I don't think this was ever guaranteed ANYWAY, but apparently Sony no longer want to fund a new Steps album. I don't think they'd actually have any trouble finding a new, smaller record label, being on a major right now would probably set them up for a fail because the expectations would be relatively high I'd have thought.
All the same, 'The Ultimate Collection' went to #1 and the tour's sold well, so why decide NOW to back out of a deal?
Steps are reportedly no longer guaranteed to record an album of new material after Sony reneged on its initial deal.
The 'Tragedy' group - individually known as Claire Richards, Ian 'H' Watkins, Lisa Scott-Lee, Lee Latchford-Evans and Faye Tozer - reformed last year with the intention of embarking upon a UK arena tour and releasing a fourth studio LP.
However, the five-piece are believed to have been told by Sony that they do not want to fund another record, forcing them to shop around for a new label.
"They've instructed their management to widen their ideas and talk to other labels," a source told the Sunday Mirror. "Universal is top of their list.
"They want a new album off the ground. It's a case of finding the right label to take the risk."
An Ultimate Collection of Steps' greatest hits topped the UK album chart back in October.
The band are currently filming a second series of their Sky Living documentary.

I hope Lisa's reaction to them not being guaranteed a new album will be the MAIN TOPIC of an entire episode
"We've had a number of setbacks and.."
*looks to sky and handfans air into face to dry tears* "Sorry I need a moment"
"It's not been easy to get this far and now after all this year to be told something like this.."
*presses out another tear!*
Nothing to see here MOVE ALONG.
Surely this is NONSENSE!? They saw how well a LOAD OF OLD TAT did last year and for the first time in a long time, Steps have been BIG NEWS again. Why WOULDN'T a label take a risk?! It's MADNESS!
It's been too long, it's been too long...
I didn't know there was another Living series planned - yay.
Wasn't it rumoured that two new series had been ordered? One following the tour and another for later in the year following the release of a new album.
Do Sony have any ties to other labels? This to me would be a way of creating drama in the show whilst Sony sign them back up to another label they're involved with. Surely after the success Sony aren't that stupid to throw the opportunity away.
Yeah, I mean if the reunion hadn't gone down well then fair enough - but considering a GH which essentially was just a re-issue managed to hit #1 and shift around 200k, a new album isn't a terribly risky thing?
Well they actually have to shell out money for a NEW ALBUM as opposed to a CYNICAL CASH-IN REPACKAGE and to be honest NOSTALGIA sells, but an ALL-NEW Steps album? NOT SO SURE THERE
And oh...
Oh HOW MANY YEARS
Is it NOW Maurice?
This has ruined my day.
Won't somebody out there hear my SOS...
