It vaguely reminds me of 'I Get Along'. Not necessarily a COMPLIMENT
They really have become quite the BOUTIQUE PROJECT
This will be released on September 17th. The lead single is called "Winner":
This is good: it has the typical mid '80s style of production, but "Love Etc." is miles better.

Best song I've heard from then in a while!!
I bought Format last night having not been aware of its existence at all up until then - my first CD in AGES. I think I had most (all?) of the stuff on there anyway, but I bet the liner notes will be GRAND.
'Sue, did the President call?' ... 'No' Last.fm
I still think this single is PROPER RUBBISH. Their second worst single ever after Numb.![]()
Not a bad song or video, but I hope this album won't be completely devoid of the pop stompers I love from them.
YOUTH IN TROUBLE
even Moopy doesn't care that the album has leaked for a while now...
and it's good and surprisingly eclectic. My fave so far is "ego music"
.
I also love how "your early stuff" is followed by a quite oldschool PSP track

I'll buy it when it comes out, but my interest levels are REALLY LOW thanks to Winner.![]()
Same as VoR for me. I'll get it on the day of release but I'm not even REMOTELY excited![]()
It's been too long, it's been too long...
As disappointing as it feels, I'm really not going to bother this time round. I'm sick of trying to like their DISQUES just because I ONCE DID and it's not like I ever have the urge to hear YES
(Apart from 'The Way It Used To Be')

Is the deluxe edition REALLY just a cd of instrumental versions?
UGH
It's been too long, it's been too long...
Yes, just the instrumentals. The single had three b-sides though, all better than "winner". Next single will come in different Neil/Chris packaging for the last 10 collectors
.
It feels like even THEY don't care anymore.
I suspect this is going to be the MASSIVE FLOP they've just about managed to avoid thus far.
But the album is solid. "leaving" would have been a much better lead single
![]()

"I know enough's enough
and you're leaving
You've had enough time to decide
on your freedom
but I can still find some hope
to believe in love
Our love is dead
but the dead don't go away
They made us what we are
they're with us every day
Our love is dead
but the dead are still alive
in memory and thought
and the context they provide ... "
.
"Winner" is TERRIBLE. And the other song posted in here. I wasn't aware of it being around either, but clearly I haven't missed much.
It's nothing new, only less exciting, melodic and so much more boring than most of their other stuff
Total turkey of an album alas
They've done a MADONNA with this one and no mistake
The album's very Behaviour. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the next one is very Very (i.e. poppy and obviously melodic) in response.

I still think Winner is absolutely awful so I'm glad that didn't happen. Plus I assume they wouldn't have done it themselves anyway. And if they had they would only have humiliated themselves.‘Winner’, the Pet Shop Boys semi-hit assumed by most to have been ‘penned’ for the Olympics, was originally considered as a UK Eurovision entry.
In an interview with The Arts Desk (full thing here) Neil Tennant explains that the song was written while Pet Shop Boys were supporting Take That in 2011.
“Every night we would leave the stadium and Take That would come on singing this song they had called ‘The Greatest Day’,” Neil says. “Chris said, ‘Why don’t we try writing a mid-tempo anthem?’”
But in the back of his mind he heard distant feet: Scooch and Engelbert Humperdinck to a Euro beat. “The truth of the matter is that, from my perspective, I was thinking about the Eurovision Song Contest. The BBC have twice asked us to write the Eurovision entry for Britain and we thought if we had the right song we might give it to them. When we started writing this it seemed to be like a Eurovision Song Contest song. The references to competing, in my mind, at the time, were about entering Eurovision and it coming from Kazakstan.”
Amazing.
In the end, of course, they kept it for their new album ‘Elysium’, and chucked it out around the Olympics. “We put out the song because it was evidently relevant and we knew that if we didn’t put it out, when the album came out in September everyone would say, ‘Why didn’t you put out that song during the Olympics?’”
But still...![]()

I think 'Give It A Go' might be the worst Pet Shop Boys song ever. Truly appalling.![]()
I thought Winner might trouble the iTunes chart after the parade performance yesterday, but no such luck.
I don't have the slightest inclination to investigate this album. Truly a heritage act for me now.
It's a mixed bag for me, but veering more towards the crap than good.
'Leaving' is the clear highlight on first listen.
The album is #4 in the midweeks.
'Sue, did the President call?' ... 'No' Last.fm
Yes was midweek #1 but fell to #4.
Their lowest peaking studio albums were Nightlife and Release - both #7. I'd be surprised if this wasn't lower by Sunday.
I'm totally obsessed with 'Leaving'. The verse lyrics are stunning.

I do hope they tour again their last one was fabulous

Oh it WAS. I saw it three times. Four if you include the Take That tour support (I don't).
I wish I'd been to their previous tours.

Even I haven't gotten around to getting it yet. I keep meaning to pop into town as you won't get the deluxe edition in ASDA etc but I haven't gotten around to it. Though why I'm bothering for a set of instrumentals I DON'T KNOW but I know once I get back to looning about them, I'd end up buying it so I might as well take the plunge now.
Thinking about it, I haven't even picked up "Format" yet
It's been too long, it's been too long...
Album in at #9
The album is not a grower. My favourites are "leaving" and "ego music".
.
It's one of my songs of the year. I love Neil's deep voice and the lyrics (as I've said previously) are just incredible.

I love my Pet Shop Boys miserable and melancholic, so this whole album really works rather gloriously for me and I'm enjoying it a lot. "Leaving" is absolutely stellar plus there are plenty of other fantastic moments on it besides that.
I've played it once so far (only arrived yesterday) but it entirely washed over me. I'm hopeful this will change with repeated listens...
It's been too long, it's been too long...
