    The Cabin In The Woods

New film from Joss Whedon (NOT THAT ONE). This has been picking up some amount of buzz, apparently it's best to see it with NO prior knowledge.

Starring OH CHRIS Mk 2. I CANNOT WAIT.

2012 is really Joss Whedon's year with this, The Avengers and Much Ado About Nothing, this looks pretty good and of course Thor <3

Looks unbelievably SHIT. I thought those trashy, shlocky, thrill-free 'horror' films that plagued the 00s had fallen out of vogue now. Shame.

    Erm, I don't think that's what it's about.

I'd say it looks more like a sci-fi thriller mixed with some well-worn horror 'tropes' - I'm interested based on the trailer. The fact it's a co-write rather than Joss Whedon on his own actually makes me more excited, because I've found myself getting a bit bored with his trademark snarky dialogue in everything (though having said that, Drew Goddard made his name writing Buffy episodes so he might not be the one to reign Whedon in on that front )

This is supposed to be a Scream-style subversion of the genre, and judging from the trailer and posters, the idea seems to be that every cabin-in-the-wood horror flick was manipulated behind the scenes by this hunter like organisation, hence where the clichés come from like 'If an old man warns you not to go there... make fun of him.' 'if something is chasing you... split up.' etc. etc.

I have been waiting for this for what feels like forever, and I'm disappointed that it looks SO SHIT, it reminds me of a more high-tech version of Severance mixed with Cabin Fever. The early buzz seems incredibly positive though, so I'm holding out hope I will be pleasantly surprised.

I thought it was GREAT (with some reservations).

The central premise/twist is fantastic. Jark you have EMBARRASSED YOURSELF in this thread.

OK guys think of Jark's synopsis of the plot and it's the EXACT OPPOSITE. I'm sure he'll bump this thread when he downloads a copy in 5 years time.

I LOVED it and had no clue where it was heading. I urge anyone who's planning to see it to avoid all spoilers.

There will be more discussion once some others have seen it

Completely agreed. Truly brilliant. It's so difficult to discuss it without giving too much away, but it really is a fabulous twist on the genre. It's not without issues, but they're all minor. I LOVED the cast too, which is pretty rare in a film like this. I thought all the 'teens' played their roles straight enough to feel appropriate, but with a slight knowing glint in their eyes. Blondiely , in particular, was brilliant.

I think it's not going to be for everyone, and I certainly don't think it's going to attract the universal praise that Scream did - they're hard to compare - but I think this is going to entertain a lot of people. I had NO idea where it was going to go.

And, seriously, heed the advice and try to go to see it spoiler free.

Jark sprung to mind when I was in the cinema actually. It's only once you've seen it and it's gone a lot further than you imagine it to that you realise QUITE how wrong Jark was!

It was superb at that weird thing of making you very confident that you knew what was coming next - then completely changing it up and saying 'ha ha you were wrong'.

I thought the ending was going to be the scene on the pier so couldn't believe what happened next!

Jark COMPLETELY missing the point once again!

This was really really good... The best bit was the clever use of black comedy. Lots of social commentary in thia one, reminded me of Scream.

But I didn't like the last 5 minutes. The reveal was cool but once it went from fantasy horror to this weird sacruficial mythology thing I just thought they took it too far

Interesting ending too, given how it makes creating a franchise now very difficult...

Bradley Whitford is amazing. In fact everyone from the West Wing has been criminally underused since it ended.

Not sure how much I liked it.

Sure, it was smart enough, but I HATE zombie movies (I know it was a satire, but even so).

It reminded me of some of The Initiative stuff from Buffy.

oh my god you guys, i thought this was the BIGGEST LOAD OF SHIT i have seen ALL YEAR. i actually found it PAINFUL to watch and just prayed for it to end. it wasn't nearly as clever as it (and everyone else) thought it was. It was like they'd come up with the, admittedly, very interesting premise but just hashed out this MISH MASH of SHIT.

I am genuinely AGOG that it's getting the rave reviews it is. i know the horror genre needs a breath of fresh air but are people really that desperate that they'll take something like this?

I don't think it's the premise that's particularly clever, although it IS quite original, I thought the cleverness was more about the way it was played and how far they went with it. It was just all so surprising - the exact opposite of a typical 'cabin in the woods' type film. Like I said though, I can definitely see plenty of people falling firmly into the camp of not liking it at all.

There is so much about the movie that is generic, predictable, corny, but that's entirely the point so I think it totally works on that level... The self awareness and genre-satire gives every scene a purpose and that's the main reason why it reminded me so much of Scream

But that alone wouldn't be enough to keep me interested - I'm generally not a horror movie fan at all, I don't easily scare at the cinema and so am usually bored. But the running theme of gratuity numbing the senses I thought was brilliant. There were so many subtle references to today's attitude to movies, horror, gore etc but the one scene I remember the most is when everyone is celebrating the 'win' while that girl gets attacked in the background. I thought that was really on point...

I started off thinking it was pretty good but after about 30 mins with the zombies I was starting to dislike it, and by the end, knowing the "twist" I thought was utter crap.

    Mandy however, loved it.

This was AMAZING. I may have under-marked it with an 8 there. I was laughing all the way through. Not to spoil any part, the best bit was Richard Jenkins yelling "FUCK YOOOOU" at the monitor.

In our screening 2 people walked out at the start thinking it was the wrong movie, then walked back in a few mints later. I wonder if that's happened a few times.

I want to give this more than an eight, but it really only came alive after that pier scene which I too thought would be about the end of it. Up to that point, it just felt like it WASN'T ENOUGH. It was all too horribly knowing sometimes with the admittedly clever idea, references and control aspect of it going on and on. Once you had the idea it was a bit like, well now what? Some of it was funny - the weed smoking guy actually being likeable and hilarious and in fact ALL the characters being likeable - and some of it was interesting to watch. But I see jivafox's point, by trying to be clever it wasn't exactly subtle.

Also are we SUPPOSED to criticise the story in this? Are we ALLOWED? Yes it's all jokey and satirical, but once you knew the full thing, some of the plot was ABSURD. I refuse to allow that to be classed as the point...

THAT SAID, it was fun and of course after that pier scene the way it totally changed and the kitchen sink approach was MUCH needed and refreshing. I mean that part is worth 11 alone. All the nods and references in that bit - and the best cameo EVER - were 100% enjoyable and appreciated. Even the final bit of the story was acceptable which is ridiculous given I've just slagged off some of the plot, but somehow by that stage that bit seemed OKAY

    Anyway, 8 overall...

It's rather good, especially the last third. As a horror movie fan I got a lot of geek pleasure from that part. You're definitely right in avoiding the spoilers, though. Also, Japanese schoolgirls

Sounds like my type of film. I kinda expect a Last Exorcism like ending now.

    Horror quiz
The Exorcist or Silence of the Lambs?

Nice it seems A Lana Del Rey fan too.

    Have you seen The Shrine?

Loved it, loved it, loved it so so much. Horror is not my genre and this was so clever and i love that they stuck to the mythical idea because it couldn't have had a better resolution and for once i'm glad that a movie didn't backtrack and said you know what it's fantasy deal with it. it didn't disappoint me at all, when they first showed the trinkets and got the zombie i was sad i didn't get to see the others and then all hell broke loose.

i can see why it doesn't appeal to too many people but i love meta shit like this, it's not the same thing but it has the same mindset that a show like Community has. The cameo at the end was so were the Japanese girls and "he's got a husband bulge".

This was amazing obviously. I knew it wasn't going to be the generic film you'd expect from the title, but I had no idea it was going to go the way it did, and I was very pleasantly surprised.

My sister loves horror films and watches them all behind a pillow. However, she thought this was the worst film ever. She didn't find this scary at all, just ridiculous. At first she thought it was some sort of Scary Movie. She thought it was so bad I had to see it.

I actually kind of enjoyed it. The special effects were pretty bad at the end, but I actually loved the twist. Did not see that coming.
What's confusing? We just find the heart of the prison and the dragon who speaks without walls, and we're home free. Simple.
