Lylat Wars is a MUST![]()
Having found my old console up the loft, I really never got very far with buying games after 1997. I only have Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 (which I can't find so have bought online for £13), Wave Race and Diddy Kong Racing. I've looked on wikipedia and there aren't many games that sounded recognizable. I've went ahead and also bought Donkey Kong 64 and the first Zelda game, which always looked beautiful.
Are there any other games actually worth looking out for? The Paper Mario one also looked cute, but I couldn't find it cheap and don't expect this current nostalgia I'm having to last that much longer.

Banjo Kazooie![]()
And oh...
Oh HOW MANY YEARS
Is it NOW Maurice?
You must get Blast Corps. Once you've moved past the obvious choices, it's one of the most entertaining games for the N64.
Majora's Mask
Jet Force Gemini
Perfect Dark
God I loved Jet Force Gemini. Wasn't it kind of panned by critics?
It was on a massive massive scale, wide weapon selection and some lovely sub mission moments - my favourite being turning a corner and coming across the big bug club and finding a pumping disco hall![]()

Mario 64, HELLO? And definitely Banjo Kazooie. If I ever get the means with which to play that again, I fear I'll die.
He already has it!
I'm definitely seconding dmlaw's suggestion of Blast Corps - what a fantastic concept, and it was brilliantly executed as well. The only problem was those last secret missions on the moon were too bloody hard - I never EVER managed to beat them![]()

Oh yeah. I thought it was strange noone had mentioned it yet.![]()
SoB did you get the RAM pack with Donkey King because you need it to play!
I *think* so. I'm sure it was mentioned.
I'm finding Mario 64 a bit hard - I have 120 stars and defeated Bowser back in the day so I won't bother with that one.
On Diddy Kong Racing I didn't realize the significance of the games I had saved so deleted them all! I'm now up to 29 stars, but have no chance against the Octopus (I hate the hover) and the coin challenge in the Dragon zone is winding me up. The code I entered for 'all blue balloons' also hasn't worked in any mode of play.

I don't see any mention of F Zero X, Pilotwings 64 of Spacestation Silicon Valley, all of which are worth a play.
I've had to request my Donkey Kong is cancelled as the sender tried to get away with no pak, despite the order being "1 of Donkey Kong 64 With Expansion Pak (N64)" so hopefully if my money went through I shall get it back. My rather melodramatic email warned that I would "take action" if I wasn't reimbursed. I really am one of those people who sound a bit simple when getting angry at things, which I learned at the bank recently.

So on Diddy Kong I've got 38 balloons and just have to defeat T.T. It doesn't seem so daunting as the second Octopus, but will take some time to master the speed boost precision. I've heard there are 40 balloons though, and another competition where the courses are inverted or something, but will NOT be bothering if/when I get to that.
Mario Kart 64 and Zelda came through the post box today, I'm really impressed with the graphics of the racing game, but the courses are FAR too long - 8 minutes on the rainbow race, no thank you (although it looks dazzling) Also, the mushrooms aren't particular boosting, and you never maintain a lead, which is very annoying (the compensation is that you can catch up easily, which the length of the tracks also enables), and there are no proper boosters to drive over, which was always a great way for staying way ahead on the SNES version (which I've also recently found). I've only played the 50cc game, so maybe these little features will be avail on the 100cc and 150cc competitions.

I've sort of finished Diddy Kong Racing, got into the Funland zone, but really can't be arsed getting the coins so will probably leave it. I initially thought it was quite basic, but ended up loving it.
Banjo just arrived today, it's really cute and I've got up to the part where I'm now an ant wearing a sought-after blue back-pack.

Banjo was so brilliant. There's a really quite beautiful moment in the snow level where peer over the top and there's huge sense of height and depth along with lovely Christmas music and the mini games were so much better. Rare ripped off a lot from Nintendo but I always felt it was just slightly more fun when they did.

I'm keenly looking out for the sequel at a cheap price, but reckon I can wait. I've came to the end of my nostalgia trip as far as buying goes.
All in all I've bought:
Mario Tennis (really enjoying this).
Zelda (haven't played much, although it seems like the kind of game you could play WITH someone else because there's strategy involved).
Pilotwings (I've tried a few times, but failed the FIRST test).
Blastcorps (haven't put it on, but it's amazing that I totally remember it when I used to obsessively buy Nintendo magazine drooling for the N64 to finally come out in Europe).
Banjo
Mickey's Speedway (a relatively poor offering from Rare, it just doesn't feel special at all and I had mistakenly thought Clarabelle the cow was one of the characters as I LOVE her 'lol').
Yeah, too bad Rare don't work with Nintendo anymore as they were a good fit. I wonder what happened.

Nintendo only ever owned a 49% stake in Rare - they only sold it after the major shareholder sold their 51% to Microsoft. I guess that this would essentially have meant that potentially several Nintendo-owned franchises (Donkey Kong, for example) could have ended up on a Microsoft system, or at the very least they would no longer have been the primary console for which Rare developed games. And everyone knows that Nintendo don't like to share - it took ages for them to let Sega develop the 'Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games' series and even then they only let them do it with their involvement (an iPhone version was developed but Sega were required to remove ALL of the Nintendo characters and any reference to them). I'm sure that Nintendo KNEW how valuable the Rare licence was to them, but they wouldn't even entertain the notion of being the lesser partner to a rival like Microsoft.
Oh, I read something about Rare being influenced by South Park for Bad Fur Day, and it made me think about in Diddy Kong. The 'Dragon' game in the castle - I'm convinced they were influenced by a game in the Gladiators where contestants bungee jumped to get balls and put them in a basket, with the idea being to collect bananas.

I find it hard to believe Nintendo didn't have the preemption rights to purchase the 51% stake ahead of third parties. It must have been a deliberate decision.
A normal person must
Dismiss you with disgust
And weep for those who trusted you.
I get the impression that it was simply a case of Microsoft being willing to pay the highest price - and Nintendo not being so interested in acquiring the other 51% that they were willing to compete with the price paid. I think their importance to Nintendo was somewhat over-inflated - although Rare were responsible for some killer titles, when you see a list of their entire output, you realise how few of their games were actually critically and commercially successful. And I guess Nintendo themselves were pouring money into developing the GameCube and didn't have the kind of money they did post-Wii/DS to just stump up the cash.
Rare were on a downward spiral anyway. I do think Nintendo just made a really good business decision.

I'm now on level Rusty Bucket Bay playing Banjo - after the previous haunted level it's a wee bit of a let down. If I can complete this soon I'll have to do a rate for it. I'm very tempted to shell out £40 for the sequel. The walk-throughs on youtube are very helpful for when you hit a wall, so to speak.

I FUCKING HATED RUSTY BUCKET!
Don't worry there's always a water level to make it EVEN WORSE!

I need to find a cheat to get more than 100 eggs. That's twice I've died because of those boxes. I might try jump-bombing on the little ones first though.

I loved BK as a kid; I think my favourite level was the 4-seasons - have you gotten to that yet SorB? The final battle was terribly underwhelming though. I still have my 64 console as well but I haven't played it in years... maybe I'll give it a go.

No, I've still got two jigsaws to get in the snowman level. It's the running shoes race that is the current challenge giving me issues, but it doesn't look IMPOSSIBLE. On this level I need to find the 'book' telling me the code 'blueeggs' or something so that I can have 200 of them to throw at DEM BOXES in Rusty Bucket. As long as I get to explore all the levels completing it isn't a major issue for me. I'm about 15 notes from getting into the world that you find in that beautiful tree area (which is VERY Donkey Kong Country).

I'm onto the 4 seasons forrest level, it's rather breath-taking to fly as the bee and then see the changes in things like the chick hatching and then wanting fed, but falling all the way down is tedious. I caved in and bought Tooie and having had a quick wander in the introduction level, it's looking awesome (probably stretching the console to its limit admittedly).

Nobody mentioned Goldeneye yet?? Probably one of my favourite games of all time!
Gloss rhymes with hair!
I actually need to buy a new CABLE to get back to playing any game. The wire just came off the bit at the end that connects to the TV. There was a 'shooting' element to an early level in Banjo Tooie I got to, but I get much too tense playing those games. Goldeneye IS meant to be one of the best games in that genre.

You really need to get some friends round for the multiplayer to get the best out of it but the single player campaign is worth it alone.

If it's not all that smoke effect like Turok then I might see if I can get it cheap.

Are the N64 games not available on an emulator? I have all the SNES and Mega Drive games on a couple of DVDs plus all the Neo Geo, Master System, NES, Game Gear, Game Boy and Arcade games...about 20 DVDs in total I think...
I really should just get a new console (are they still called consoles?) and take advantage of the access to vintage games. I always just decide I'll wait for prices to go down in about 2-4 years by which point there's something else out.
