    SINGLES

Florence And The Machine have held on to the Number 1 spot on the Official Singles Chart for the third week running.

The band's latest track, Spectrum (Say My Name), which has been remixed by Scottish DJ and producer Calvin Harris, knocked Maroon 5's Payphone off the top of the chart earlier this month to give them their first ever Number 1 single.

Maroon 5 still continue to hold firm at Number 2, while London girl group Stooshe climb two places to Number 3 with Blackheart. Brighton chart throb Conor Maynard scores his second Top 10 single with Vegas Girl which debuts at Number 4 today, while Flo Rida completes this week's Top 5 with Whistle (5).

    New Entries

In addition to Conor Maynard (Number 4) there are four other new entries in this week's Official Singles Chart Top 40.

US pop duo/engaged couple Karmin score their debut UK Top 10 hit with Brokenhearted (6), while French house DJ/producer Cedric Gervais is new in at Number 26 with Molly. Fellow Frenchman, Madeon, continues his run of UK Top 40 hits with Finale entering at Number 35, while Clement Marfo & The Frontline score their first Top 40 hit with Champion debuting at Number 38.

Olympic Tracks Headed For Chart Glory

Flowing Friday's (July 27) lavish Olympic Games opening ceremony, 15 tracks selected by creative director Danny Boyle have started to make an impact on the Official Singles Chart.

Arctic Monkeys, Underworld, Muse and Emeli Sande lead the charge with two tracks each.

Arctic Monkeys' I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor re-enters the Official Singles Chart at Number 95, while their cover of The Beatles' Come Together is at 67. Underworld's Caliban's Dream is new in at 69, and their mega-hit, Born Slippy, re-enters at 111. Emeli Sande's break-through single Heaven re-enters at Number 125, while her heartfelt rendition of Abide With Me debuts at 180 after a mere 24 hours on sale. Muse's Survival is at 82, followed by their 2009 Top 10 smash, Uprising, at Number 104.

Labrinth FT Tinie Tempah's Earthquake shoots up to 78 and Dizzee Rascal's Bonkers is Number 80. The Jam's Going Underground and The Clash's London Calling re-enter at Number 102 and 128, respectively. Frank Turner's I Still Belive is at Number 97 and The Chemical Brothers' Galvanize is at 109. Vangelis' Chariots Of Fire, which was performed on the night by the London Symphony Orchestra with a little help from Mr Bean, is at 118.

This week's highest Olympics-related track, however, is Public Enemy's Harder Than You Think, climbing 44 places to Number 27 after featuring in Channel 4's Paralympics ad campaign.

    ALBUMS

As the spotlight of the world’s media shines on East London for the opening weekend of the 2012 Olympic Games, local boy Plan B has stormed to the top of the Official Albums Chart to take home the Number 1 for Team GB.

Ill Manors, the follow-up to Plan B’s multi-platinum 2010 album The Defamation Of Strickland Banks, is the soundtrack to his critically acclaimed big screen crime drama of the same name which is set in the Olympic borough of Newham. The album has outsold its closest rival, The Gaslight Anthem’s Handwritten (Number 2), by more than two copies to one to give Plan B his second Official Number 1 album.

Maroon 5’s Overexposed today slides one place to Number 3, while Jennifer Lopez’ new Greatest Hits collection, Dance Again, debuts at Number 4. Rihanna’s latest album, Talk That Talk (5) completes this week’s Top 5.

    New Entries And High Climbers

In addition to Plan B (Number 1), The Gaslight Anthem (2) and Jennifer Lopez (4), there are just three other new entries in the Official Albums Chart Top 40.

Joss Stone’s The Soul Sessions Vol. 2, a companion album to her 2003 album The Soul Sessions, debuts at Number 6 today. US metal band Slipknot’s Best Of collection, Antennas To Hell, is new in at Number 22, while Chariots Of Fire composer Vangelis’ The Collection is at Number 37.

This weeks highest climber is Arctic Monkeys’ Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, which has climbed 89 places from 158 to 69 following their performance at the Olympic Games opening ceremony on Friday evening.

    COMPILATIONS

According to the latest Official Charts Company sales data, Now That’s What I Call Music! 82 has today become the fastest selling album of 2012 so far, and has gone straight in at Number 1 on the Official Compilation Albums Chart.

The newest installment of the hugely popular Now… series has shifted an impressive 267,000 during its first week on sale. The 44-track album, which includes Official Number 1 smashes from Carly Rae Jepsen, Fun., Maroon 5, Rita Ora, Rudimental, Will.I.Am, DJ Fresh, Cheryl and Gary Barlow, among others, takes the title away from its predecessor, Now That’s What I Call Music 81, which sold over 255,000 copies during its first week on sale back in April. US songstress Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die is the fastest selling artist album of 2012 so far, and third fastest selling album of 2012 overall, after clocking up over 116,000 sales during its first week of release in February.

Now… spin-offs Now That’s What I Call A Number 1!, which was released to celebrate 60 years of the Official Singles Chart, and Now That’s What I Call Reggae!, hold the second and third places on this week’s Official Compilation Albums Chart, while Ministry Of Sound’s The Chillout Session is new in at Number 4.

With just over 24 hours on sale, Isles Of Wonder, which features music from the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games selected by artistic director Danny Boyle, debuts at Number 5.

A shame Jennifer just misses the top 3, but I'm happy Maroon 5 is still there. Both single and album are doing great.
What's confusing? We just find the heart of the prison and the dragon who speaks without walls, and we're home free. Simple.

What's the connection? I heard it at the gym this week. I was a touch confused. It reminded of the Mrs Merton comment at the Brits years ago...

Molly is a slang term for MDMA.

The link really is super weak then.

MDMA has been out and about as a popular drug for years. Why the FUSS NOW?

I thought it sampled (or copied) her tragic attempt at being hip with the kids at that DJ event a few months ago? "I'm looking for Molly, has anyone here seen Molly?" etc.

    Singles:

Florence & The Machine rack up a third straight week atop the chart with Spectrum (Say My Name) logging a 2.86% increase in sales week-on-week to 65,790 - its highest weekly tally to date. Its cumulative sales are now 202,784, making it the fifth Florence & The Machine single to exceed the 200,000 mark.

Maroon 5's Payphone (feat Wiz Khalifa) is Spectrum's runner-up for the third straight week but lags increasingly far behind, with sales last week of 50,626 copies.

The Florence/Maroon 5 configuration marks the first time that the top two have ended up the same for three weeks in a row since February/March 2011, when Someone Like You was number one for Adele, and Price Tag was number two for Jessie J feat. B.o.B. for four straight weeks.

StooShe's Black Heart rallies 5-3 to achieve its highest chart position yet, on its sixth appearance in the chart. It sold 38,608 copies last week, raising its career tally to 258,311.

Helped by its 59p price tag last week, Conor Maynard's Vegas Girl sold 37,771 copies, but fell short of both the debut week sales and peak position of Maynard's introductory hit, Can't Say No, which opened 14 weeks ago at number two on sales of 74,792, and has since gone on to sell 223,790 copies. Both tracks are on 19 year old Brightonian Maynard's first album, Contrast, which was released today (30th).

Meanwhile, US duo Karmin score their first British hit, with Brokenhearted debuting at number six (32,682 sales), instantly beating its US Hot 100 number 16 peak.

Top 10 singles not already mentioned above: Flo Rida's Whistle rebounds 6-5 (33,808 sales); Rudimental's Feel The Love (feat. John Newman) holds at number seven (32,321 sales); Chris Brown's Don't Wake Me Up falls 3-8 (32,109 sales); This Is Love falls 4-9 (31,099 sales) for Will.I.Am feat Eva Simons; We Are Young rebounds 12-10 (27,236 sales) for Fun feat. Janelle Monae.

Featured extensively in Channel 4's Paralympics trailer, Public Enemy's 2007 track Harder Than You Think has belatedly exploded. Never in the Top 200 before, the track gained a toehold on the Top 75 last week, debuting at number 71. It now leaps to number 27, on sales of 11,697 copies. It is the hip-hop veterans' 18th Top 75 entry and their 10th Top 40 hit, arriving 15 years after their ninth, He Got Game.

Elsewhere in the Top 40, there are debuts this week for French DJs/producers Cedric Gervais, who enters at number 26 (11,724 sales) with his debut hit Molly, and Madeon who scores hit number two with Finale (number35, 8,001 sales). South London MC Clement Marfo and his band The Frontline's debut hit Champion arrives at number 38 (7,410 sales).

Meanwhile, new to the Top 75 but falling short of the Top 40 are two songs featured in the London Olympic Games opening ceremony, and subsequently released on the Isles Of Wonder compilation little more than a day before the end of the chart survey period, these being The Arctic Monkeys' cover of The Beatles' Come Together (number 67, 3,598 sales), and Caliban's Dream by Underworld, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Only Men Aloud, Evelyn Roberts & Alex Trimble (number 69, 3,389 sales).

The eighth and last Top 75 debut of the week is Keane's Sovereign Light Cafe, which creeps in at number 74 (3,236 sales). Keane's 14th Top 75 entry, it is unlikely to be one of their biggest - its low debut comes despite considerable airplay, with the track ranking 19th on the radio airplay chart the week before.

Californian hip-hop crew Far East Movement and Barbadian pop trio Cover Drive both rack up their fourth Top 20 hit, as their collaboration Turn Up The Love advances 28-16 (17,626 sales).

Overall singles sales are down 4.59% week-on-week at 3,142,600 - 0.41% above same week 2011 sales of 3,129,866.

    Albums:

The Olympics are focusing attention on heroic sporting endeavours in East London, while Plan B's third album Ill Manors - which debuts at number one this week - concerns itself with the seamier side of life in the area. Featuring titles like Drug Dealer, Great Day For A Murder and Your Mother Was A Prostitute, the album is technically a soundtrack to Plan B's film of the same name, and as such is only the second soundtrack album to reach number one in the 21st century, emulating AC/DC's 2010 release Iron Man 2.

Prior to that, the last soundtrack album to top the artist album chart was James Horner's Titanic in 1998. Although the title track of Ill Manors reached number six in April, and the film was in nearly 200 cinemas across the UK, the album's opening week's sales of 36,855 copies compare unfavourably with Plan B's last album, The Defamation Of Strickland Banks, which sold 68,173 copies when debuting at number one in 2010. It has thus far sold 1,290,199 copies. Plan B's first album, Who Needs Actions When You Got Words opened and peaked a number 30 in 2006, on sales of 8,673 copies, and has now sold 124,126 copies.

New Jersey rock group The Gaslight Anthem's fourth album, Handwritten, was never a threat to Plan B's chart-topping ambitions but distanced itself from everything else on the market to debut at number two on sales of 18,380 copies. In chart terms, the band has made big leaps forward so far with every album - their 2007 debut Sink Or Swim failed to chart, 2008 follow-up The '59 Sound reached number 55, and their third - 2010's American Slang - reached number 18. But chart placings don't tell the whole story - and The '59 Sound is their most popular title, with 89,039 sales to date, compared to American Slang's 71,242 and Sink Or Swim's 10,712.

With 20 Top 20 hits to her credit spanning 13 years, a Jennifer Lopez 'best of' compilation was long overdue, hence the high (number four, 9,213 sales) debut of Dance Again...The Hits this week.

Joss Stone has known the lows and the highs of chart life, with her second album Mind, Body & Soul reaching pole position in 2004 but her fourth album Colour Me Free! - released just five years later - never making it beyond the chart's lowest rung, number 75. Her independently released 2011 album LP1 suggested her career was back on the up, reaching number 36, and that theory is borne out by the number six debut (8,414 sales) of The Soul Sessions Volume 2 this week. As its title suggests, the album is a sequel to her 2003 debut The Soul Sessions, which reached number four and is her biggest selling album, with 1,075,492 sales to date - shading Mind, Body & Soul's 940,617. Like The Soul Sessions, it was produced by Steve Greenberg and comprises entirely of covers, including Labi Siffre's I Got The..., Womack & Womack's Teardrops and two Chi-Lites hits, (For God's Sake) Give More Power To The People and Stoned Out Of My Mind. Stone reached number 13 last year as a member of supergroup SuperHeavy, whose other members include Mick Jagger and Dave Stewart.

Slipknot's Antennas To Hell debuts at number 22 (4,760 sales). The Collection debuts at number 37 for Vangelis (3,544) sales.

Hopes that the upcoming 50th anniversary of The Beatles' first release would be marked by a further excursion into their unreleased archives by EMI seem to have come to nothing. Instead, the company issued, with no advance publicity Tomorrow Never Knows - a new compilation of previously released Beatles rock tracks, exclusive to iTunes, with a price tag of £5.99. Available since last Tuesday, the album debuts at number 44 (2,917 sales) and means that, after holding out for so long against digital, The Beatles are one of the few acts to chart an album on download sales alone. The other albums so to do, and the order in which they have achieved it: Slash by Slash, I Am Not A Human Being by Lil Wayne, The No 5 Collaborations Project by Ed Sheeran, iTunes Festival London 2011 EP by Adele, Spirit Break Out by Worship Central, Soundtrack To The Struggle by Lowkey, Bangarang by Skrillex, All American by Hoodie Allen, Apocalyptic Love by Slash feat. Myles Kennedy and Channel Orange by Frank Ocean.

The eighth and last Top 75 debut comes from Passion Pit, whose second album Gossamer floats in at number 56 on sales of 2,444 copies. Their 2009 debut Manners debuted and peaked a notch higher, on first week sales of 3,120.

After debuting at number one last week, Good Morning To The Night slides to number 10 for Elton John Vs. Pnau (7,312 sales). Frank Ocean's Channel Orange (3-12, 6,692 sales) and Paul Simon's Graceland (4-15, 5,923 sales) are also down sharply - but Maroon 5's Overexposed slips only 2-3. In the current sales climate, however, it sold only 9,290 copies to achieve that placing. It is the first time in 656 chart weeks thus far in the 21st century that a number three album has sold fewer than 10,000 copies. A week ago, Overexposed set a new century low for second place, selling 10,758 copies to replace Frank Ocean's Channel Orange, which had lowered the bar to 13,173 the previous week. Overexposed's new low for third place also replaces a low set by Frank Ocean's album a week earlier, when its tally of 10,538 sales usurped Lana Del Rey's Born To Die, which was number three 12 weeks earlier on sales of 12,523.

Number three is the highest of 23 positions in this week's Top 75 artist album chart to plumb a new 21st century low - so do positions 4-7, 9-10, 12-14, 16-18, 20-25, 27, 72, 74 and 75. Nicki Minaj's debut album Pink Friday is a re-entry at number 75 on the current chart but its sales of 1,497 copies represent a new low, replacing Beyonce's 4, which re-entered in the same position on sales of 1,535 copies 11 weeks earlier. As a member of Destiny's Child, Beyonce also holds the record for most sales for a number 75 album in a week this century - No. 1's sold 16,857 in week 51, 2005 while easing 72-75. That figure, incidentally, is more than number one sales recorded by Emeli Sande, Newton Faulkner and Elton John in the last three months.

While Plan B's soundtrack album tops the chart, another makes big upwards progress. German composer Hans Zimmer's Batman score The Dark Knight Rises jumps 36-19 (5,032 sales).

Featuring fully half of the current Top 20 singles, and including 12 number one hits among its 44 tracks, Now! 82 dominates the album market this week, debuting atop the compilation chart on sales of 267,618. It heads up an historic all 'Now' top three which also includes Now That's What I Call A No.1 (1-2, 22,016 sales) and Now That's What I Call Reggae (2-3, 20,998 sales). Topping the 255,337 copies that the last regular Now! album - Now! 81 - sold when debuting at number one 16 weeks ago to achieve the highest weekly sale of any album - artist or compilation - in any week so far in 2012. Now! 82's first week sales are, however, 8.70% below the 294,219 copies 2011 equivalent Now! 79 sold on its debut exactly a year ago. Now! 82 accounted for slightly more than a sixth of ALL album sales last week, and 41.82% of the compilation sector, in which it sold more than 12 times more than any other album, and more than the rest of the Top 200 combined. It also sold more than the top 42 artist albums combined.

Although no threat to Now!, Isles Of Wonder - a collection of music from the Olympic Games opening ceremony - sold 10,498 copies in a little over 24 hours to debut at number five.

Overall album sales are up 11.26% week-on-week at 1,604,442 - 11.58% below same week 2011 sales of 1,814,587.

Nice to get sales for the whole top 10 singles for a change.

@ the album sales though, I knew they had to be even lower than the last few weeks for J Lo to be that high.

    JESUS at those album sales.

Considering the sales of Plan B's last album that is beyond awful. He should have been looking at a six figure opening.
