5. Turkey Dön Artık - Tuğba Önal & Grup Mistik
Place in Final: 16
First Impressions:
Yay, ethnic instrumentation! Turkey have arrived. This cannot be any worse than last year. I do hope this means we will see some bellydancing in the show. This is quite likable. It's not blowing my world away, but when I listen to a Turkish ESC entry, this is the sort of thing I want to hear. It's nice and chanty.
The Live Perf:
Ooh some handclapping. I'm on board already. Oh she's having breathing issues, which isn't a surprise considering how relentless the song is. Well that at least explains why it didn't finish higher. I like her Angelina Jolie-style leg. This is great little song, catchy but not CHEAP, which appears to be a running MOTIF this year.
4. Sweden Take Me To Your Heaven - Charlotte Nilssen
Place in Final: 1
First Impressions:
Oh my God this so ABBA! It's quite Christmassy, with the sax. Reminds me of I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day mashed up with Waterloo. This is absolutely poptastic. I think I may develop a nosebleed from the sheer amounts of schlager I am being exposed to. I imagine this is what VoR's alarm clock plays. I can certainly see why it won, it's just so full of LIFE. Not my favourite, but I like it.
The Live Perf:
Here we go, the winning perf. What is she wearing on the top half of her body? Is it painted on? She has quite scary eyes, but her VOX is rather good, isn't it? Makes a nice change for a good ESC 99 singer to get something nice to sing. LOL at the orange-gai backing singers! I APPROVE of this song. It's not '13/10 AMAZING' but it is very good I can certainly deal with it winning. And a face full of hair to finish!
As an aside, I have JUST found out that Charlotte Nilsson is the same person as this Charlotte Perelli some of you bang on about.
TOO FUCKING LOW
Just kidding, glad you like it. God you have so much to learnCharlotte Nilsson-Perrelli is Eurovision ROYALTY.
The hair flick ending is genuinely kind of iconic in Sweden![]()
BTW Dinlo how old are you? Take Me To Your Heaven was a TOP TWENTY UK HIT.
I still hear it in gay bars a fair bit, sometimes even when I haven't requested it![]()

Croatia should win of what is left.
What's confusing? We just find the heart of the prison and the dragon who speaks without walls, and we're home free. Simple.
So it's Croatia, Belgium and?
The third I can't remember is going to be something UTTERLY terrible isn't it?![]()
Germany?

OH MY GOD IT'S GERMANY
Now I AM mad about Charlotte's placing![]()
Good to see Turkey so high up - I wish they sent more like Don Artik and Dinle.
A normal person must
Dismiss you with disgust
And weep for those who trusted you.
You must have missed it back when Radio 1 were playing it 17 times per day.
*may not actually have happened
I don't think Like the Wind is THAT great to be honest.

I love it. It sounds like the theme from Jonathan Creek.
That reference may not mean all that much to you Kevin.
I KNEW it would be Germany
I APPROVE but not above Harlot![]()
I can't wait until Dinlo does 2006 and We Are The Winners winds up higher than Invincible![]()
3. Croatia Marija Magdalena - Doris Dragović
Place in Final: 4
![]()
First Impressions:
I wasn't too impressed with this at first, but then I got to that chorus. It's quite basic (which seems to be recurring theme with this year's ESC), but it's effective, especially the 'aaa-aaa-aaa' bit after the title. And a nice DRAMATIC ending.
The Live Perf:
This has grown on me massively, which is strange because I'd usually expect this sort of thing to be more instant. I'm loving the perf, especially the costume. Time for something a bit sluttier. I love the lead into the chorus (is it in minor key?). She is blatantly cheating with the backing vocals, though. I really, REALLY like this, but let's be real, it's not quite NMNS.
Please somebody hide the kitchen knife from Penny
2. Belgium Like The Wind - Vanessa Chinitor
Place in Final: 12=

First Impressions:
Liking the intro. The intrumentation is the strongest part of this song for me, especially after the choruses. It's got a hint of that bit of Danse Macabre that's used in Jonathan Creek [edit: great minds, VoR]. There's definitely a touch of Slovakia 98 to this at first. I do enjoy when it really picks up. The chorus is a bit basic, but I could definitely get on board with this.
The Live Perf:
Oh no, second slot of DOOM. I am properly LOVING this song now, and the presentation is very simple but gorgeous *raises arm*. It's all so pretty and classy, especially compared with the vast amount of pop this year. It really stands head and shoulders above the (few) other ballads this year. LOVE IT.
Oh GOD REISE NACH JERUSALEM #1
But ABOVE MARIJA![]()
I love Reise nach Jerusalem but let's face it it's ASIAVISION FODDER
Hurrah!

Oh actually I got mixed up. I thought this year's German entry was Wadde Hadde Du Daa. Reise Nacht Jerusalem is actually a perfectly acceptable #1.
SORRY FOR DOUBTING YOU DINLO
I didn't realise Marija Magdalena broke the rules of 'Dinlo Did Eurovision 1999'.
As for Belgium, I prefer the Dutch-language version. But lovely either way.

Sürpriz!
1. Germany Reise nach Jerusalem (Kudüs'e seyahat) - Sürpriz
Place in Final: 3

First Impressions:
This is obviously pandering towards the hosts. Definitely not the sort of sound I'd associate with Germany, but I'm liking this. I take that back, I'm LOVING this. It's so very instant. This must have done very well. It's exactly the sort of thing I can imagine middle-aged drunk in-laws losing their shit to at a middle-eastern wedding (well maybe not DRUNK
).
The Live Perf:
Oh God I LOVE this! It's actually amazing. I'm not getting bored of at all. I don't care if the live perf is a bit of a mess, it's wonderful. I love the constant swapping of singers, including one of the Ferreiras and the attention-grabbing bitch in silver who even sings over one of the lesser singers. I also love that Ling Xiaoyu out-voxes her. It's catchy, it's joyful, it's got ethnic instrumentation, it's a MESS it's everything I want from Eurovision. Well done Germany! More of this, less of Roman Lobb plz.
I love the journey to Jerusalem. Well done.
To a place without fear, with no moonlight
I seem to have misplaced my MP3 of Hood op de wind, does anyone have it to hand?
Hood op de wind?
What's confusing? We just find the heart of the prison and the dragon who speaks without walls, and we're home free. Simple.
Sorry, Hoog. The Dutch version of Like The Wind.
I was wondering if it was something Flemish. I don't really understand Hoog op de wind either. Maybe if I hear the entire song.
