Pretty much on schedule. Although I suspect the story may have been held back a few weeks to tie in with Eurovision. If it's now 15,000 ahead as the article states, it must have overtaken a month or two ago, considering it only re-entered the top 100 this week, so current sales aren't that high. According to the BPI website it's 'only' 13x platinum, having last been certified in 2005. They really ought to update it.

Björn thinks Sgt Pepper's... is the greatest album of all time then? Not that surprising, I guess. Benny probably prefers the album that inspired it - Pet Sounds, being the Beach Boys loon he is.

I've found someone who I believe to be Hermes666 on an Abba forum abba4ever (although dropping the Olympian God name theme there) posting this, which indicates what I thought; namely that 'Gold' did overtake 'Sgt Pepper' a whie back, but also rather interestingly also refers to the murky business of the Queen GH sales.

That's really very good. There have been several editions but unlike Sgt. Pepper was released in the CD era so never benefitted from people upgrading formats. Maybe a few cassette to CD exchanges though.

The Queen thing is fucking annoying and unfair. So has The Platinum Collection sold 566k in the UK and that figure gets individually added to GH 1, 2 & 3? Because the jump in sales for GH 1 came from out of nowhere after The Platinum Collection was released without the individual compilation significantly recharting.

I don't know. I would imagine the label could elect ONE of them, perhaps? Either way it's a nonsense.

Queen's Platinum Collection can't have sold 1.5m, can it? That would be the only legitimate reason for allocating 500k sales to Greatest Hits (which is one third of the collection).

Truly phenomenal stats. While 88k won't see it chasing Queen fast, that's still very competitive in today's sales climate. I wonder how much it streams. They're quite strong on Spotify, all their top 10 songs has over 10 million and DQ is on 75 million.

They actually fell 6k further behind Queen last year, I believe.

So far this year, Abba have been above Queen in the album chart both weeks.

Of course Adele has closed the gap now, but I don't think she represents a real threat in the long term.

Abba Gold (#77 for 2017 with 91k sales) fell a further 9.5k behind Queen's Greatest Hits (#68, 100.5k) last year.

Adele's 21 wasn't in the Top 100 albums for the year.

And that's the highest yearly total for Gold since 2011.

Unless it utterly tanks, Mamma Mia 2 might give it a bit of a boost for 2018?

I'm sure it will get something of a boost from it. I did wonder if Universal would bother with some sort of new compilation, but I don't imagine they will go to that effort. There will be the soundtrack obviously, and then at best I imagine they will repromote the 3CD version (or one of the old 2CD ones) of Gold with More Gold. I don't THINK any of the tracks I've heard mentioned for MM2 aren't on either.

What *is* on Mamma Mia 2?

In the trailer I noticed Mamma Mia (again) and we know Cher's doing Fernando. What else?

To be honest I can't remember, although I think I noted them down in the film thread, up to what was known at that point.

I seem to recall KMKY is on it again as well, together with Angeleyes and I've Been Waiting For You.

Can Gold get away with some nonsense like Queen did about including the Gold disc in with some larger set, like Queen’s first GH?

It has been included in with a larger set. Possibly more than once (certainly more than once internationally - I forget what has been released where). It just didn't sell much.

ABBA also have the fact that all their members are still alive in the bank for when a final push is needed to catch Queen, who’ve already cashed that one in.

Ah but Queen are making a biopic. Mucho publicito.

And compilations should still be excluded.

This isn't ABBA's to win really. But it's nice that it's Queen v ABBA and the Beatles aren't involved.

Is fucking Sheeran especially high with any album?

I actually own neither Abba Gold nor Queen's Greatest Hits.

I wonder what percentage of the population this puts me in?

Gold up to #19 in the midweeks.

I read on ukmix that it's the #2 album on iTunes in Europe, and #3 worldwide.

I wonder how ABBA benefit from streaming compared to Queen?

My initial thought is that certain Queen tracks probably generate much higher individual figures but ABBA’s catalogue as a whole might average more?

ABBA have more floorfillers which is Playlist-friendly. Queen only really hit the dancefloor with Another One Bites The Dust.

According to Kworb's all-time Spotify artists

"Based on all daily and weekly top 200 data as provided by Spotify.
Therefore totals will be lower than an artist/song's actual streams."

    #1 Drake - 10,487,305,118 streams
    #644 Queen - 87,709,931 streams
    #3164 ABBA - 4,335,803 streams

That figures, in as much as I've noticed that Abba are often above Queen on album pure sales, but below them on the overall chart.

It's funny but I'd have thought that the song-by-song era would have been very good to the Beatles given that many of their best known songs were never singles but I think they've finally hit a generation who find their inate optimism cloying, privileged and even a bit tone deaf.

You certainly get the impression that Abba's music is being passed down the generations in a way that The Beatles aren't.
