shocked Being Human - series 4

This is back soon, with a (nearly) all-new cast:

Toby Whithouse has written a thing introducing the new series...

Every year we set ourselves the task of creating something bigger and bolder and better than anything that’s happened before. We knew this year was going to be especially tough because of the various cast changes. Not only would it be our first series without Aiden, but Russell had decided that series 4 would be his last, and Sinead had decided that her Being Human journey had come to an end after series 3. The mountain before us seemed even higher than usual.

But once we’d stopped rocking and shaking, we saw Series 4 as an opportunity: we could invent new characters, expand the show in different directions, create new worlds and monsters and heroes, and add new layers to the overarching Being Human mythology. Suddenly Series 4 was a genuinely thrilling prospect.

But the essential DNA of show remains the same. Recently I found the pitch document I wrote for series 1. This was the opening paragraph:

“We’re the stuff of nightmares. And we’re your only hope. George, Mitchell and Annie yearn for their vanished humanity. Being Human is a unique twist on the aspirational drama, as the things Mitchell, Annie and George struggle to achieve are so common place and normal to us, yet impossibly remote to them. And the desire to be accepted by their old lost race will drive them to acts of immense courage, and foolish hazard. Our heroes may be like characters that have tumbled from the pages of a book, but their problems are always recognisably human, and the stories will strike a balance between the supernatural and the domestic.”

This was for our and the BBC’s eyes only. Hence the rather self-conscious ‘pitch-speak’ (and the odd contradiction. The characters are remote from us, yet share our problems? What? Shut up, Toby. Seriously. Stick to dialogue and stage directions.)

Obviously, a lot can happen in four years. But looking back at it now, I’m relieved to see that those words are still relevant for a show that has a new cast, a new location, an American reincarnation and expanded beyond our wildest dreams.

As ever, Being Human lives or dies on the strength of the characters and the cast, and that’s why I think this series is our strongest yet.

Damien Molony joins the team as Hal. Hand on heart, I think he’s one of the most exciting and versatile actors of his generation. Watching his performance grow over the filming was a joy.

Then there’s Michael Socha. Promoted from semi-regular to lead. If you thought he was good in series 3, wait till you see what he does in series 4. Michael will break your heart this year.

And of course beautiful Lenora. Our star. The heart of the show. This year she gives a truly breathtaking performance. One of my favourite moments of 2011 was the first full screening of episode 2, when she left us all with our jaws on our chests.

As I said earlier, Russell and Sinead felt it was time to hang up the wolf ears and fangs. We were obviously very disappointed to see them go, but as I’ve always said about our cast, you can’t hang on to actors that good forever.

I’m reminded of a moment in series 2, when George is talking about moving in with his girlfriend. Annie is devastated, but Mitchell knows that there’s not much they can do. Then Annie leans across to Mitchell and mutters: “We have a cage…" Believe me, the thought did occur to us too.

So what have you got to look forward to?

We introduce you to a new type of supernatural creature (thank you, Wikipedia); there are some stunning guest appearances from Alex Jennings, Mark Gatiss, James Lance, Mark Williams, Amanda Abbingdon, Craig Roberts (reprising his role as teenage vampire Adam), Selina Griffiths and Ellie Kendrick; there’s a genuinely shocking death, and we take you to somewhere we’ve never been to before.

News of Russell’s departure – and to Aidan’s before that – was greeted with rather wearying predictions that the show was now ‘over’. But I write this a few days after seeing the finished cut of episode 8, and I’m happy to report that it’s never been in ruder health.

The new cast, the crew and directors and the other writers have pulled off something extraordinary and completely reinvigorated the show. I hope you’ll agree, rumours of Being Human’s death have been greatly exaggerated.
And there's a little prequel video here.

What do you think? Can a show bounce back from losing three quarters of its lead actors in one go? I'm obviously going to be wearing a black armband all year if they kill off George

Series Three was brilliant. Total high-octane madness, especially those last few episodes.

It's going to be undeniably rather DIFFERENT - I just hope they don't suffer the new character syndrome, at least Robson Green's werewolf son is vaguely familiar (and they haven't brought in Angsty Teen Vampire). At least we'll get a few Russell Tovey ACTING/arse shots, is he going for the entire series then?

What kind of supernatural beings are there left? Obviously they've done vampire, ghost and werewolf, zombie too, so what else? Elf? TORGO?

I love Michael Socha (and his wonderful sister) but the last series was just a mess. I'm afraid I'M OUT.

I thought it was still very good, but it definitely went a bit MENTAL and I have no idea where they're going to take it next. I'll give it a go but some of the changes will be a bit hard to get used to, particularly

Spoiler: it's not really a spoiler but i'll PLAY BALL

Re: the rest, i'll be very surprised if this can survive shedding two thirds of the main cast (though with them still there it would probably be on its last legs, so this is not necessarilly a bad thing). I'm obviously over the moon that Tovey's fucking off, but replacing both him and Mitchell so overtly from the outset does seem a littl bit OFF. And i can't really remember Michael Socha / his character doing a thing last series that demanded he was promoted to lead character. If anyone did do that then it was surely Gwen from Gavin and Stacey as a surburban vampire swinger BRING HER BACK

Also, i went from loving Annie more than virtually anyone else on tv to finding her PROPER annoying last year. So of the starting cast i'm only really interested in new man right now, and that's because i know NOTHING of him. Though i believe our own VoR saw him in a play he did last year so maybe he can judge.

Still though, i'll give it a go. I did think last year's was a big step up from series 2.

I missed Series 3 first time around so I'm recording the middle of the night repeats on BBC3 at the moment. Only seen five episodes so far but I think it is much better than the second lot, certainly more fun. Nina is still annoying though.

There's a story today about the BBC having less of a focus on BBC3 drama in the future due to budget cuts; apparently only one show will be recommissioned out of Being Human, Lip Service and The Fades

Depending on how Season Four goes, I feel like I potentially find myself putting my FULL BRUNT behind the muff-diving expose of Lip Service. It's been hard enough losing the Candy Bar Girls.

The Fades didn't really take off and seemed like a bit of a strained mess to me, but i know its got its fans.

What a shame they have to cut back at all. It also means that there's going to be no drama on BBC4 whatsoever now. And Something for the Weekend DEAD

Oh, I didn't mind The Fades. I think a dark psychological sci-fi THRILLA was definitely required, the execution of it was a bit off but the first couple of episodes were great, atmospheric stuff. More of the cute main guy and less of the JOCULAH BANTAH between him and Posh Kenneth and I'd be semi-on board.

I like that. Much more lowkey than the ones for s2 and s3, but not in a bad way.

It looks like it might be shifting a bit back to the lighter tone of the first series, which i'd definitely welcome. I'm assuming it's back two weeks tonight? I'm suddenly more excited.

    shocked

Now THAT is how you reboot a show! I thought it was pretty brilliant - I especially liked the setup with the new vampire, I thought we were going to have him come in evil and have Annie make him become nicer which would've been tedious. I'm also glad they're waiting a week before having him meet the rest, too much was happening in this episode... I'd Fifties ghost woman to stick around too based on this episode, but I have a feeling she'll go through her door next week.

The more I think about it they'd probably done all they could with George, so probably best to bin him now (I will miss his lovely bum, but knowing Tovey it won't be long until it pops up elsewhere ). I think Tom will work out quite well as a main character, I like how he's a bit THICK.

The flashforward stuff was a real headfuck, I'm reserving judgment until I see where they're taking it. It's sometimes a bit of a mistake to spell out what's going to happen in such a massive way, but the ghost woman at the end made it sound like she was going into the past (can they do that now?) so WHO KNOWS.

Yeah i thought it was BRILLIANT. There was a marvellous new energy and confidence to it, and there were so many nice moments i thought. The bit with ghost social worker was probably my favourite, and i loved the stuff with the alternative Ghost/Vampire/Werewolf house. The only bit i didn't like was Tovey being (imo) more rubbish than ever, so HOORAY at the ending.

I agree that it felt like the best way to reboot something. I already love new vampire man (which i was sort of expecting not to because he's currently a BIT SHIT as the lead in something at the National) and i also liked Tom more than ever. I hope Annie will benefit from the new dynamic. WELL DONE SERIES 4 SO FAR, you no longer feel like a show that's run out of steam.

    *goes to shit next week*

Oh and yeah, WHAT was all that with futuregirl? Did everyone else assume she was Eve grown up and feel a bit clever and then be all WTF at the end? Maybe she still is though.

Loved it too, especially because of Michael Socha/Kelly from Misfits.

It seems to be that Annie's hair is proportional to how good the series is. Those TIGHT SHIRLEY TEMPLE CURLS last series highlights this.

I wasn't paying full attention. Future Woman is George and Nina's baby right? Also POOR DIED OFFSCREEN NINA. That's what you get for going to Lip Service.

I didn't like the future bits at all but otherwise I thought this was very good. The new vampire seems interesting (and he also is better looking than the promo pics suggested so WIN WIN), though I hope they dispatch his wolf and ghost quite quickly.

    Glad you're on board love

The future woman seems to be the baby, but it's still a bit up in the air. She's either coming back in time to kill herself as a baby, or there's some OTHER baby in the future that she's going to kill. Either way she's NOT TOO FOND of babies.

    4. Gilbert the Eighties goth
    5. Fifties woman from the other night

Just caught up on this, BLIMEY. It was really surprisingly good, the pacing was superb and it seemed like EVERYONE was ACTING NOW. The future bits were totally confusing though, bit of an unexpected twist but it should be good to see where they take it. I think knowing Russell Tovey was off softened the blow - I do agree that George had kind of fulfilled his mileage.

I hope we get more Stacey Slater this series too. N.B. Michael Socha was WELFIT this episode.

Ep 2 really was terrific! Less big epic picture, less opportunities to ACT NOW, and several hilarious moments. The ghost bitch-fight was especially good.

I'm so glad George, Mitchell and Nina are gone.

I really enjoyed the second episode. The comedy moments were a welcome relief and I liked that it all felt a bit smaller after the dramatics of the previous week. Annie basically owned the hour I thought, but I'm looking forward to seeing how Hal's storyline unfolds over the series.

There maybe wasn't *quite* enough plot for the episode, and i'm not sure Michaela fully worked (though good attempt at the shoreditchy deluded artist SORT), but i still enjoyed tonight's. I liked that they killed police vampire as well, because he was starting to get on my nob and was basically just a less good Herrick.

Loving Hal and Tom too. Also, Hal has a really nice neck. And i don't normally get excited about necks. I totally get whoever converted him.

Thanks James Lance for being a FUCKING BLIGHT on Being Human for sixty minutes (apart from the Boney M dancing, I'll give him that). Hal and Tom are working out very well though.

I literally could not work out what i thought of him, nor the episode really. I'd probably say weaker than the past three, but certainly not a blot on this year's series or anything. I laughed at the fake gay scene and was pretty much gripped throughout. I liked the twist with the blood too.

I was groaning when i heard that Craig Roberts was coming back for a week (based on Submarine and his episode last year, I REALLY HATE CRAIG ROBERTS) but the fact that he's seemingly shacked up with Janet from The Smoking Room is greatly appreciated. I also like how the Box Tunnel Murders is still having realistic-ish repercussions. Most shows wouldn't have mentioned it past series 2.

I hope the Doctor lady Cutler bit at the end of this week's show comes back as a vampire, i liked her a lot.

    I loved Janet.

Have people stuck with this? In comparison to the brilliant opening weeks it's fizzled and faltered a little bit for me, but not in a major way and it's definitely my favourite series since the first year. I actually think it would have been as strong as that if it had been six episodes instead of eight, and there'd been slightly less focus on the arc (which i like but have also found QUITE HOKEY with all this scriptures, nemesis, war child business).

My only real criticism is that the art direction / general design has been REALLY SHIT every now and then. Some of the locations have reminded me of a student film (Cutler's office), and some of the props just jarringly dreadful (the poster of dictator Hal from the future, and the tv news broadcast of Janet talking outside the house that Adam saw in the bar were particularly jarring for me). It's looked amateur/cheap in places when i'm not sure it has before. None of this is a dealbreaker though. I won't be heartbroken if it does get axed, but it's done more than enough to beat the odds and justify another series i think. The two newspaper reviews i've read for tonight's have both appealed to BBC3 for another series, which i've not really seen before.

ALSO, does anyone else get the feeling that Annie will leave tonight and, if series 5 happens, be replaced by Sassy Scottish Girl Ghost next year? I'd be a bit sad about that i think. I've loved Annie again this year - her accidentally killing off that old perve was a highlight for me. She needs a proper story if she stays though.

YES I very much got that impression last week. Hopefully Annie will stick around but I think the new girl would be acceptable if she has other things to do. I agree that the series has maybe dipped just a bit, but how much I've enjoyed the new characters (and Annie) has made up for the future/war child bollocks and Anne bloody Frank of course.

    grin

I do appreciate your dislike of Anne Frank Girl also.

You'd think that being axed for being rubbish (i assume) by Upstairs Downstairs - a show that is also rubbish and keeps KEELEY HAWES in employment - would have finished her off, acting-wise.

so whilst I did enjoy the last episode I was a bit confused by the end! I dont want to spoil it but did anyone else think that Annie and the baby hadnt actually died and that Eve was fading not because she was dead, but because the adult Eve that had to go back in time didnt need to exist anymore? It took me until the end titles to realise that she had in fact been replaced by the annoying scottish bird. The whole thing really wasnt very clear at all, surely if Eve and Annie ARE both dead now, we need something of a reaction from the others

a 5th series is on the cards although what have the ratings been? I dont know anyone else that watches it. Hal is reason enough for me to continue despite the above confusion, although I would happily watch him in any programme come to think of it

Averaging just under 1m this series I believe, which is alright for BBC Three (I think?)

I really enjoyed the episode, but I'd have liked a bit more reaction to Annie leaving (the fact there wasn't any from the others makes me pretty sure she'll be popping back a few times next year). I'm still bloody surprised that they WENT THERE with her exit really... I mean her big heroic moment was killing a baby with a suicide bomb Mark Gatiss was fabulous too, as a horror geek you could tell he was having a lot of fun with that part - I'd be well up for him being resurrected next year if they want to go down that road again.
