    Fifty Shades Of Grey

Facebook/Twitter seems to have EXPLODED this past few weeks with people talking about this book. All the reviews I've read on social media have been really positive, but the critical reviews are split.

Has anyone else been tempted to give it a go? Is it a genuinely GOOD read or is it just a bit of SMUT?

Yeah it's a pretty good read. Bordering on porn. Read all three books in 4 days.

it COULD have been really good. The characters are interesting but the author is lazy and it gets quite repetitive in places.

And she calls her fanny her "sex"... is there really any need for THAT?

I'm really just intrigued that it's come out of NOWHERE and suddenly loads of people are talking about it. How? WHY?

Didn't it start out as Twilight fanfic?

I've heard this is absolutely TERRIBLE

If those excerpts are accurate, everyone involved should be DEEPLY ashamed with themselves

Yes, everything I've heard about it has been scathing. But then anyone in the literary world WOULD hate it, no doubt.

I would hardly call that blog review part of the literary world!

The quote i keep seeing is THIS -

His pointer finger circled my puckered love cave. “Are you ready for this?” he mewled, smirking at me like a mother hamster about to eat her three-legged young.
Which i thought was a spoof, but no apparently it's actually in there. Good look to the old gomper writing it i say, not many people can turn their frig fantasies into millions and millions of pounds.

This thing is utterly unreadable. It's as if she's trying to prove that actually something could be worse written than the Twilight series.

it's supposed to be ok if you're into these kind of things, the one review i read said it has promise but it ends up as soft porn.

I honestly cannot believe how bad this book is. It's the literary equivalent of Showgirls.

Pulling off his boxer briefs his erection springs free. Holy cow. He reaches over to his bedside table and grabs a foil packet and then he moves between my legs, spreading them further apart. He kneels up and pulls a condom onto his considerable length. Oh no...Will it? How?
"Don't worry" he breathes, his eyes on mine. "You expand too"
    HILARIOUS.

I can't wait for the film adaptation. Angelina Jolie has expressed interest in directing it.

To be fair though, it's very rare in any medium that the most sold items are the best. The Top 100 best selling singles ever is filled with SHITE. When I think of "biggest selling books in the UK" I think of Harry Potter, Mr Men and Dan Brown.

But plenty of AWFUL PEOPLE too. It doesn't surprise me at all that a book like this has become so big in the UK.

Also, when something becomes really big, its success is self-perpetuating. It's very much the same with music. Is Adele's album THAT much better than plenty of similar albums that sold a fraction? Not at all. I think a sheep mentality is really quite normal human behaviour.

And there's actually a serious point to this - women are obviously starved of decent erotica. I reckon even Twilight (which inspired this) is a success mostly because of the highly fetishised understones of the central love triangle.

Same with women's cinema. So much mainstream fare is aimed at men, that on the rare occasions when a popcorn movie captures the attention of women over 30, it tends to cross over from blockbuster to cultural phenomenon.

Or forced on you at school by those Gideons people who look heartbroken as they have to walk through a playground littered with torn pages of scripture to leave

That Fifty Shades of Suck blog is really amusing, but I can't believe people are actually buying this reheated shite. I get that once something gets big everyone jumps on the bandwagon, like with Adele suddenly being considered above average, but I just don't get why this got big in the first place. There's other erotic fiction out there surely?

I think to an extent it's true with music as well. Not to the same degree, but the big albums are the 'supermarket' ones, and if you look at the BIG sellers of the last few years, it isn't men bunging them in the trolley.

They are terrible and I am finding it increasingly difficult to not be a complete bitch to women at work who think it's the best thing ever.

It's embarrassing it's so popular. GET LAID ALREADY.

Although I did find myself wanting to know why Christian Grey was such a cunt. Once I found out, I got bored. The 'inner goddess' bullshit made me want to die a little inside every time I read it.

However, as people like Ian Smoulderhalder, Matt Bomer and Askars have been banded around for the film role, clearly I will suffer it for the eye candy. But only if they keep in the tampon scene. RANKTASTIC.
Shut up and let me see your jazz hands....
