I've bought a book on classical Japanese grammar (titled Madonna... ?!). it's IN JAPANESE but fortunately it's not as hard as I'd feared

One of my new years resolutions is to learn 150 Kanji. I think I might be on about 40-50 at the moment. Hotboy said he wants to do the Japanese Proficiency Test in December, so I might try that, lowest level of course!

I bought some flashcards off eBay that have the 100 they will use at that level

My Spanish is horrible bad these days, worse than my Swedish, really could do with some work or a course at university I reckon. Picked up a bit of Italian over the years (thanks to best friend being Italian) and regaining some interest in Japanese after having had it at school when I was 13 or 14 I reckon.

These days I'm really kicking myself for never picking up French when I was in school. IDIOT.

And even STARTING to learn a new language (even if you don't persuade it as religiously as you might have wanted to) is NEVER wasted time. EVER.

I don't think I particularly enjoyed doing it at school/college but I was always pretty good at it. I've forgotten the majority of my GCSE German though, I'm still alright with French (A* at GCSE, A at A-Level ).

    7-10: Latin
    9-10: Spanish

Had some voluntary Italian lessons from 7-9.

    I avoided French two times

As far as I can recall.

I had my first Russian lesson on Monday. It was brilliant. I can't wait to learn the second half of the alphabet.

I got an A* in my Spanish GCSE and an A at AS Level, but regardless of that I'm still absolutely useless at it. It really is one thing to be good in class and a whole other thing to be confident at actually speaking it. I can barely articulate my thoughts in English, let alone in a foreign language. Conversation classes were a nightmare. Not helped by the sinister old Spanish woman taking the classes I'm sure, but I imagine they would have been horrible regardless of the teacher.

Welcome to my first lesson in Greek. It lasted 2 hours. And the THICK CUNTS in the class still couldn't manage to pronounce the letters. No chi ISN'T pronounced "see aitch", you utter MONG.

I've decided Italian. I want to learn a language and expand my mind. Plus I'd love to sleep with more Italian's so surely this is a good start.

That and Maori as I know a bit (as any NZer would), but would like to be fluent.

Was it not a beginners' class?

It was but I think that two two-hour lessons on the alphabet and, when asked how chi is pronounced, to say "see aitch" is really fucking thick.

You can't become fluent in a language from a book. You pretty much have to live in the country for a period of time to become truly fluent. I have A level French & Spanish so speak them very well but when I am in those countries I realise I'm far from fluent. On the other hand I studied Portuguese for 2 years and then spent 6 months in Brazil and 6 in Portugal, speaking barely any English and would say I'm pretty much fluent.

No, I was studying Social Anthropology as part of my degree and took it up to compliment that as Portuguese is spoken in several of the countries I covered. Shagging Brazilians in Brazil as a result was a happy coincidence ;)

Our university has started offering a wide range of language courses (at various difficulty levels) at quite good value prices. I'm quite interested at having a go at one, though I seriously doubt my general abilities for learning language. I'm drawn to BEGINNERS GERMAN.

My degree is in Social Policy so it's possibly not of much use in that sense unless I plan to have a gander over the policy documents coming out of the Reichstag, but I do really like Germany and have friends that speak the language. There's a good chance that my learning would never extend beyond a hobby but it would be useful for when hopefully revisit the place.

i've discovered a pretty nifty iphone app called busuu - it has quite a few levels, the first few are free, there are exercises, they read stuff so you can work on pronunciation, etc
i'm not sure if it's any good for learning a new language but it seems to be helping me refresh my spanish

I have a slightly tragic fascination with multi-lingual Hollywood A-listers.

    Some of my faves

Sandra Bullock is fluent in German

    Charlize Theron - Afrikaans

    Mila Kunis - Russian

    Natalie Portman - Hebrew

And loads speak French obv, perhaps most notably Jodie Foster
