Oh yes the album is good, don't get me wrong. Their release policy is just so disappointing
Will the US pressing still include the tracklist error![]()

It's been too long, it's been too long...
It's SUCH a shame. They're so good to their fans in terms of what they put out and you really couldn't wish for a nicer bunch of people (apparently).
But the relentless and utterly baffling non-stop rereleases - now going back DECADES - really do leave an incredibly bad taste in my mouth. I love their stuff and have happily forked out LOADS for their music and concerts over the years. But the way they play their fans really is souring the whole deal for me![]()
See, I'm happy for a well done deluxe edition years down the line- and theirs have been exemplary for the most part- and getting remastered versions of my favourite albums is worth the extra cost alone, without the liner notes and the extra songs and the unreleased vault clearing...
But it's just SHITE when stuff is only made exclusive to certain places (which I'm generally lucky with as Saint Etienne are very UK focused for the most part) and even worse when they have these ridiculous systems (the new concert you can buy 1 copy prior to the gig each and then after the gig as many more as you like of the remaining stock- it's basically just ENCOURAGING people to hit ebay!). I also hate the "Super Deluxe Edition" thing with recent albums, particularly when I've forked out £40 for the MEGAUBERDELUXENOREALLYTHISISTHEBESTONE just about four months ago, only for it to be superseded...
It's been too long, it's been too long...
True. The Pet Shop Boys always struck me as a glorious example of this - release tons of stuff but make it easily downloadable if that's your bag... why NOT?!
I've loved Saint Etienne since Foxbase Alpha but spent forever pre-internet trying to work out where I could get more stuff from them. I had the money, I had the will... but seemingly, they just didn't care.
The very fact that I can't get a sensible discography of them anywhere really did leave me to give up bar the major releases a few years ago. And that really did MASSIVELY pain me as they're so far up my street it's not funny. It just started to feel all so calculated rather than the result of evil record company shenanigans that it really did spoil the party for me. Oy VEY![]()
I just saw the email about this special edition... what an irritating state of affairs. Telling us all how 'bleeding good' it all is doesn't make things any better.
The standard deluxe edition is now £3 in the latest HMV sale.
Are the new tracks for America online yet?
.
I believe they're on youtube etc. I'm waiting for my copy to arrive so have been holding out from listening...
It's been too long, it's been too long...
Downloaded it then and it's very good, some instrumentals obviously but there are really quite a few strong tracks that could easily have made the album. . I'm sure all of you will love "solid gold"
.
So my "More Words and Music" appeared a couple of days back and though I've only played it a couple of times, I quite like it- "Solid Gold" being the standout for me too, really should have been on the album proper. I can't quite believe how much music they've thrown out this year, but this LOVELY little interview suggests why...

I quite like this guy at the quietus- he did a good interview with Kylie a few weeks ago as well that I rather ENJOYED...

"Solid Gold" is 100% certified classic SE down to that glorified demo sound. PERFECT.
like if you're still listening to this album in 2013!
l'm like a dog to get you
I've just popped on Haunted Jukebox after a quick whirl of Sylvie Girl.
Reflected onto the wet pavement, can you see what I see?
This is one of the very few records that hasn't left my mp3 player since it came out. In hindsight, I think it's one of their best.
Tonight is one of those tracks that leave you so dumbfounded you don't know what else to do but keep it on repeat. It's magical.

It's their second best album for me, which is certainly not FAINT PRAISE. The very best stuff is just GLORIOUS...
Ignoring all the myriad bonus tracks, bsides etc, I think my final rank will be:
1. Heading For The Fair
2. When I Was Seventeen
3. DJ
4. Tonight
5. Last Days of Disco
6. I Threw It All Away
7. Twenty Five Years
8. I've Got Your Music
9. Popular
10. Over The Border
11.Record Doctor
12.Answer Song
13.Haunted Jukebox
Add in the rest of the tracks and I tell you, "Solid Gold" is right up near the top, at the very least.
Whilst on the subject of Saint Etienne, apparently they've been writing in Sweden and are taking a "semi sabbatical" this year (hardly surprising given their usual strike rate), which means hopefully a christmas gig or two and a new album in 2014![]()
