I don't think pop radio will touch this beyond week one, to be honest. But I do think urban will be all over this. It's worth noting that the last big pop hit that started on urban and then crossed over to pop was "Single Ladies" in 2008-9. Still, I feel it will pull respectable AI numbers in the long run.

I'm banking on another "Obsessed" like chart run on the Hot 100. I just hope it leads to album sales.

Wishing it was DRAKE doing a rap verse instead of Meek Mill (whoever the fuck he is). Mimi does like her outdated Young Jeezy-type rappers.

I'm sure we can expect Da Brat on single #2.

Too much rap but that chorus is glorious, the Get'um Get'um Get'um bit is catchy as chlamydia.

I actually really like it, one less rap verse would be magic.
He looks good in whatever he wears... But he's not wearing yellow.

    pretty generic but it's ok
too much rap, the horns are my favourite thing about it
is the sound quality really shit or does her voice sound absolutely shot on this?

This is SHIT THE BED AMAZING.

I mean, it's NOT, really, but three listens in and I am TOTALLY feeling it.

It's not really like ANYTHING else around at the moment and not in a 'Memoirs...' because-everyone-else-has-more-sense WAY. I don't think it will be a MASSIVE hit, but it would lead nicely into something a bit more FOR THE MASSES in the way that 'It's Like That' did.

There's something quite OLD-SCHOOL about the chorus as well. Despite the overload of rapping, I feel like it's ironically got a bit more identity as a Mariah track than anything from the last two albums, bar 'Obsessed' did.

I REALLY like this on first listen. So much better than Touch My Body and Obsessed for me (I didn't really like those 2).
What's confusing? We just find the heart of the prison and the dragon who speaks without walls, and we're home free. Simple.

It's an 7/10 for me (Mariah's bit is an 8.5/10 but let down all the rap), I feel a great remix or two and HQ version will really elevate it though.

I feel like the second single will be a hip hop/pop banger a la "Migrate"/"Side Effects" or at least I hope so. They cannot let one more campaign down by unleashing another shit ballad as the follow up (of course I'm referring to the last two albums and not WBT)

If I take my Billboard hat off, I'm comfortable with what I'm hearing. It's not a world-beater and doesn't need to be. At least SHE is still engaged with the music she's making.

I am however feeling a sense of IS THAT IT?!

(might listen to Migrate before bed and quietly sob into my pillow)

I think it's MUCH more instant than 'Obsessed' but the magic in that was it was SUCH a grower as MC lead singles go

Initially my feelings were more MIXED than her race, it's a bit like Michelle Williams got it really right with her long-awaited return to gospel, but the soft-sung hook and recapitualting Mariah's trademark pleasures and perils of trials and tribulations continuum, and things of that nature, what a way to re-establish her presence. Modest, self-made and insistent. It's really good. I think I'm on my 4th listen.

I think it would have been an 11/10 for you when you were still being beaten down by your older piece. Maybe you just need to be in a certain PLACE for it to really LIFT YOU

Didn't you move to Paris with him or did I just watch the final Sex & The City episodes the night you announced you were leaving London and connect the two events in my mind as the same thing?

This is my main thought! She's back, she's urban, she's got a nice chorus for you, and a HUGE POP HIT waiting in the wings to follow up

The reaction online isn't all too positive for the same reasons we've discussed (I don't remember the general first verdict on "Obsessed" or the previous lead singles?).

Billboard posted this new article with a few Mariah quotes about the song:

"Working with Ross and Meek on the same record was incredible," Mariah Carey told media on a conference call today (August 2). "Obviously Ross is a star and everybody loves him. I'm a fan of his music. I really, really wanted to work with him. I love the tone of his voice. I think the contrast of his voice and mine would be something special. I always like to do collaborations that people might think are different."

"Meek adds an excitement, a newness to the record that is pretty rare right now," Mariah continued.

"Triumphant," which Randy Jackson chimed in to say is "inspirational," is the first single off Mariah's 14th studio album. The singer touched on the untitled album while on the call. "I'm collaborating with a lot of my favorite people but the main thing is [that] I'm not trying to follow any particular trend," she said. "I want it to be well received. I want to stay true to myself and the music that I love and make the fans happy."

Mariah also spoke on how she felt of the current state of R&B and its mainstream cross-over, saying "It would be incredible if we can bring back the days where R&B songs didn't have to cross over. It makes me sad that there are so many talented R&B artists that don't get the chance that they should."

There's such a striking difference in effort in hit-making between E=MC2 and Memoirs, I think she really learned her lesson. Not that I don't like the former but listening back to it in 2012 it lacks that sense of cohesion and sincerity that Memoirs really succeeds in. But I guess she had more to lose in 2008 than 2010.

As I've pretty much always said, 'E=MC˛'s main problem is that it sounds like Mariah singing the latest 'NOW...' compilation. It's a collection of songs that seemed intended to be radio-ready with little thought for how they'd hang together as an album or whether that's what people really WANTED from her. Individually some GREAT tracks, but generally faceless and very much "of their time".
