    SINGLES

Rita Ora is smashing her way through 2012 as the London-based rising star today scores her second Official Number 1 single of the year with R.I.P FT Tinie Tempah. The track, which was written by Canadian rapper Drake and produced by electronic supremos Chase & Status, was released this week and has already broken the 100,000 sales barrier, toppling reigning queen Tulisa to rack up nearly 105,000 sales.

Not only has the 21-year-old singer already been snapped up by Jay Z for his label Roc Nation, 2012 is now rapidly becoming a breakthrough year for Rita as she today also becomes the first artist to bag two Official Number 1 Awards - the new award created by the Official Charts Company in the 60th year of the Official Singles Chart. The brushed aluminium trophy is now presented by the Official Charts Company in partnership with Radio 1’s Official Chart to each new single to achieve Number 1 status.

Rita is pictured adding her second Official Number 1 Award to her mantelpiece after also providing the vocals for DJ Fresh’s chart-topping smash hit Hot Right Now back in February, which is currently the fastest selling single of 2012 so far.

R.I.P is the first UK release to be lifted from Rita’s upcoming, as-yet-untitled debut album, which will be released later this year. The Kosovan-born singer is touring with DJ Fresh on his UK tour throughout May.
Tulisa slips into second place with Young, while former chart-topper Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe is at Number 3. Alex Clare’s Too Close (4) continues to climb up the Official Singles Chart since its release five weeks ago, while Fun and Janelle Monae’s We Are Young slips from Number 3 to Number 5.

    New entries and high climbers

With guest vocals from chart throb Justin Bieber, Far East Movement score their third Top 20 single with Live My Life which is new in at Number 7, while Matrix & Futurebound FT Luke Bingham’s All I Know is new in at 29. Labrinth’s Express Yourself is at 34 while Bieber’s Turn To You makes an appearance at 39.

Emeli Sande’s My Kind Of Love debuts on the Official Singles Chart at Number 24 following her performance on the BBC’s hit reality TV show The Voice last weekend. The Voice is also responsible for The Temper Trap’s Sweet Disposition, which was covered by David Julien on the show, climbing 27 places to Number 26.

    ALBUMS

Keane today land their fifth consecutive Official Albums Chart Number 1, a record run beaten only by music legends The Beatles.

The East Sussex rockers, whose first three albums – 2004’s Hopes And Fears, 2006’s Under The Iron Sea and 2008’s Perfect Symmetry – and their 2010 EP, Night Train, have all debuted at the top of the Official Albums Chart. Now their fifth release Strangeland bags the top spot once again outselling its nearest competitor, Emeli Sande’s Our Version Of Events (2), by two copies to one.

The Beatles still hold the record for most consecutive Number 1s from a debut release onwards (seven albums), from 1963 album Please Please Me, through to Revolver in 1966. Robbie Williams also managed an impressive five consecutive Number 1 albums, though debut solo album Life Thru A Lens did not debut in the top spot; it climbed there the year after its release.

Following her performance on The Voice this past weekend, Emeli Sande’s Our Version Of Events climbs six places to Number 2, while Adele’s mega-selling 21 album slips one place to Number 4 and Lana Del Rey‘s Born To Die rests at 5.

Fresh from last week’s appearance on Later with Jools Holland, Richard Hawley, scores his highest ever solo chart position. The Sheffield-born singer, songwriter and producer, has this week released his seventh studio album, Standing At The Sky's Edge, debuting on the Official Albums Chart at Number 3.

    New Entries and high climbers

Keane (1), Richard Hawley (3) and The Cribs’ In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull (9) lead eight new entries on this week’s Official Albums Chart Top 40. Barbados popsters Cover Drive debut inside the Top 20 at Number 14 this weekend with their debut album Bajan Style, while Atlanta rapper B.o.B.’s new album, Strange Clouds, which features the Top 10 single So Good, is new at 30.

Scottish twins Charlie and Craig Reid, AKA The Proclaimers, are back with their first new material in almost three years. The duo’s latest album, Like Comedy today enters at 31, while seminal Irish rockers My Bloody Valentine are at Number 33 with EPs 1988-1991, which collects together three of their Creation Records EPs.

London ‘glam-folk’ dandy King Charles looks set to enter the Official Albums Chart at Number 36 with his debut album, Loveblood.

Labrinth’s Electronic Earth is this week’s highest albums climber, up 15 places to 28.

    Beastie Boys

Finally, following the untimely passing last week of hip hop pioneer Adam Yauch, fans have been paying tribute to the late Beastie Boys star by picking up some of the band’s most celebrated singles and albums. There are three re-entries for the Beastie Boys in the albums Top 200. Ill Communication (122), Licensed to Ill (136), and Paul’s Boutique (140). Over on singles there are re-entries for Intergalactic (168), (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right To Party (176) and Sabotage (196).

I'd like it if Rebecca Ferguson could overtake One Direction and have the bestselling album of that year's X Factor. Is that likely? I seem to remember Cardle and Cher Lloyd being fairly close in sales, and then her and One Direction not being too far apart either.

She's over 100k behind at the minute with just under 500k (1D are on about 610k) but I don't think they are doing any more promo for the album, whereas she is, so she may well end up outselling them.

It's been hanging around #90-100 on iTunes for a bit, don't think it ever got much higher than that though.

EDIT: It's at #82 now actually.

How pleasing that Rebecca can turn a flop single into album success though. Unlike a CERTAIN SOMEONE...

Not at all surprised at Marina - she'll need a better single than "Power and Control" to turn this around.

Really pleased at how well the My Bloody Valentine reissues have done; I never thought all three would chart and I certainly didn't expect the EP collection to be the best seller - although it has rare and unreleased material, those types of compilation rarely do as well as established canon. Hopefully this sets things up nicely for a new album later in the year.

    Singles:

12 weeks after storming to number one as featured vocalist on DJ Fresh's Hot Right Now, 21 year old Rita Ora - originally from Kosovo but now based in London - races back to the summit with R.I.P. Sounding the death knell for Tulisa's Young, which dips to number two (63,649 sales) after just a week at the top, R.I.P. sold 104,592 copies on its debut. It is the sixth biggest weekly sale of the year in a list topped by Hot Right Now's introductory week's sales of 127,998.

R.I.P boasts a multi-national writing team including an Afghan, a Canadian (rapper Drake), A Nigerian, an American, two Norwegians and two Brits (Chase & Status), and features a rap by Tinie Tempah, for whom it is the third number one hit.

Its sales increasing for the eighth week in a row, Alex Clare's debut smash Too Close climbs 5-4, shifting 58,284 copies. Originally released in March 2011 and belatedly blasted into the chart after featuring in the TV advertising campaign for Microsoft Internet Explorer, it has sold 175,664 copies in total. Clare's debut album, The Lateness Of The Hour, which came out last July, increases its sales for the seventh week in a row, despite falling 17-22. It sold 6,357 copies last week to increase its cumulative tally to 27,060.

Train's three biggest hits were released in 2001, 2010 and 2012 - and all three are in the Top 75 together for the fourth week in a row. Their latest single Drive By is their highest charting hit to date, with a 14-10-7-6 trajectory thus far, and sold 37,939 copies last week. Most rock singles are in decline from week one, but Drive By has bucked the trend, and has helped parent album California 37 to achieve a smart turnaround too. The album debuted at number 10 three weeks ago, and immediately slipped to number 29 but it recovered to number 25 last week, and now jumps to number 15 (7,954 sales). Meanwhile, Train's 2010 number 18 hit Hey Soul Sister jumps 38-25 (12,859 sales), while 2001 number 10 hit Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me) falls 68-71 (3,964 sales).

American hip-hop group Far East Movement had their first Top 20 hit in 2010, their second in 2011, and their third this week, with Justin Bieber collaboration Live My Life, which debuts at number seven (33,287 sales). It is Bieber's ninth Top 40 hit - and he also registers his 10th, with Turn To You (Mother's Day Dedication) debuting at number 39 (7,857 sales), having only been released on Friday. Mother's Day, of course, fell here on 18 March - but the track was released to mark Mother's Day in Bieber's native Canada and The USA, where it fell on 13 May.

Also new to the Top 40: All I Know (number 29, 10,955 sales) by Matrix & Futurebound feat. Luke Bingham and Express Yourself by Labrinth (number 34, 9,485 sales).

She may have passed on R.I.P., which co-writer Drake offered to her before Rita Ora, but Rihanna scores her 21st Top 10 hit, as Where Have You Been sprints 21-8 (30,149 sales).

Other singles in the Top 10 this week not mentioned elsewhere: Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe falls 2-3 (59,183 sales); Fun's We Are Young (feat. Janelle Monae) dips 3-5 (52,719 sales) and Somebody That I Used To Know recovers 10-9 (29,241 sales) for Gotye feat. Kimra.

The Voice UK and Britain's Got Talent continue to generate sales, though the latter concluded on Saturday. Among the biggest beneficiaries: Temper Trap's Sweet Disposition (53-26, 12,173 sales), Goo Goo Dolls' Iris (164-44, 6,618 sales), Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill (115-51, 6,011 sales) and Tom Petty's Free Fallin' (128-59 to beat its original 1989 peak of number 64, 5,225 sales). One track that got a big boost and SHOULD have made the Top 75 but didn't is Bless The Broken Road by American country trio Rascal Flatts. A number 29 hit for them in their homeland in 2005, the track was performed by Sam Kelly on the final of Britain's Got Talent on ITV on Saturday. The latest chart shows Rascal Flatts debuting at number 76 on sales of 3,741 copies of Bless The Broken Radio. That title is, of course, incorrect. Under the correct title, the track sold a further 449 copies, making its overall tally for the week 4,190 which would have earned it a Top 75 debut at number 68 or 69 (it's impossible for me to say which, as Deadmau5's The Veldt also sold 4,190 copies, and the order in which they would have ranked would have been dependant on 'fractional sales', to which I am not privy).

It is 45 years since Engelbert Humperdinck scored his last number one - but he is back on top this week. Humperdinck made his chart debut in January 1967, with first hit Release Me. It eventually topped the chart for six weeks, while his third single, The Last Waltz, spent a further five weeks at number one in the year. Humperdinck will controversially represent the UK in the 57th Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Azerbaijan on 26 May with the song Love Will Set You Free. Said track makes its chart debut this week - and I may have misled you by suggesting it was number one. It is true that it is number one on the physical sales chart, with 1,911 copies being sold on CD last week - way more than the 88 (sic!) sold by the rest of the Top 200 combined - but with digital sales fairly sluggish, the track ranks only 64th overall (4,811 sales). Still, it is Humperdinck's 17th hit - and, at the age of 76, he becomes the second oldest solo artist to make the Top 75 with a new recording, trailing only John Lee Hooker, who was 77 when he reached number 45 with Chill Out (Things Gonna Change) in 1995. If Humperdinck's single makes the Top 40 he will become the oldest solo artist to make that portion of the chart, besting Hooker who was a stripling of 75 when his re-recording of his 1961 classic Boom Boom reached number 16 in 1992.

Overall singles sales are down 3.49% week-on-week at 3,382,333 - 6.27% above same week 2011 sales of 3,182,665.

    Albums:

Two years to the week after securing their fourth number one album, Keane make it five in a row, with Strangeland racking up first week sales of 47,839. In 2004, the Sussex band's debut album Hopes And Fears entered the chart at number one on sales of 155,373; in 2006, Under The Iron Sea debuted in pole position with sales of 222,297 copies; in 2008, Perfect Symmetry accessed the apex with a 79,106 start; and in 2010, Night Train - which has eight tracks and a playing time of less than 32 minutes and is generally regarded as a mini album or an EP - took the title on sales of 28,063.

Strangeland's success comes despite a fairly lukewarm reception for introductory single, Silenced By The Night. Although the track has been given plenty of exposure, climbing as high as number 21 on the radio airplay chart -it recovers 27-25 this week, its sixth in the Top 50 - it has struggled in the sales chart. It finally breaches the Top 75 this week, having moved 78-152-162-46.

The only acts to have had more number one albums than Keane in the 21st century are Eminem, Robbie Williams and Westlife (seven apiece) and Madonna (six). Coldplay, Oasis and Bruce Springsteen have also had five. Eminem also topped the chart with D12, while Oasis' Noel Gallagher also reached top perch with his High Flying Birds album. Although some might suggest that 2005 import Live Recordings 2004 broke Keane's string of number ones by reaching number 131, on a less strict interpretation of their career limited to the Top 75 - which would also exclude digital releases of Live From London (2004), Live Recordings: European Tour (2008) and iTunes Live: London Festival (2010) - they have had five number one albums in a row, something only Abba (eight), Led Zeppelin (eight), The Beatles (seven) and Eminem (six) have exceeded in chart history. Of these acts, however, only The Beatles' run starts - like Keane's - with their first album.

Helped by an appearance on Later...With Jools Holland, enigmatic Sheffield singer/songwriter Richard Hawley's seventh studio album, Standing At The Sky's Edge delivers his second and highest charting Top 10 entry, debuting at number three (16,070 sales). Hawley's fifth album, Lady's Bridge, debuted and peaked at number six on sales of 17,396 a week after Tonight The Streets Are Ours became his only Top 40 single in 2007. Despite a lower (number 37) chart peak, Hawley's 2005 album, Coles Corner, is his biggest seller, with sales to date of 144,722.

Yorkshire indie band The Cribs’ fifth album, In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull, delivers their third Top 75 entry, debuting at number nine (8,952 sales). It thus fails to match first week sales of 2009 predecessor Ignore The Ignorant, which debuted and peaked at number eight (14,824 sales) and breakthrough album Men's Needs Women's Needs Whatever, which got to number 13 on sales of 11,272 in 2007.

Barbadian pop trio Cover Drive have had three consecutive Top 10 singles, including the number one hit Twilight, with cumulative sales of more than 400,000 - but the Top 10 proves to be beyond their debut album Bajan Style, which includes all three, and sold just 8,290 copies last week, to debut at number 14.

Edinburgh's identical Reid twins Charlie and Craig were both (natch!) 50 earlier this year, and have been making hit albums for exactly half that time. Like Comedy is their 10th since 1987 and debuts at number 31 (5,051 sales). The album debuts at number two in Scotland, which accounted for 43.10% of its overall sales.

Several other debuts pepper the Top 75: Strange Clouds (number 30, 5,365 sales), rapper B.o.B.'s follow-up to number 17 debut, The Adventures Of Bobby Ray; London singer/songwriter King Charles' debut album LoveBlood (number 36, 3,901 sales); Blur/Gorillaz front man Damon Albarn's eclectic Dr. Dee (number 42, 3,409 sales); Anglo/Swedish prog rock duo Storm Corrosion's self-titled debut (number 45, 3,341 sales); and JD McPherson's retro debut, Signs & Signifiers (number 72, 1,608 sales).

Sonic pioneers and Creation label stalwarts My Bloody Valentine's catalogue has been remastered and reissued by Sony. Introductory album, Isn't Anything, from 1988, makes the Top 75 for the first time (number 61, 1,918 sales), and follow-up Loveless - their only other full length album - re-enters at number 50 (2,993 sales), 21 years after reaching number 24. A third title: EPs: 1988-1991 beats them both, debuting at number 33 (4,196 sales).

An appearance on The Voice UK's results show eight days ago paid big dividends for Emeli Sande's debut album, Our Version Of Events, which rebounds 8-2 (18,232 sales), while the track she sang, My Kind Of Love, sprints 143-27 (11,815 sales) Lana Del Rey's debut album, Born To Die got a similar boost a week earlier, but now dips 2-5 (10,062 sales), as the song she sang, Blue Jeans, collapses 32-66 (4,643 sales).

A week after debuting at number one, Marina & The Diamonds' second album, Electra Heart plunges to number 13 (8,416 sales).

21 climbs 5-4 for Adele but its sales are down again, to 14,644 - the lowest tally of its 68 week chart tenure.

Rebecca Ferguson appeared on both Britain's Got Talent and Alan Carr's shows to sing Teach Me How To Be Loved (BGT) and Glitter & Gold (AC) last week. It makes a 182-116 climb with 2,209 sales in the week, while parent album Heaven leaps 13-6 (9,901 sales). Also helped by the fact iTunes are advertising it on TV and selling it for £5.99, Heaven has climbed for six weeks in a row since reaching its lowest chart ebb (60-54-43-41-30-13-6), and has now sold more than half a million copies, with Saturday's sales lifting its 23 week tally to 501,338. Ferguson, of course, came to fame in the seventh (2010) season of The X Factor, and Heaven is making up ground on One Direction's Up All Night - the biggest selling set to emerge from an act on the programme that year. Up All Night ebbs 20-29 with 5,459 sales in the week, raising its overall tally to 608,382. Ferguson finished second, One Direction third...and the winner of The X Factor 2010 was Matt Cardle, whose debut album Letters has so far sold 268,865 copies - only 302 of them last week.

Overall album sales are down 4.05% week-on-week at 1,457,792 - 8.16% below same week 2011 sales of 1,587,342.

Shockingly low sales in the album chart
    It's like you're screaming . . . and no one can hear;
you almost feel ashamed . . . that someone could be that important
