The way Kvitova played, now that's someone I might think about getting excited about. Serve was really good and in the second set she was hitting winners so freely left, right and centre.

Kanepi is playing this beautifully. Going to be very interesting to see what she can do this year.

Kanepi def. Danielle Anotoxfa (THE LEGEND LIVES ON) 62 61.

Kanepi was ranked 34 starting the week, won Brisbane. Deja-vu, anyone?

Kanepi and Kvitova play quite similarly I think - but obviously Kvitova is like a mirror image with her leftie play.

Pennetta/Zheng final in Auckland has been put back to tonight (our time) - rained off completely yesterday. Auckland has had terrible weather all week!

YAY for Kanepi! I think she's been a bit of an underachiever but hopefully she can reach her max this year. She's the same age as Sveta. Speaking of Sveta - the Sexy Sveta Reneissance 2012 seems to have fallen flat on its face

Watson has made it through qualifying in Hobart, beating Barrois 4-6 7-5 7-6(1). She now faces Pironkova in the 1st round. In an annoying twist of fate, it turns out that Watson and Barrois fought it out for nearly 3 hours today for absolutely nothing, as Barrois has made it through as a LL and has arguably the better draw, against WC Sacha Jones. I say arguably because Pironkova continues to be ABSOLUTE GARBAGE on anything apart from grass right?

It makes sense for all the players who reached the later stages of the previous week's tournaments to not play this week as well, so not surprised to see so many retirements.

I understand it with Pennetta and Jay Z, too but the Clijsters, Williams, Sharapova and Lisicki problems for example are slightly worrying this early in the season.

Funny after saying about Watson and Barrois, coming through such a mammoth match and then both qualifying, for Dulgheru and Arvidsson it's even more weird:

Arvidsson was made to work particularly hard in the final round of qualies, battling three hours and 24 minutes to defeat Alexandra Dulgheru, 67(6) 76(2) 75 - the Swede had to come back from several deficits, including 1-4 in the second set (saving a match point at 5-6) and 3-5 in the third set. And in an almost comedic twist, after a pair of main draw withdrawals, Dulgheru would get into the main draw and get Arvidsson again in the first round.

"I was having lunch when we found out I was a lucky loser. We were joking that I would play Sofia again," Dulgheru said. "The WTA supervisor came by and told me we were playing each other again. We thought he was joking, that it could never be true! I couldn't get my head around it, and my coach was in disbelief too - it can't have happened too often before. Sofia and I said we need to go easy on each other this time! I'm also playing doubles against her tomorrow, so two more matches against the same opponent. We will be sick of each other!"

Pironkova beat Watson in a marathon 7-6(10) 3-6 7-6(2) - Heather had 2 match points in the final set and was 5-2 up... She really needs to get through that mental block. She's almost as bad as Keothavong.

Guys - WTA tour in da house.

    Wozniacki def. Civbulkova 75 16 64.

Cibulkova lead 4-0 in the 3rd set. But overall it was a total shit-show from Wozniacki, a few games in the first set aside. Cibulkova's brain just died in the third set. Complete blackout.

By the way, Kvitova can take the #1 ranking next week if she wins Sydney

Kvitova, who is currently ranked No.2 but would rise to No.1 by winning this tournament

Kvitova was PATCHY against Dulgheru, we'll see about her winning Sydney.

Jelena obviously had OTHER things on her mind when she played Azarenka (who was quite good admittedly) and Petkovic's mare against Radwanska keeps up.

Anyways, it's nice to see a tournament with so many Top10 players goes according to seeds in the majority for once in a while. 6 of the 8 quarterfinalists are Top10 players, four of them being in the WTA Top5. That's quite decent.

And quite a strong start for Hantuchova in Australia. Brisbane finals, now at least a QF in a draw as illlustrous as Sydney's. Not bad.

In the lower back. Which is just about the shittiest place ever. I think there are more players with back injuries born between 86 and 88 than there are WITHOUT.
