MEH was sadly the main feeling i could muster for this.



It really was just deadpan quirkiness a go-go, which i think is fine if there's a bit of heart or soul to it or something/someone to route for as well, but i didn't see any of that. The boy reminded me of Glen Bishop off mad men, and i ended up wanting someone to hit the Lana DelReyish girl in the face with a MASSIVE SPADE. There's lots of good people in supporting roles, but they're basically wasted (imo). And i LOVED the story, but just could not care for it in this stilted form. It's like "oh we'll just do it all in this too-cool-for-school style to hide from the fact that there's barely any jokes/substance".

I did like that Tilda Swinton's character was just called Social Services though, and that she got to wear a cape. And it's always nice to see Frances McDormand, even if she doesn't get to make an impact. The whole thing also looked quite marvellous as well , but yeah MEH on the whole. Has anyone else seen it? It's been a while since i saw a Wes Anderson, but i seem to remember enjoying them a bit more than this.

I couldn't agree more. The worst thing was that other people in the cinema were laughing. I just didn't find any of it funny in the slightest. Bruce Willis was the best thing in it and he's probably the least obviously cast "quirky" actor in the film. Submarine did this kind of thing so better.

I just felt that like you said, the story was good, but it could have been handled better by pretty much any other capable director.

Oh Submarine's a great comparison. I didn't care for that too much for similar reasons, but agree that it was definitely better. I remember as much about that well over a year on as i do about this less than a day on.

I did like Willis as well actually, and i generally avoid the chap.

I thought it was lovely to look at and i appreciated the little quirks but the kids were SO QUIRKY that they bordered on the line of AUTISM and that really bothered me.

didn't care much for that either

I must admit the prospect of exploring Wes Anderson's filmography never appealed to me before, but I took a punt on this and thought it was an exceptionally crafted and well directed story on the end of childhood; although the magic realism and quirks may not be to everyone's tastes (I personally live for that shit) there was heart and emotional acuity that cut through and gave it weight and worldly weariness, showing an acceptance of the temporariness of things in life and letting go. I loved the wistful melancholy running throughout and the use of Benjamin Britten's Friday Afternoons in the last scene, leading to that final frame of Sam's painting, made my heart sigh. All in all a masterstroke of film making on every level.
