Has anyone read anything about how the Opening Ceremony was received around the world?
Some reactions here:

If there is a through-line to be untangled from its $42-million, cast-of-thousands, higgledy-piggledy progress through modern Britain, with industrial revolutionary Isambard Brunel (played by Kenneth Branagh, quoting Shakespeare) and World Wide Web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee (as himself) at the other, it might be something like, “Sorry for the unintended consequences, but we did give you steam engines, great pop music and comedy and the roots of social networking. It was ugly there for a while, but we’re all right -- and everybody dance now.”

Greg Baum, The Sydney Morning Herald:
"Boyle's vivid and vibrant pageant set the tone for these Games and perhaps even a new direction for the Olympic movement. Rio has a hard act to follow, which won't deter it at all... His show did not take itself too seriously, but was never trivial. It was irreverent, but never disrespectful. It was clever, but did not outsmart itself. It was at once subversive and sublime. This is a country of royals and aristocrats, but Boyle's show rejoiced in the commoner."
Anastasia Uspenskaya, BBC Russian Service, on Radio 4:
"There is a lot of interest in Russia, of course... almost all of the Russian media says London was in a very unlucky situation because it had the Olympics straight after Beijing - so it was an extremely difficult task to try and beat the Beijing ceremony and actually they didn't succeed. But there is one thing Russian media likes more about London opening - it's that unlike the robotic Beijing show, last night's performance was what they call elegantly chaotic - which is quite an English thing."
Zhuang Chen, BBC Chinese Service, on Radio 4:
"Reaction from China is quite positive in general because it was broadcast live... it has become a very hot topic on China's vibrant cyber sphere. The Chinese official Wang Ning, director of the Beijing Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, said he would give 90 out of 100 marks to Britain, which is quite high. He liked the innovative ways to illustrate British culture, its influence and also its new image. But the downside to that - the TV cut-aways during the show might compromise the experience of the live audience inside the stadium... And also talked about by Chinese audiences was the human side of the opening ceremony, which was not that illustrated four years ago at Beijing."
Just rewatched it... I didn't notice the 7/7 tribute bit last night... Glad that was included, I feared it might be ignored as a dampener... despite being so obviously linked - and the worst thing to happen on British soil for a generation...
Aside from that it was highlight after highlight for me. Sally Webster making a brief appearance was possibly my #1 moment.
The response over here overwhelmingly positive.

Oh right. I remember her performance, but didn't appreciate the significance of it.
It wasn't obvious. I guess not to bring attention to the reason they died..
The stadium announcer did say before hand that it was a tribute to those who couldn't be there. And the photo montage were apparently photos sent in my spectators of people who had died.
I thought Abide With Me was really well sung. And I normally abhor religious songs.

In other news NBC cut out the Lesbian Kiss from the opening ceremony. Saudi Arabia showed it.

Apparently they cut the tribute to the victims of the 7/7 bombings too![]()
Why the FUCK would they DO THAT? Why cut ANY OF IT? Let alone something THE AMERICANS CAUSED.
You could see how it could happen accidentally if they did know what was coming up.
But the Americans didn't even show (or stream) it live - it was time-shift three hours!

Naturally.
Something outrageous could happen, of course they couldn't possibly show it LIVE as in LIVE.

Apparently NBC paid over ONE BILLION DOLLARS for the tv rights and plan on delaying most things to PRIME TIME (also the name of Joan Collins' debut novel) which is why it wasn't shown live. And if they had streamed it live, they wouldn't have known when to stop every 7 minutest to run commercials. It's no excuse but as The Adventures of Stevie V said in 1990, MONEY TALKS.
Oh OBVIOUSLY. I'm well aware of that - it's just as bad when it comes to tennis tournaments in the USA.
Mind, I know this is not a very Olympic way to GO ABOUT THINGS and I don't even wish the US Athletes BAD LUCK in particular cause none of this is their fault at all but I really hope the US Team doesn't do NEARLY as well as they all expect after the all the shambles they came up with over the course of the past few days. Much of the US could do with being brought back DOWN a peg or two.
