tyce?
I did like Telefunkin![]()
