I'm in the same scenario and could be SWAYED by a new Macbook but I wonder if anyone knew the exact education pricing?
Is this the PORN THREAD? This evening i have been most saddened by the actual real life death of Sean from CorbinFisher. He was my favourite
On topic: you won't regret a mac VoR. I know nothing about the insides of laptops, but i do know that my macbook pro is the best thing i've ever typed upon by FAR. They're definitely worth the investment i think. My first one outlived any of my previous laptops by nearly a year (and was SO MUCH LOVELIER), and then only died because i let a bath overflow onto it for ten minutes. It was still in great health.

SAY WHAT?
How did he die?![]()
NEW QUESTION: How do Mac users get around the Microsoft Office issue?
In my job I'm constantly sending and receiving word documents so I'm going to need it. But the Office for Mac package has some TERRIBLE reviews on the Apple homepage (plus again, £200?! FUCK OFF!)
I didn't think Word was THAT bad.
Did you just fork out for it then?
I can't believe such a basic programme costs so much. I suppose everyone needs it though. BASTARDS.
care to link to the reviews? I've never had a problem with it, I only use Word and that works fine for me. I've got a pirated version of the 2011 build somewhere that I use if you're interested![]()
I am
I only really need Word and maybe Excel myself.
Reviews here, though I suppose you're always going to get a negative balance in stuff like this: http://store.apple.com/uk/product/H2...-business-2011
you got dropbox? get it if not and PM me your details
I have no problem with Word at all. It's pretty speedy and does the job well and really you don't have an alternative do you?

I got Word for my Mac from the student deals website (you don't actually NEED to be a student, I'd graduated at that point) for about £30 and whilst I admittedly don't use it in THAT much depth, it works just FINE
Refresh rumoured to be coming end of April. Current models low in stock in the supply chain. I really would hold on VoR but of course if you keep waiting you could be waiting forever.

Why use Microsoft office when you coudl just as well TeX everything?![]()
Nothing to see here MOVE ALONG.
VoR - do you know anybody doing a computing course at Uni? The spawn gets loads of programmes free through her course and can download them up to 50 times each. I know that MS Office is one of them as well as Windows 7 Professional.

Has anyone had any experience/luck with refurbished Macs? I'm thinking it might be a good way of saving a couple £100s, especially if I'm going to then buy Office on top.
Office is OK for mac. At the end of the day its Microsoft product, so its a bit rapey sometimes, but what can you do.

Thanks BR! Yeah, I'm thinking of going for it. A friend of mine just got an refurbished iPad and she said you wouldn't know. At the end of the day they can't sell you a dodgy product WITHOUT warranty surely?
Re: Office, I only really want Word to be honest. I don't even use it that much, but computer would feel somewhat naked without it. Plus it helps if/when people need to send attachments.

One of my clients sells loads of them on Ebay and they're very reasonably priced, he never gets any returned. I got a Macbook Pro for the spawn for £825 from him, the only thing wrong with it was a tiny dent where the ethernet cable goes, not enough to stop a cable going in or out.

Sounds good! I haven't looked too thoroughly yet, so don't know if exactly what I want will be available (and if it's not, I'd probably rather pay full price), but saving £200 quid for the sake of a small dent if definitely worth it in my eyes.
It was a £1500-new one, obviously the £825 was mates rates so he made no profit on it but it looked brand new, I was gobsmacked when he brought it round. He would've put it up on ebay for £1100 starting price so he did us a pretty big favour. I think if you buy a refurbished one from Apple you get a warranty with it.

I'm still waiting for my credit card to come through. It's all approved, it's just a RIGHT FAFF getting everything as you have to wait for them to post out some forms which you then have to send back, then they send you your PIN number and then finally the card.
I guess I might wait until the end of the month anyway and see if this refresh Percypig mentioned happens. Another week won't make any difference at this point.
His current stuff is here

I could just give him every penny I own. He just sells stuff I like. Swine!

I keep thinking this thread is about VoR trying to get himself a man.
Reflected onto the wet pavement, can you see what I see?
I think you're after a Pro? If so...
As noted by AppleInsider, third-party resellers are beginning to experience shortages of Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro, hinting that a refresh may be coming in the near future.
Among those resellers reflecting backorder status on some of the current 15-inch MacBook Pros is J&R, which is now sold out of both the 2.2GHz model, which is listed as "out of stock," and the 2.4GHz variety, which is currently advertised as "on order."
In addition, Best Buy has also stopped accepting online orders for the 2.4GHz model for home delivery. The 15-inch notebook is still available on a store-by-store basis, however a quick check of individual store inventory in cities such as Chicago and Austin similarly indicate that between 40 and 60 percent of those shops are similarly reflecting stock outs.
Apple's own online store is not yet showing any delays in fulfilling orders, but the company prioritizes its own distribution channels over third-party resellers, meaning that shortages generally show up first at those resellers.
Apple has been said to be ramping up production of new 15-inch MacBook Pro models carrying a thinner form factor, with Intel's rumored April 29 debut of quad-core mobile Ivy Bridge processors undoubtedly driving that timeline.
With dual-core Ivy Bridge processors not launching until early June, it seems that Apple may not be launching upgraded 13-inch MacBook Pro models until that time. As for the 17-inch MacBook Pro, AppleInsider had previously claimed that Apple was likely to use a staggered rollout of the new MacBook Pro form factor, with the 17-inch model not receiving an update until perhaps several months after the smaller models.
I got a 15-inch macbook pro (2.53 GHz Intel Core i5). It never let me down. Though I dislike the fact that I can't play games without a bootcamp partition. Which is a good thing for more focus on school though.
Intel have just launched their new processors for laptops (Ivy Bridge) but there's nothing moving in the supply chain yet. To be honest any extra power you receive is unlikely to be of any use for what you want to do with the laptop (unless video editing is your bag), it's just that you'll be likely kicking yourself if a new one appears 2 weeks down the line.
