i think Anne Hathaway was approached to play Fantine, it has not been confirmed what accent she will use.
Les Misérables (2012)
I was VERY EXCITED to hear that this was happening, directed by Tom "King's Speech" Hopper. And then i was considerably less excited to hear that boring old Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman were going to be in it as Javert and Valjean respectively.
But now that this nobrainer bit of casting seems to be happening i'm up for it once more -
I hope she gets fat for it.Helena Bonham Carter is reportedly close to signing up for a role in Tom Hooper's big-screen adaptation of Les Misérables.
According to the Daily Mail, the director is keen for Bonham Carter to play Madame Thenardier in his adaptation of the popular musical.
Earlier this weekend, it was confirmed that Russell Crowe had agreed to take on the role of police inspector Javert and Hugh Jackman will play ex-convict Jean Valjean.
Les Misérables is being adapted for the screen by Gladiator screenwriter William Nicholson.
Is anybody else interested? I await a rant from ChristianIt's out next December.

Yeah i think she's going to be Epponine, which she pretty much auditioned for live onstage at the oscars this year, by shoehorning in a perf of "On My Own".
I've liked her in the past but i don't think i want her in this. It needs more appealing people to make up for the Jackman/Crowe suckerpunch of zzzz. Get Kimberly Walsh on the phone -
STUNNING
I have always wondered JUST what happens in the missing 2 lines around 1:30 in that video![]()
Ha, i'd never noticed it was only two (quite difficult) lines missing
One can only imagine the HORRORS
I'm moist indeed TP, MOIST INDEED
Primarily because I feel a LOT of opportunity for UNHINGED RANTING between now and December 2012
Having said that, I don't really like Les "Miz" all that much, so I'm not overly bothered with what they do with it - but certainly very INTERESTED.
Dear old HUGH seems like fabulous casting for Jeen Valjeen (if perhaps a little young for the later sections - someone get those white haired wigs prepared and STAT) and even daft old Russell could be very good as his tortured nemesis - if he's got the not inconsiderable pipes required for my favourite song from the show, "Stars", that is.
Anne seems too old for Éponine (I forget how old she's supposed to be when the show hits its temporal stride late in Act One) and probably too young for Fantine. Maybe Hugh's wigmaker can do some overtime and whip her up some nice silver hair too. Having said that, any more Kimberley "deadweight" Walsh chat may be accidentally edited out of this thread. Apologies in advance.
The key question right now is what is going to get CUT. The entire show proper is 195 minutes long but it hasn't been performed like that since the 80s. I wish they'd do the whole bloody lot, including the full Love Montage (I Saw Him Once/In My Life/A Heart Full Of Love) even if it's just for the BluRay, but I'm guessing they won't. I hope they start by binning most of Gavroche though - even "Castle On A Cloud"could be reduced to 4 lines for me.
Anyway, my tips for the AXE would be "Little People", "Dog Eats Dog" (who needs it?), "Drink With Me" (sorry loons, but it doesn't really move the plot along), "Beggars At The Feast", "Turning" (for sure!). Sure, that means severely cutting down on the Thénardiers, but frankly, they're a shadow of what they are in the novel anyway, and I don't think they're strictly necessary if you think of this more purely as Jeen Valjeen's story... "Master Of The House" could probably be axed on that basis too but that's such a crowd pleaser (and a much needed break in MOOD at that point in the show), they surely won't.

While we're here, let's have a Claude-Michel Schönberg/Alain Boublil musicals ranking, eh?
1. Miss Saigon
2. Martin Guerre (Original 1996 London version)
3. Les Misérables
4. Martin Guerre (1999 West Yorkshire Playhouse version)
5. The Pirate Queen (utterly AAAAAAWFUL)

I would imagine that alot of the songs will be abridged a la the schools version, which also cuts Little People and Dog Eats Dog completely. I most certainly agree about Turning, which just grinds the whole damn thing to a halt, and Drink With Me, which I can't imagine working quite as well in a movie, when you can't pause a moment in time like you can on stage. Beggars At The Feast STAYS though, especially if Helena is on board.
Some of it's not great and let's face it, if you want to listen/watch Madame Butterfly, why not just go to the original?
Howeverrrrrrr... the staging in London was truly incredibly with some amazing set pieces and some of the score (mostly Kim's wistful stuff) is utterly beautiful. The orchestrations (which were put together in a few weeks before the opening after Cameron Macintosh threw out the original ones) really elevate it too. Get your mitts on the original London cast recording with Lea Salonga if you can - songs like "The Movie In My Mind", "The Sacred Bird", "Please", "This Money Is Yours" and "I'd Give My Life For You" are just amazing.
Having said that, I was chatting with a friend who produces shows on Broadway two weeks ago and he absolutely HATES it! So horses for courses, as ever...

I quite like "Turning" and its fab vocal arrangement. It does precisely nothing though, bar moving the timeline on a good few years - nothing that couldn't be rectified by yet a few more silvery haired wigs.
"Beggars At The Feast" is clearly a crowd pleaser but I think it comes too close to the end and lightens the mood a little too much. I'm actually not all that keen on how bawdy the Thénardiers generally are in the musical. They're much more sinister in the book and probably the only genuine villains of the piece. That really gets lots in the musical.
This has motivated me to read the book, i've read it when i was young but the version was for kids and removed a good chunk of the original material. i bought a copy two years ago but haven't gotten around to reading it yet.
Ooh, there's now been an actual bit of interesting casting on this. I was a bit scared we might end up with Nick Jonas for Marius, but mercifully not -
Somebody similarly ace to play Eponine PLEASE. Can Dame Keira Knightley sing? I bet she'd look delightful in a hat and raincoat.Originally Posted by Deadline

Oh oh actually FUCK OFF KEIRA, i want Melanie Laurent out of Inglorious Basterdsand Ewan McGregor super injunctionsto be Eponine.
She can sing AND is actually french, though she'd probably have to put on RP English for this.
MAKE IT SO, FILM PEOPLE
I have agreed to play the title role of Les in this
I didn't think, I just posted
Sacah Baron Cohen will play Monsieur Thenardier and apparently Lea Michelle has auditioned for Eponine.
According to broadway world, Amanda Seyfried and, oh god in heaven WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN US, Taylor Swift with her dull dead eyes and alien forehead will be playing Eponine![]()

DELETE THIS THREAD
Rather those than LEA FUCKING MICHELE
Also, I'm impressed that this will reportedly feature LIVE SINGING throughout. Aaron Tveit, who is playing Enjolras, is amazing btw
TP you'll know him from Next to Normal![]()

Lea Michele would have been amazing.
Live singing? Uh oh... doesn't that, like, NEVER work in screen musicals?
I think Amanda Syfreid is pretty good actually but Taylor Swift has never looked natural to me, she's more of a plastic doll.
I can't remember seeing one before?!Originally Posted by RobotBoy

Live singing means that they, what - sing each time they do a take and don't lip synch along to a studio done backing track?!
Blimey. That could be interesting.
Assuming they'll still tart it up in post, i imagine it will give things a bit more oomph/realism.
The only musical movie with live singing I know of is 'At Long Last Love' which was one of the most notorious box office bombs of the seventies.
Apparently Taylor Swift WON'T be Eponine after all. The role has gone to Samantha Barks from I'd Do Anything
The ISLE OF SAM (not to mention Sild) will be thrilled![]()
Ooh
1. HOORAY she's not Taylor Swift
2. She's rather pretty
3. Uh oh, she'd better have got better at singing this song. Not keen on the last two minutes or so AT ALL.
But point 1 is most important, so i'm pleased.
Is she American?
A normal person must
Dismiss you with disgust
And weep for those who trusted you.
Turnerprize will doubtless be excited to learn that Eurovision icon and the original Éponine Frances Ruffelle has also joined the cast as "the most fabulous whore in the production".
I hope she gets to hum a few bars of We Will Beef Wee.

This is being filmed in my hometown, DON'T YOU KNOW, and loads of my friends have got roles as extras. My nephew has been shortlisted for a "small speaking part" too![]()
It's been too long, it's been too long...
YUCK YUCK YUCK YUCK YUCK YUCK
Least. Appealing. Cast. Ever.
Oh good, so Taylor Swift isn't actually doing it?
