I haven't mentioned it on Facebook either, but it's not something I usually do anyway. This time I am especially finding it hard to put words to how I am feeling.

The packed streets of Soho singing Bridge Over Troubled Water has really got me this evening. I put a post on Facebook about my perceived silence outside the gay community and have had a range of comments from people completely refuting it and others assuring me we're all side by side. Since posting I have seen a massive increase in people sharing links to stories, changing their profile picture and a friend of my mums sent me a link to a statement from the Church.

    The Archbishop of Cantebury:

"In the wake of the appalling attack in Orlando, I’ve released this joint statement with the Archbishop of York John Sentamu:

"After Sunday’s attack in Orlando, as Christians we must speak out in support of LGBTI people, who have become the latest group to be so brutally targeted by the forces of evil. We must pray, weep with those affected, support the bereaved, and love without qualification.

The obligation to object to these acts of persecution, and to support those LGBTI people who are wickedly and cruelly killed and wounded, bereaved and traumatised, whether in Orlando or elsewhere, is an absolute call on our Christian discipleship. It arises from the unshakeable certainty of the gracious love of God for every human being.

Now, in this time of heartbreak and grief, is a time for solidarity. May God our Father give grace and comfort to all who mourn, and divine compassion to us all."

I was tempted to do as much, but I kinda went OTT yesterday. It seems to be happening anyway as people see the news this this evening of gay people mourning. I rather suspect no one quite realised how much it hurt gay people.

My friends have all been very supportive about whats happened and a lot have changed their profile photos.

I do wonder if some people haven't been as affected because it's so far away. If it had happened at GAY in London I wonder if the outpouring would be greater

I didn't really see a big outpouring for Belgium either - are people just becoming desensitised to mass killings?

All but a few of the deceased's names have now been released. Overwhelmingly male, predominantly Latino, with ages ranging from 19 up to 50.

Brenda Lee Marquez McCool's name stood out on the list - she was there with her son who survived. She sounds like an amazing woman.

As soon as I did I wouldn't I did. It wasn't very accusatory despite being there in plain site.

The BBC have a whole feature on the gay response this evening. Maybe we were too quick to judge. It's a huge story with many elements.

I only found out just now that there was one in Glasgow earlier this evening. Wish I'd known. There is one in Edinburgh on Wednesday that I am going to try to get to.

Not sure if it's appropriate or not, maybe we could change the Moopy banner to a rainbow design or something?

I didn't really notice the silence on Facebook, it was all over mine, but I struggled with what I could say about it all and only just posted something earlier. It was more in work that it was noticeable. While a bunch of girls were talking about Kim Kardashian it took all my strength not to stand up and tell them to shut the fuck up. I've definitely felt this more than Brussels and Paris, and probably 7/7 too.

I went with The Pole to the London vigil tonight and to be honest, aside from the volume of people and the moment's silence, I thought it was a bit flaccid and it dispersed a bit too quickly in that Quite Fancy A Pie* Now sort of way. However, The Pole mistaking 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' for 'The Lord Is My Shepherd' caused some amusement

The Soho vigil was remarkable. Absolutely packed from every entrance and total silence for two minutes (apart from a couple of miserable straights bitching that they couldn't get to Aladdin :daf:)

Were you there? I think the silence could have gone on for longer. That was the most striking part of it and those poor people deserve as much time as possible in everyone's thoughts

This is just so heartbreaking. These beautiful boys were partners and both were killed. Their families are giving them a joint funeral in place of the wedding that both families anticipated. :( The guy on the right is the son of the lady interviewed in the clip that was shared a few pages ago as she waited for news of her son.

The press are now saying that the shooter was a regular in Pulse and people have said he had a Grindr profile.

    What a surprise. :eyes:

Bad parenting, indoctrination of young children into religion. The self hatred that this guy must have been carrying around his whole life...

I've only seen the metro so far today with the full page Old Compton St photo cover. What are the other papers (okay, so specifically the Mail) going with for cover stories?

His father gave a nice little speech saying that it was for God to judge us, not his son. Both can fuck off.

It's a shame that my enjoyment of Muslim dom tops (due to not being able to accept being bottoms) has to be ruined by massacres for the same reason.

Would it make a difference to the nature of the hate crime if he's a repressed closeted gay/bi* rather than just a good old fashioned full blown homophobe?

*Apparently when he worked as a security guard on a residential complex he was fucking a load of female residents, despite his religious beliefs and despite being married with a kid.

No, it makes no difference. Killing gays because you hate what they represent is a homophobic hate crime (even if your homophobia is internalised).

Recent GLAAD Ally Award winner Mariah Carey has kept her thoughts to herself thus far as well. Not ideal.
