Glasgow's reputation is REALLY unfair. Edinburgh is probably prettier especially the city centre but a lot of that is down to Glasgow being BOMBED to FUCK during the wars, plus it was always much more of an industrial city. I think Glasgow has a much trendier vibe than Edinburgh does and probably has a better nightlife, (especially gay nightlife, neither city is amazing but Edinburgh's is dire) and has always been thought of as the second best city for shopping outside London.

Yes there are dodgy areas, but every city has those, and some of Glasgow's nicest areas top Edinburgh for me - the West End is amazing!

I agree about Glasgow's unfair rep, maybe it's worse if you travel into poorer estates, but having always stayed in the city centre I've never experience anything negative. It's a GREAT night out! I always try to catch a gig or something up there a couple of times a year as the people are just FUN.

I can see why the Isle of Wight would appeal if you want a slice of England as how it was in the 1970s. It's postcard perfect, with a lovely rolling landscape. And I mean that in a good way, honestly! But in terms of scenery and beaches, although it's undoubtedly incredibly pleasant and picturesque in parts, I'd say Cornwall, Devon and Dorset (and I imagine a lot of the Scottish coast, although I haven't been personally) are a lot more dramatic. Although obviously a lot further away from London.

But then I guess New Zealand has more than its fair share of dramatic scenery (and ours tends to be on a smaller scale), so perhaps that's not what you're after!

I'll second/third/whatever the love for Glasgow's West End. And while Edinburgh is undeniably beautiful (and probably I prefer it overall to Glasgow, even if that's possibly because I've spent more time there), there is an air of a museum city about it. Glasgow felt a lot more lived in, real, and cosmopolitan. And unplagued by tourists to these eyes, at least.

I think the museum thing is definitely true for tourists and visitors as they tend to visit the Old Town and Royal Mile which are generally geared towards them and not much else. I think it's only once you live here and really get a feel for the city that you discover some of the more interesting areas like Stockbridge, Morningside and Leith/Shore area. The city is really diverse once you get out of the touristy parts.

Contrary to what a few others have said, gay scene aside Edinburgh's nightlife is actually really good. The problem is that a lot of the best places are well hidden under street/basement level or down sidestreets thus it's really only the locals who know about them.

Well some good scenery of course is always nice to see. I guess though as you say I spent 23 years with lush scenery on my door step, so checking out the towns/cities/culture/history will probably be more of how I spend my time.

I agree. It really is an ace place to live for a while. And I don't even mind the museum-y nature of anything because I love art galleries and I think the National Galleries are really SPLENDID now, especially with the refurb and re-opening of the portrait gallery. I will admit to being a little fed up of the clubs but I think the pubs on offer are really diverse and fun.

I like the nice bits of Glasgow as well but i'll admit to not having been across there for AGES now.
